COLNE cyclist Steven Burke said it was a ‘proud moment’ as he received his MBE yesterday.

The 25-year-old was given the honour by Prince Charles in the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace.

Burke was named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for services to cycling.

He was part of the four-man team pursuit squad that Olympic gold and broke two worlds records at London 2012.

Burke said: “It’s a very proud day for me and my family, I was really happy to receive the award.

“I spoke to Prince Charles during the ceremony and he seemed to know his cycling, he was asking about last year and he knew what I’d done at the Olympics.”

Recipients of honours are allowed to take three guests to the ceremony and Burke was accompanied by his mum, dad and girlfriend.

“Mo Farah was getting his CBE as well,” said Burke. “I had a good chat with him, it was great to see other Olympians there.”

Today is another big day for Burke who will be following in Farah’s footsteps and watching Wimbledon from the Royal Box on Centre Court.

“It was brilliant to get invited to Wimbledon,” said Burke.

“I’m going along with my girlfriend, it should be a great day.

“I watch Wimbledon every year, especially from the quarter-finals onwards, so I’m looking forward to being there in person.”
