Blackburn Northern in clear over Baxenden walk-off

NO further action will be taken against Ribblesdale League side Blackburn Northern following their refusal to continue their game at champions Baxenden last month.

Northern walked off the Back Lane pitch during the game on August 15 with cricket manager Rudra Singh claiming the wet conditions were unfit for further play.

Baxenden had reached 24-0 in two overs while chasing reduced target of 134 in 25 overs when Northern’s players left the field, amid outrage and disbelief from Baxenden.

The Ribblesdale League committee met and decided that no action would be taken.

League chairman Brian Woodhead explained: “We listened to both captains and both umpires and the management committee studied various reports and decided that no further action was necessary.

“And we will look to putting something into the rules for 2010 to cover such situations.”

What an absolute disgrace, the league is in danger of becoming a laughing stock.

Last year Cherry Tree got expelled from the 20/20 for bad language from the guy on the PA whilst this year Northern get away with this.

As for changing the rules next year, why is this necessary? Basically a captain has refused to play in protest at an umpires decision, surely this should be punished under the existing code of conduct and disciplinary procedure.

How on earth can this happen? Brian Woodhead and the others who have agreed to this should hang their heads in shame.
There is no way that Northern should be allowed to get off scot free.
Personally, I feel they should be kicked out of the league, and at the very least, their captain and 'manager' should be banned for a minimum of 5 years.
Changing rules for next season is a real cop out. What a shambles!

What a complete joke. Sorry but the league committee have showed a spineless attitude to this issue, vote of no confidence anyone? and what is worse we all knew that this would happen.
I'll tell you what if this is the way the league backs up the opinions of its umpires lets refuse to accept any LBW decision because the league are obviously saying they can't make the correct decisions.
It seems like the old saying of its not what you know but who you know rings true yet again.
Total and utter farce. i know i am near the bottom of the pile when it comes to playing ability in this league but if this is the way the league is going to be run i don't think i'll bother

This is very worrying. A precedent has now been set. I hope such a situation never arises again, but now we have seen it go unpunished, what is going to stop this happening in the future?
I agree with Pinch Hitter that this is not an issue of rule changes, it should have been a disciplinary matter.
The integrity of the umpires was undermined, and the league has refused to back them up.
This whole episode shows the Ribblesdale League in a very poor light.

Wish i could have got away with that and be told we will stop it happening again at agm but you wont recieve an 18 game ban,i accepted my punishment and served my time and know it was different but then people physically hit people and get 4 games and now this just shows how spineless some people are ,what rules exactly will be put in place no team is allowed to go on the field until the ground is completely dry ?? we wouldnt get half way through the fixtures ,what about the fact also that at 1.20 pm only 2 players had turned up ,get them in midweek league and bring a club in like salesbury who at least would make a go of it

i agree with you parky the re-election vote should be used properly and get rid of them. Perhaps relegation could be the kick needed to get them thinking about cricket seriously again. They must all be sat there wetting themselves that they have got away with this. would be interested to see if any Northern fans or players comment on this site saying what they think on the issue i personally would be ashamed

It is quite clear that as far as disciplinary matters are concerned there is one rule for BN and another rule for everyone else
All clubs should stick together and refuse to sanction any change in the rules as existing code of conduct is sufficient
There should also be action taken against the League for failing to apply its own rules
Also why was the person responsible for the walk-off allowed to be present at the meeting which decided whether any action should be taken against him?

I feel sorry for Arthur Shaw , he has put a lifetime into BBN and the league . Now it has come to this .
The guy is a legend and in no way does he deserve to see his club going through this .

i admit arthur does not deserve this but this should not have got this far not only did we have the player who was playing tagged after doing unspeakable things we get this,i agree a relegation/promotion status needs to be implemented or at least the clubs being re -elected should have to re-apply properly rather than knowing they are going to be safe anyway

Another own goal scored by the Ribblesdale League, letting a club get away scot free after walking off the pitch in an important match. The same club they let off scot free for knowingly playing a suspected rapist.
It seems as though Blackburn Northern are adept at getting "special" treatment from the Ribblesdale League, one has to ask Why? Especially given the contempt they hold for the League and the rules within it. It would be interesting to see how many times a representative of Northern has appeared at the League Management committee, or how many other club representatives were star struck at the last meeting when Northern's rep appeared in all his Lancashire Regalia?
But the 2 major issues here are; 1. The precedent it sets, any team who feels they cannot win can just walk off at any time and face no punishment. The Umpires are, and should remain, the sole Arbitaors of the game as soon as play is under way. I would imagine the 2 umpires who stood in this match must feel totally let down by the League, which begs the question How do they expect to attract umpires to the league.
The 2nd and more important immediate issue is the hold a club can have over the League. There are many opinions on how this can be so and as long as they keep getting away with serious misdemenours any one could have credence. Sort your acts out and let the punishment fit the crime. Let's see how easy they get re-elected.

come on boys think about it.

woodhead and rudra are pals both arse licking their way up the ladder, dont want any upset for them boys within rank do we.
Simple answer ALL clubs who want shut get your reps to show some face and vote them out.

they keep getting away with something serious year after year and no action.
pound to a penny if certain others had walked of and conceded action would have taken.

duel standards and woodhead will have been the one to call the shots as he seems to do on all matters.

the league is a laughing stock through no fault of the member clubs over this one.

use your votes wisely clubs.
its no good protecting Arthur, stalwart that he is the club is riddled with badness

Angry, disappointed but certainly not surprised that the Ribblesdale League Management Committee and its hierachy have yet again allowed the misdemeanours of Blackburn Northern Cricket Club to go unpunished.
I am sure that everyone is wondering what hold the club have over the league for double standards to be applied everytime they transgress the rules.
Is it purely sympathy for the much-loved Arthur, fear of the "wrath of Ronnie" or fear of accusations of racism?
To my knowledge over recent years BNCC have transgressed and stretched the limit of the laws of the game, not to mention the law of the land, and rules of the league ,aswell as the spirit of our beautiful game in the following ways :1) Appointment of professional who at the time was banned from International cricket having been found guilty of being involved in match fixing.2)Engaging a professional who fled the country amidst accusations that a female scorer was sexually abused at BNCC in the scorebox where said pro was present.3)Playing a player for a full season knowing him to be electronically tagged, having been charged and subsequently convicted of serious sexual offences against a female under the age of 16.4)Having a professional ushered from the field of play in a semi-final by his employer, having questioned the umpires decision and thrown his bat on 2 occasions about 20 yards towards the pavilion(sorry Naeem).5)Leaving the field of play and refusing to play when the umpires who are the sole arbitors on such matters stated the ground was fit for play.
I am sure there is more
What was the action of the league on all occasions?Youve guessed it NOTHING.
I dont think as a bitter and twisted Cherry Tree member and ex-player of many years that I need to go over old ground and this is not a vendetta against Blackburn Northern.
Sticking to the latest incident they have clearly breached league rules, the laws of cricket and the spirit of the game.Aswell as bringing the league itself into disrepute. As such they should clearly be punished, whatever that punishment is deemed to be, and people will have their own opinions on that.
For the league management to take no action makes a laughing stock of the league itself and shows no respect whatsoever for the two experienced and respected umpires involved, aswell as setting very dangerous precedents for the years to come.As previously stated by others no new rules are required the current ones are sufficient and plain to see in black and white.
Maybe the management committee are awaiting the reelection vote to flex their muscles, but I very much doubt it.
Maybe a more suitable alternative would be for all opposition captains to take a leaf out of RP Singhs book next season and not take the field of play at Pleckgate deeming it unfit for cricket.Although this would hand a large number of points to Northern it still would not be enough for them to win the league, and obviously due to the precedent set the league could take no action.
Also it would give the players and their families a day off at a much more pleasant location than Pleckgate Road
Yours for now

The re-election vote needs to be used properly this year i for one will be requesting that our club rep votes against their re-election and i know a few others at our club will be requesting he does the same.

Rule (10) why have a rule stating expulsion then not apply it, strange carry on to me. I realy do believe that a complete revamp of the league management committee is essential. Let's formulate a strong committee that will carry out the appropriate punishment to constant rule breakers.

My issue is not with Blackburn Northern but with the League Management Committee who should have thrown the book at the individual responsible and created a deterrent for the future.

A likely scenario is now developing where the clubs could form a Lynch Mob gunning for Blackburn Northern whilst the real culprit goes unpunished.

The problem with voting Northern out of the league is that the whole of the people associated with the club suffer, the vast majority of whom are completely innocent. Which division Blackburn Northern are in next season won’t matter one little bit to Mr Signh who not doubt will be plying his trade elsewhere by then.
