Rain no pain to Baxenden

ALL of Saturday’s Ribblesdale League games were abandoned – but that didn’t stop champions Baxenden celebrating.

Ian Austin’s men received the championship trophy from league president Arthur Shaw ahead of their scheduled game with Padiham and the champagne corks could pop early as the Back Lane ground was ruled unfit for action.

It was the same at all of the venues with the derby between Clitheroe ad Whalley the first casualty.

The rain also meant that the battle for second place will go into the final match.

Read, in third, were due to host second-placed Great Harwood at Whalley Road.

The abandonment means Harwood, last year’s champions, will take an eight-point lead into their final game against rock-bottom Blackburn Northern, while Jon Harvey’s Read must win at Ribblesale Wanderers and then hope for the best if they are to finish as runners-up.
