Saturday Cricket: Lowerhouse set to beat the floods

REIGNING champions Lowerhouse are confident that their Foster's Lancashire League game with Todmorden will go ahead as planned this afternoon after a mammoth mopping-up effort.

Lowerhouse's Liverpool Road ground was largely under water last night but volunteers started working at 5.30 this morning to clear the floods.

And they are hoping their efforts will pay off and that the game will go ahead.

However, the programme has been hit and the game between Ramsbottom and Church was the first of today's Senior League matches to be called off after Acre Bottom flooded.

The ground sits next to the River Irwell - and the river broke its banks on Friday night and left Acre Bottom under water.

The match between East Lancashire and Burnley is also off with large areas of Alexandra Meadows under water.

Nelson and Haslingden hope to start at 1.45pm, while Bacup v Rishton, Colne v Accrington and Rawtenstall v Enfield could also beat the weather.

In the Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale League there are high hopes for the Padiham v Clitheroe game despite The Arbories being under water last night and Read's big game with Baxenden could also go ahead after a major mopping-up operation.

Cherry Tree's game with Salesbury will go ahead as planned at 1.30pm, while volunteers have worked hard on grounds at Whalley, Edenfield, Settle and Ribblesdale Wanderers to give games a chance.

The Northern League game between Fleetwood and Morecambe has been called off, while Chorley's match with Preston will go ahead and Darwen's trip to Netherfield will also be rewarded with cricket.
