Northern League Saturday round-up

CHRIS Wade was the hero as Darwen were involved in a remarkable Northern League clash at Preston on Saturday as he bowled the Towers to a tie.

And the bowler will take to the field in today’s local derby with Chorley at Birch Hall looking to claim the amazing feat of four wickets in four balls after after mopping up the Preston tail with a hat-trick during a breathless finish at West Cliffe.

Darwen’s 187 all out didn’t seem enough as the home side chased down the target with Mohsin Modi a real danger as he made 62.

But he was one of Wade’s magnificent seven victims on a day to remember.

He had earlier claimed the prized scalp of Preston professional and danger man Lukman Vahaluwala for just nine – but Wade’s best efforts were saved for the end as he ripped out of the tail and after taking a wicket with the last ball of the 47th over he then won the match.

The scores were tied when he began the over but he bowled Javaid Hussain and then castled the stumps of last man Andrew Starkie to earn the Towers 11 points that seemed unlikely.

Pro Shaun De Kock had made 62 but there was little support for him as wickets fell and Darwen’s 187 appeared to be below par, But the brilliant Wade had different ideas as he finished with figures of 7-45 from 18.2 overs.

But while Darwen had plenty to cheer, Chorley go into today’s derby on the back of a heavy defeat at the hands of Leyland.

Iain Critchley top scored with 20 as Chorley were all out for just 87 at Windsor Park with Brett Pelser claiming five wickets.

And then Adam Coates his 38 not out as Leyland dashed home.

Wicket are pitched for today’s game at Birch Hall starts at 1pm.
