STAR all-rounder Jonathan Finch says he is relishing the new season after being appointed as coach to the Lancashire women’s cricket team.

The 28-year-old, who won the Lancashire League title with Lowerhouse last season, has landed the Red Rose job and he will also continue to work with the England Women’s Academy as well as play for the House.

“Having been involved in the boys’ performance programmes for the last nine years it’s really a natural progression with my work,” said the Burnley-born former Nelson CC man. “But it’s an opportunity I’m really looking forward to and I can’t wait for the summer to come around.

“I am looking forward to working with players and coaches throughout the women and girls’ pathway programme to help develop players ready to perform at senior level.”

Finch says he may have to miss two or three Lowerhouse games as the Burnley outfit aims to retain the Lancashire League title but is already prepared for disruption to life with the Red Rose.

“I suppose it’s typical that I am away with the England Academy in April and miss the start for Lancs,” he said. “But that’s part of the job.”

Lancashire Women, who are captained by Rishton’s Jennifer Laycock, will face some new opponents this year due to the re-structure by the ECB and Red Rose performance director Stephen Titchard is full of praise for Finch.

“We are very fortunate to have secured his services. He will bring a different dimension.”

Captain Laycock added: “This is an exciting appointment and I am sure we’ll take this chance to improve.”
