Ribblesdale League title race to go to the wire

THE most enthralling Ribblesdale League season in years draws to a close tomorrow with the destination of the silverware going right down to the wire.

Leaders Clitheroe are in the box seat as they are 10 points clear of Read and will be champions if they beat bottom club Salesbury at Chatburn Road.

But if Clitheroe slip up, Read can take advantage if they win their home game with Great Harwood.

Skipper Peter Dibb says there will be no premature celebrations. He said: “We are at home to the bottom club so on paper that is not a bad way to finish.

“But as we have seen so often this season anyone can beat anyone – and we are not counting our chickens.

“We know what we have to do and hopefully we will finish the job off.

“And if we do it will be some transformation from last season when we finished second from bottom.

“But we know the job isn’t done yet – and if we slip up that will let Read in.”

Clitheroe will have the services of Colne pro Anwar Ali to call on for the game as he fills in once again for Tom Hardman but Chris Holt’s Read have been impressive this season and the skipper has led from the front with more than 700 runs and 53 wickets.

They are at full strength for their final fling with Great Harwood.

Elsewhere, Barnoldswick need to win at Edenfield to secure a Lancashire Cup spot.

Cherry Tree can also finish in the top five if they see off the challenge of Ribblesdale Wanderers at Preston Old Road.

SATURDAY FIXTURES

Cherry Tree v Ribblesdale Wanderers, Clitheroe v Salesbury, Earby v Oswaldtwistle Immanuel, Edenfield v Barnoldswick, Read v Great Harwood, Settle v Padiham, Whalley v Baxenden.

What ever happen's this weekend it's been an interesting season. if Clitheroe do manage to hand on and clinch the title do they deserve it ?

Course Clitheroe deserve. Look at league table!!! What a stupid question

Where were Clitheroe when Tom broke down with his back injury Pinch???
Top of the league!!!
To still be top when we've had sub-pro's, some of whom have had shockers, is a fantastic effort.
If Anwar Ali had played every game you might have a point - but he hasnt - perhaps you would be better spending your time wondering how the wheels came off at Back lane??
What about an insiders view on that?

Come on then Dude, let the cat out of the bag - everyone at Clitheroe is just as keen to know who the famous Sultan is!!!!
Si Coulter denies its him, as does Dibby and the two young spinners.(and I know it aint me!)
Give us a clue!!!!!!!

which club are you from then, or should I ask which glass house are you throwing stones at Clitheroe from??

I know you'll tell me the truth Blob but I did a bit of digging on previous threads and I am sticking my neck out and saying it's.... You. You and the sultan are the only consistent commentataors from Clitheroe and you don't seem to post at any time near each other.. And you have predictably been the first to bite to my previous comment.. Like I said only a theory.... You seemed to have denied it and if you do again like I said I will drop it and move on..

I try to give a balanced view and defend my club when i feel I need to - I dont come on to wind other folk up.
Perhaps the sultan will "out" himself on saturday - I'm finally retiring so the least he could do is have a quiet word and let me in on it - I promise I wont reveal anything............

Clithoroe will win it tomorrow and walk away with the title. Salesbury wont make 80.
Must be a horrible site for the almighty Baxendan to be nowhere near the top of the league going into the last game. Barnoldswick's efforts to buy the league has completely failed and with a 90wicket pro. Cherry Tree's team of kids has simply not been good enough or a challenge. Earby have shown that without Herbie they rely too much on one bowler and one batter. And Read will have to get their runners up cup again. Dry your eyes Chris Holt.

Very interesting analysis Sultan.
Am sure each club will have their own views and not sum it up as 'clinically' as you have.
I've got an idea for you though Sultan. I suggest you come and show us the trophy when/if you are successful on Saturday and then parade it to Cherry Tree, Read, Baxenden, Barnoldswick and Earby and see if you get out of the first clubhouse!!! You will be very lucky if you get to Barnoldswick though as I'm sure Rish, Pinch, Oscar and Paynie wont let you out of the door in one piece!!

Baxenden should have walked the league again this year. They had a poor July and it cost them. I have watched Clitheroe on a number of occasions and there bottoms seem to go when the prssure was really on. Mr Dibb lost it for a few overs at Baxenden and at Ossy. I think the outcome would have been different if 'young Hardman' hadnt found this mysterious injury. All hail the saviour Mr Anwar Ali!!!

Firstly (from the other link), i can't believe i have failed to sneak in to my own father's team of the season haha.
Do clitheroe deserve it? Tricky one because similar to the Dude i am a also a great believer in whoever finishes top has been the best team over the course of a full season. If they beat Salesbury (weather permitting) like i expect them to, then yes, Clitheroe do deserve to win it. However, if you asked me who were the toughest/best team we have played this season I would probably not answer 'Clitheroe', from my own experience this season. We have played them 3 times this season and I must say that they didn't look like a Championshp winning team on any of the 3 occasions. Granted, one of the games they were without Josh and had a pretty ordinary professional....but the only game they beat us we were without both (dibbly dobbly) opening bowlers and number 4 batsman.
On the other hand when we played Read + Newby early on in the season, i felt that this was the team to beat. Added to this i remember telling holty last month (after they'd skittled us for 70!) that having Oliver could have seen a completely different outcome to the title race - not just his bowling, but his ever improving batting would have been a massive boost. It also amazes me what has happened to Bash this year because we were soundly beaten at Back Lane, and 2 weeks ago we were beaten in a close game due to one of their matchwinners stepping up to the plate when they were 89 for 5 chasing 180ish. To see that they have lost so many games suprises me a great deal.
I agree with Blob that having sub-pro's can be difficult and disruptive to a team. BUT, not when the professional is of a quality that can consistently and single handedly win a side a game. When Anwar Ali sub-pro'd for Ribb.W against us it was clear to see the main reason the result went the way it did. But, Clitheroe were top long before Anwar showed up. What he has done is help them through any possible late season wobble....which has happened in quite a few recent games with their batting.
All in all, it's been a hard fought season and one in which one of a few sides could have won the league in the last 2 months. Clitheroe have been the side that has stepped up with the decisive blows at the right times.

My team of the year:
Nutter
Walton.Craig
Boam
Findley
Holt
Armer
Bolton.Joe
Howard (Captain)
Ibid
Craddock
Marquet

Cherry Tree's team of kids beat you in the cup and once in league plus the game at Clitheroe was very close and they were without their captain and Joe Bolton who had just smashed a fantastic 106 the week before in cup game v Clitheroe

You're right about the groundsman Frank, but not sure a coach with a dodgy shoulder is going to make a trip over from blackburn to push 'em on!!

I have mentioned this earlier and I am fully agreed with Blob that there should be more paid amateur in the league and this will only raise the cricket standard in this league. In my opinion league will be more competitive. You can attract new players or give incentives to your good young players and this will bring sense of professionalism and responsibility to these players.

As respect to Read is better looking team than CCC, no way. You can count the total runs (Read 3000 runs & CCC approx 2800, not including Sub pro). I am only comparing till number 8.
On 7 & 8 positions CCC scored 485 runs, at least 4 or 5 match winning knocks and Read scored 378. I don’t think any team in this league have depth in their side.

So moral of the story is that CCC has class, quality and match winner in their side which I am sorry others don’t have.
Hope this will clear the air.

Blob says...
11:36am Sat 11 Sep 10

Everybody has, and is entitled to their opinion. Some are more balanced than others - the more balanced views tend to come from those who are willing to put their name to what they write (unlike the Sultan, got the tee shirt, etc, etc).
The reason Clitheroe have won the league this year has been our bowling attack and the number of options it has given Dibby as captain. It has meant that very rarely has a team "gotten away" from us and most sides have been put under pressure throughout their innings.
Our batting line-up has been no stronger than in previous years and as Tosh mentioned earlier, has wobbled in a big way at times. But then name me a side in the league this year that hasnt had their fair share of batting collapses?? Everyone of the top sides has been rolled cheaply at some stage.
Clitheroe's batting issues have to some extent been cured by the opening partnership of Dibb and Lebreton. Young Tim has relished the responsibility of opening and they have laid a platform for the middle and lower orders several times in the last third of the season.
Dibby has been spoilt for choice bowling-wise at times with 2 quicks, 3 medium-quick, a slow left arm and an offie. No other side could call on that kind of variety or quality.
I dont know who you are "got the tee-shirt", and I probably never will because people who spout the kind of rubbish you do rarely have the balls to reveal their identities.
We have a fantastic junior set-up which has rightly swept the board up to u15 level this year and in time will hopefully supply the first team with home-grown players. Unfortunately we cant magic these lads into grown men so we will have to wait another 2 or 3 seasons to see them start filling the seconds and first team.
As for a "bought first team" - just exactly who do you think is getting paid to play?
lets be hearing who you think gets a drop - I write all the cricket section cheques so I'm happy to tell you if you're right or wrong.

Sounds to me like your a bit bitter about our success - are you a Ribblesdale deviant by any chance??

"Got the Tee shirt" says...

They didnt complain and they said it wasnt for them to report which I find puzzling if they cant anyway. We haven't told the League anything at all so not sure who told you that we've gone running to the League. We simply mentioned my earlier point to your Rep and left it at that.

Sorry to report garns that pinch hitter still remains anonymous but i believe he doesnt reside in bash and is in fact a resident of whalley which is strange.Does indeed look like people are pretending to be from certain clubs when in fact they are not.i did walk around with a bottle of babycham trying to entice the guilty party but to no avail even quizzed onion on it but even he denied it

Congrats to Clitheroe on the league, as Rishy is right - the table doesn't lie.
Also Congrats to my young lads...+ a couple of older heads. Been a top effort finishing 5th in the Lancs Cup places and making a Cup Semi final.

Not a bad start to the post-season rumour mill Dude!

Naveed and Qadeer (sp) have retired from cricket. Nav for family reasons and Qadeer through injuries. Umar has always insisted he was staying at Padiham and seeing as he has played about 13 seasons at Padiham I would be surprised if he left.
Kash has had a very lucrative offer to go and play in Ireland as well as the Edgeworth offer so they wouldn't want to travel that far.
Eddie has also retired so there will be at least 4 or 5 new faces in the team.

Some crackers there Peth, think it might be a bit of poking around in the dark... Matt Garner to Barlick ? – Possibly – big mate of Nutts and Barlick need decent keeper.
Mark Burns to Baxenden – Can see this one, never stays anywhere too long.
Liam Bones to Baxenden – Hope not, decent bowler but too much baggage.
David Parkinson to Clitheroe – No Chance.
Paul Kelly to Edenfield – More chance of signing Henry Kelly.
John Seedle to Harwood – Would fit in well with aging team, he must be nearly 60?
Gary Sudsworth to Hassy - Only if Chris Read ends up at Edenfield.
Lewis Mckintosh to Hassy – Can’t see this one.
Jon Harvey Read captain – Already is in all but name.
Mark Rishton to Read – Can’t see this but wouldn’t rule out move away from Back Lane
Jonathon Finch to Salesbury (pro) – Last seasons news.

Others I have heard on the grapevine:-

Boothy back to Whalley – (Couldn’t settle at Settle)
Dec Fitzhenry (he really should have gone to Specsavers) – to Clitheroe

Blob, you are bound to say that no-one has made an offer to Turns. As would you deny that after we'd signed Paul for season 2010, CCC (probably dressed up as a 'keen' fan with a bit of extra cash) offered him money as an amateur (probably second coach if you want to dress it up as being acceptable).
Haha 'Tapping up'.
If 'tapping up' is a current 15 year old player of CTCC telling the 1st XI captain that his mate from school Ali Haider possibly wants to join CTCC because a. it's too far to travel, and b. he is not getting enough of a bowl; and said captain subsequently speaking to Ali......then guilty as charged. Pretty sure there's no rules being broken there.
On the other hand, CCC reportedly offering Ali Haider money to stay (whether it's 'expenses' or not!) is more of the story.
I actually don't mind the idea of clubs paying more than one player as long as it is open and everyone is aware of it. It helps to keep the standard high, and hopefully improves us all as players. But to come on here and accuse us of tapping Ali up is simply laughable, and a bit rich to be honest.
Ps. Some pretty interesting rumours. If one of the top clubs with a good spinner snap burnsy up, they have got a gem! Class keeper.

I have to agree, it's frankly hilarious that anybody from Clitheroe can throw out allegations of "tapping up".
They actively and blatantly attempt to hoover up any talent in the district.
What surprises me also, is that none of the youngsters at their fringes do not seem bothered that they only get limited involvement in senior cricket. For example take a look at their 2nd team and note how regularly the top order is made up of older players knocking back 20/30 overs, similarly for when they bowl.

Tosh - are you saying someone at my club has offered Ali money to stay??
I wouldnt mind knowing who it is seeing I am the club treasurer?? Likewise the alleged offer to Turns!! I know I've hardly played this season but I reckon I know about most things discussed at the club and I have no reason to lie on here - if someone is throwing money around, I'd quite like to know!!
Andreas - I remember speaking to Turns regarding the "coach" role last year, but at the time he certainly had not signed a contract with you lot. If memory serves me right a further call to Turns was made by someone else at a later date but by that time he had signed for you so the matter was dropped.

This is brilliant. Reading this now makes me realise what a clever little c*** I used to be on these things. How this game has a funny way of biting you on the backside. As for the alleged rumours regarding people from Whalley stirring up all this bull on here, I am unable to lay claim to the title of 'Wind Up Merchant.' And whoever suggests that I'd be moving club is very wrong. I doubt there is any club in the league (or any other league) that would have me. Enjoy the ridiculous banter.

Matt, unfortunately I have no idea who the alias names are but I am 99% sure that it is no-one at Whalley. If it is well, there clearly being a douchebag and I'm pretty certain that there isn't anyone sad enough or bored enough at WCC to do that.
