Lancashire League Saturday round-up

TODMORDEN professional Qaiser Abbas went through the magical 100-wicket mark for the season as landmarks were reached on the penultimate day of the season.

All eyes were on Centre Vale as Abbas and Ramsbottom skipper Jonathan Fielding went head to head in a left-arm spin race to the century.

Abbas was the man celebrating as he claimed 7-40 to bowl Rammy out for 130. That took Abbas on to 101 wickets for the season as he became the first Tod pro since Sylvester Oliver to take 100 in a campaign in 1966.

With Fielding in form, Ramsbottom fancied their chances - but despite the skipper claiming three wickets to move to 98 for the season, Ben Sutcliffe (44), Abbas (41 not out) and Simon Newbitt (33) eased Todmorden home.

Newbitt’s efforts saw him move to within six runs of John Turner at the top of the amateur run charts with Turner’s East Lancs rained off at Haslingden.

It was a landmark day for 17-year-old former Clitheroe spinner Ali Sartaj as the Rishton talent became the youngest player in Lancashire League history to take 50 wickets in a season.

Sartaj reeled in 4-93 as Rishton won their bottom of the table clash with Colne by five wickets.

Accrington guaranteed themselves the Holland Cup as runners-up as they brushed aside Burnley at Thorneyholme Road.

Rawtenstall were well beaten at Nelson as Richard Meade passed 50 wickets for the first time, taking 4-30.

Sub-pro Raheel Majeed picked up 4-21 also as Rawtenstall were 85 all out before Nelson dashed home.

Sad to see Nelsons young captain make a fool of himself, claiming the downfall of his team, the reason they didn't win the league was the problems with the pro!! this form a player whose figures don't justify a place in the team never mind the captaincy, whose antics and captaincy on the field has been a disgrace at times. Walking out to bat in a pressure situation with a ridiculous 20/20 bat and failing miserably, dropping the keeper to have a go with a rookie thats never kept before (surely 2nd team is there for that) and rumours are flying that Khurram Nazir has had enough and may go to Colne, Stuart Lemon is ready to pack up. Maybe Mt Lord should look closer to home than the easy excuse of not managing a regular pro!
