Lancashire League Saturday round-up: Accrington celebrate West End success

LOWERHOUSE’S 18-month unbeaten run on their own Liverpool Road patch came to a crushing end on Saturday as Accrington gained revenge for recent pains at the hands of the defending Foster’s Lancashire League champions in dramatic style.

The House seemed to be on the road to yet another win when they rolled Accrington over for just 102 as Fergus Bailey and professional Francois Haasbroek each claimed three wickets against the last team to beat them in any game in August last year.

But any hopes of a Lowerhouse win were wrecked by Accrington pro Ashar Zaidi and seamer David Ormerod, who bowled marvellously to not only strangle the runs but also took wickets as well.

The champions were soon reeling at 10-5 and by the half-way stage had limped to 25-6 before Chris Bleazard (28) tried to take his side home. But he fell, the only man in double figures, and despite Bailey facing 112 balls for his nine not out, Lowerhouse were 68 all out in the 48th over with Zaidi and Ormerod each claiming five wickets.

News of Lowerhouse’s loss spread quickly and second-placed Enfield made sure they capitalised as Werner Coetsee claimed five wickets and then hit 52 not out as the Dill Hall Laners strolled past Haslingden in style.

But Church suffered as they were beaten by a Qasier Abbas-inspired Todmorden at Centre Vale. The Pakistani claimed 7-53 as Church were all out for 155 and then he top scored with 59 as Todmorden coasted home.

Rishton had a good day as they beat Colne thanks to a fine display from professional Dan Salpietro and bowlers Ali Sartaj and Garth Wyse. The Aussie took 3-68, Wyse 3-38 and Sartaj 3-8 as Colne were 118 all out.

And then he hit 65 not out as Rishton got home by four wickets.

Jonathan Fielding claimed six wickets as Ramsbottom beat Burnley at Turf Moor despite being bowled out for just 99.

That proved ample, though, as Fielding reeled in 6-43 and Michael Haslam chipped in with three wickets as Burnley were 70 all out.

Tom Bradshaw made his highest score as he made 56 and skipper Neil Thompson also hit a half-century as Nelson won at Rawtenstall. The Seedhillites posted 193 at Bacup Road as Lancashire League legend Joe Scuderi filled in as substitute professional.

Scuderi claimed two wickets as Rawtenstall replied and there were three each for Toq Hussain and David Crotty as Rocky were all out for 125.

Ockert Erasmus hit a fine 66 as East Lancashire won a tense game with Bacup by 13 runs. The South African and David Pearson (31) rescured East Lancashire from 6-2 as Bacup were left disappointed by sub pro Hammad Azan.

The ex-Pakistan U19 man, who played two one day internationals, couldn’t decide whether to bowl seam or spin as East Lancs piled up 190-8 – and then gave his wicket away slogging.

But Tim Farrager made 31 and Joe Sipocz a smart 34 as Bacup threatened to get home as Erasmus saw his patience tested before he and David Turner both finished with four wickets as the visitors were all out for 177.
