JUBILANT David Ormerod has lavished praise on his Accrington champions after they retained their Lancashire League crown.
Ormerod’s men crept up on the rails to pip long-time leaders Haslingden in a dramatic last day, which saw twists and turns and high drama and tension.
In the end, it was Accrington on top and celebrating while Haslingden could only lick their wounds, “I am so proud of Accrington’s amateur players,” he said.
“This season our progessional Roy Silva has struggled by his own admission and it has been the amateurs who have seen us through.
“We have a tremendous bunch of amateurs. There is no stand-out star.
“Everyone has stepped up when they needed to.
“Some people wrote us off – and to be honest, Haslingden were expected to win it.
“But we just carried on with our jobs and it came together for us.
“It is a wonderful feeling.”
