WITH the chance to make Worsley Cup history and a challenge on four fronts there is plenty at stake for Burnley this season – and they are relishing it.

Sunday’s semi-final win against rivals Lowerhouse puts the Turf Moor side just one win away from becoming the first team to win the Worsley Cup three times in a row.

But rather than fear the challenge, David Brown says it is one to be embraced by the Lancashire League leaders.

And with a 20/20 semi-final with Enfield to look forward to on Friday night, as well as their LCB Knockout Cup quarter final with Clitheroe on July 26, they are not taking their eye off the ball in any game they play.

“We said at the start of the year we wanted to compete in every competition we play in,” he said.

“The lads were delighted to get to the final.

“Lowerhouse have been the stand-out team for me over the last four or five years, which has set the bar for everyone else, especially at home.

“They get a fairly hostile crowd and a lot of people watching.

“It’s never easy but we’ve got some quality in our team, especially this season, which meant that if we played well we were going to be difficult to beat.

“If we can win three Worsley Cups on the trot it would be a brilliant achievement.

“But to take a Sean Dyche saying we are taking it one game at a time,” added Clarets fan Brown.

“We want to win the next game in front of us.

“To still be competing on all four fronts in mid-July – if we didn’t come away with anything we would be really disappointed. But if we keep performing as we have been and doing the basics well, which is what we have done for the last few weeks, we’re going to have a chance of winning something.”

But Brown, who was instrumental in Burnley’s progress to the Worsley Cup final thanks to his unbeaten 91, is not taking anything for granted.

“Ramsbottom are close to us in the league – there are only eight points in it now,” he said.

“They beat us the other week and were the better side on the day.

“But it’s good because it would be easier to take your foot off the gas if you had a 30-40 point lead.

“We can’t afford to do that.

“We’ve got to play Enfield yet and they aren’t far off.

“Things can soon turn around in a couple of weeks.

“But I’m not worried about the lads, they are turning up every week really motivated to do well.

“If we can keep going as we have been, we’ve got a chance.”

Of his personal performance, Brown added: “It’s always nice to get a few, especially coming off the back of a couple of ducks the weekend before.

“I got a few on Saturday (in the win at Rawtenstall) which set me up nicely, and once I got in it was just a matter of trying to be ruthless and stick to the basics.”
