Accy end Nelson’s dreams of cup glory

ACCRINGTON marched into the last four of the Foster’s Worsley Cup yesterday as Nelson’s dreams of glory were dashed as they were well beaten at Seedhill.

Aijaz Shah made 55, Stuart Crabtree 35 and pro Ashar Zaidi 23 as Accrington made 182-6.

Nelson’s batsmen never really got into the swing with wickets falling regularly as Mitch Taylor claimed 4-19.

Number nine batsman Tom Bradshaw top scored for Nelson with 25.

Joe Martin made a glorious 72 as Lowerhouse kept up their pursuit of a double as they beat Bacup at Liverpool Road.

Jonathan Finch also contributed 47 and Chris Bleazard made 32 as the House posted a testing 221-6.

Bacup, with their former amateur ace and current Edenfield professional Paul Gallagher as sub-pro, needed a good start but lost Jack McGregor to the fourth ball of the reply.

And when Gallagher and Tim Farragher perished before Bacup had reached 50 it was an uphill struggle.

Church pro Saeed Anwar made an unbeaten 83 as his side beat Haslingden.

The game was interrupted by showers in the early stages but Anwar batted beautifully and slammed 30 from the final three overs to push his men up to 196-8.

And when skipper and key batsman Graham Knowles went with the score on 16 it was anything but the start Haslingden wanted and eventually they fell 27 runs short.

The tie between East Lancashire and Enfield was called off without a ball being bowled due to a waterlogged Alexandra Meadows.

It will now be played on Saturday.

The winners will host Lowerhouse in the semi-final with Accrington hosting Church in a Hyndburn derby in the other tie.
