Worsley Cup final: Charlie cheered by his House kids

CAPTAIN Charlie Cottam says he is relishing today’s Worsley Cup final showdown at Church - and admits he has no fear about throwing his Lowerhouse young guns into the front line of the biggest competition.

The reigning Lancashire League champions have built a side around their talented youngsters plus a few older heads in the shape of Cottam, Chris Bleazard, Joe Beneduce and Jonathan Finch.

That tried and tested script has paid dividend with the House storming to last year’s title and now booking a spot in this year’s Worsley Cup final, eight years on from the cup win that kick started their change in fortunes.

“Initially I was a little wary about having the young lads batting or bowling in tandem,” said Cottam. “We tried to pair them up with one of the older guys but they have proved themselves and I have no fears about them being out there and doing a job.

“It is the reward for a lot of hard work down the years from the likes of Stan Heaton and a lot of people at the club can feel very proud of what has been achieved.”

Cottam, right, is determined to put the historic Worsley Cup in the Liverpool Road locker and admitted this final means a little more than 2004.

“We brought a few lads in to kick start the club back then,” he said. “But now it is all local lads in the side and I think tomorrow’s game probably means that little bit more because of that.

“I am really excited by the game - and everyone around the club feels the same.”

The House had a worry over professional Francois Haasbroek and the South African missed last Sunday’s league meeting with Church.

He is fit for tomorrow and Cottam added: “Frankie has had a treatment this week and is fine, that’s good news because he is a big player for us.”
