LANCASHIRE will monitor the fitness of wicketkeeper Alex Davies ahead of Friday's County Championship home clash with Somerset.

The Darwen ace was unable to keep wicket in the second innings of last week's draw with Surrey having picked up a thumb injury while batting in Lancashire's second innings.

Dane Villas kept in Davies' absence and Red Rose Head Coach Glen Chapple said after the Old Trafford match that the 23-year-old would be assessed.

"He took a nasty blow on the thumb and stayed off as a precaution but he would have struggled to keep wicket. It hasn’t got worse which is a good sign," said Chapple.

The Lancashire chief was pleased with his side's performance against Surrey as they came close to pulling off a victory which looked unlikely when the home side were 21-3 in their first innings.

But, with the first day washed out, Lancashire responded and made 439-9 declared before bowling the visitors for 235 to enforce the follow on.

But Surrey resisted to close on 199-6 and leave the Red Rose with 12 points from the match.

Chapple said: “The effort from the lads was superb throughout, we controlled virtually every session of the match.

"There were some top class performances, great partnerships and some real resilience and effort over the three days.

"It would have been an unbelievable effort to win in three days on that pitch. If it had gone the four days I think we would have come out on top.

“I think we’ve shown the type of team we are. Everyone’s disappointed in the results from the first two games but they were both affected by weather and different type of game.

"The performance here is what we are all about. We can take a lot of confidence from it and move on.

“What pleases a coach the most is the purpose they’ve shown and the fight to win the game. And how well they’ve played as a unit. Skill levels were high in both departments.”
