BURNLEY are a team chasing history but skipper Bharat Tripathi insists his side won’t be put off by the pressure of being heavy favourites heading into tomorrow’s Worsley Cup final against Nelson.

The Turf Moor men are chasing a quadruple of the league title and Worsley Cup to add to the Moorhouse’s Twenty20 and Ron Singleton Trophies they already hold.

Tomorrow’s final also gives Burnley the chance to become the first side to win three successive Worsley Cups.

And with plenty of East Lancashire cricket folk talking of Burnley as an all-star side such is the depth of talent they can call on, surely the talk must get to the players?

“A lot of people have been calling us an all-star team and I think people do try and say it to get under our skin but all I would say is that cricket goes around in cycles. We are having a good run at the moment but we might drop off again and then a few years later come good again.

“I do think it is a massive compliment, I don’t know if it is always intended to be one but I think you have to take it that way.

“At the moment we have a very good squad of players. We have had a couple of star performers with the bat, but with the ball everyone has really chipped in.”

It is not difficult to see why other clubs look on with a degree of envy at the Burnley line up.

In Jonathan Clare, David Brown and Michael Brown they have three players who have performed regularly at county level, while opener Vishal Tripathi has also played at that level and Bharat himself has made several appearances for the Unicorns. Unsurprisingly, all are available for tomorrow’s showpiece.

Despite the talent at his disposal, the Burnley skipper insists his side know the significance of a third straight cup win.

“In my opinion it is the one of the best competitions in club cricket. It means so much to the players and it means a lot to the league,” he said.

“Whoever hosts it gets to put on a real show and it would mean a lot to us to win it again on Sunday.”
