BURNLEY professional Chris Holt believes Sunday’s LCB Knockout defeat to Clitheroe will only strengthen his side’s desire to claim the Lancashire League and Worsley Cup trophies later this summer.

The Turf Moor men were beaten by six wickets at Ribblesdale League leaders Clitheroe on Sunday afternoon after the rain relented long enough to allow a twenty over contest to take place.

But, despite winning the Lancashire League Twenty20 title on Friday night after defeating Rawtenstall, Burnley couldn’t continue their quest for five trophies against Paul Gaskell’s men.

“We got off to a slow start,” said Holt. “We lost a few early wickets and after that it was tough. Clitheroe bowled very well and timed their chase well but I am confident we will bounce back.

“We have only lost twice this season before then and both times we responded well and I am confident we can do that again against Rishton in the league on Sunday.

“We certainly want to finish the season with two more trophies now.

“It was a tough game on Sunday with the weather. At first we didn’t think the game had any chance but both sides wanted to get some sort of competitive result and in the end Clitheroe won it.”

It was a different story for Burnley on Friday night as they comfortably claimed the T20 title for the first time since 2009.

“We batted really well,” said Holt.

“David Brown came in and made it look easy, he was hitting it to all parts of the ground.

“It was the first toss we have won in the Twenty20 this season I think and it was an important one to win because it was getting dark when we were fielding and it was extremely hard to see the ball.

“It was great for the club to win it. Now we want to go on and win the league as well.”

Burnley maintained their eight-point advantage at the top of the table after a victory over Enfield on Saturday.
