ACCRINGTON caused an upset in the first round of the Fosters Worsley Cup as they put their poor league form to one side to knock out last season’s runners-up Rawtenstall.

Batting first, Rawtenstall were bowled out for 114 which Accrington surpassed for the loss of seven wickets.

Southworth and George Bevan gave Rawtenstall a solid start, both scoring 26, and professional Brett Pelser weighed in with 31 but after that Rawtenstall lost their last six wickets for 14 runs.

In reply, Clarke top scored with 38 as Accrington recorded an impressive win.

Vishal Tripathi scored 111 as holders Burnley began their defence with a bang, beating Haslingden by 194 runs. David Brown scored 52 in Burnley’s total of 288-6. In reply, Haslingden were bowled out for 94 with Jhangir Liaquat finishing with figures of 6-25.

Nelson beat Colne by four wickets thanks largely to an impressive knock of 60 from Russ Bradley and Daryn Smit took two wickets and scored an unbeaten 44 as Ramsbottom beat Church by five wickets.

And Lowerhouse beat Rishton by 94 runs with Jonny Whitehead top scoring with 60.
