Full-time: Preston North End 2 Burnley 1
BACK ON TERMS: James O'Connor fires Burnley level
BACK ON TERMS: James O'Connor fires Burnley level

BURNLEY'S play-off dream was shattered at Deepdale.

And to compound their misery, the Clarets ended the derby with 10 men after Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a collision with Sean St Ledger deep into stoppage time.

The Clarets struggled to recover after David Unsworth gifted Tamas Priskin the chance to put Preston in front in the fifth minute.

James O'Connor eventually got Burnley back on level terms eight minutes before the break, with a little help from goalkeeper Andy Lonergan's fumble.

But Preston restored their lead in the 54th minute, when the Clarets failed to deal with Paul McKenna's ball into the box, after the midfielder had played a short corner with Darren Carter.

Chris Brown pounced on a ball that the defence had failed to clear and rifled it beyond Brian Jensen.

THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER................
IT IS NOW!!!!
OWEN COYLE HAS FAILED TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THE TEAM FOR KEY MATCHES AS LOSSES TO PLYMOUTH, HULL, WOLVES AND NOW PRESTON ILLUSTRATES. THE NEW BILL SHANKLY? I THINK NOT!!
FLOOD AND KILBY FAILED TO PROVIDE THE INVESTMENT NEEDED TO BRING IN YOUNG , QUALITY PLAYERS, EITHER ON LOAN OR AS PERMANENT DEALS AND LEFT THE SQUAD BADLY DEPLETED BY INJURIES AND SUSPENSIONS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS OF THE SEASON.
IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ALL BUT A FEW DIEHARDS THAT IT WOULD ALL END IN TEARS AND SO IT HAS PROVED.

Well another defeat to PNE and yet another double over us too and helped again by an inept
defence.I agree with you 'Swindon Claret' we do need to rebuild right from the back. We need a defence that preferably are'nt drawing their pensions and don't need a zimmer frame to get around on.I do like Andy Cole but why bring in a player who is'nt fit? Surely it would have been better to have invested in a stricker to build for next season.I'm up at the Turf next week for the Barnsley game and although i'm a little dismayed by the false promises of the board and the inept descipline of the players i still love the club.I'm Portsmouth born and bred but give me Burnley any day, through ups and downs and many bad moods i'll still be here supporting this season and the next and for many more yet.Swinden as for that muppet i think deep down hes a secret clarets fan the amount of time he is spending on here. A ROOKIE MANAGER WITH LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL AND UNPROVEN AT CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL. A SQUAD OF PLAYERS WITH AN AVERAGE AGE OF AROUND 35+ MANY OF WHOM ARE ALMOST GERIATRICS. IF THIS WAS BRENDAN FLOODS BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS IT WAS DOOMED TO FAIL.
THE CHAIRMAN OF ST JOHNSTONE MUST HAVE BEEN LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. NEW BILL SHANKLY MY ARSE!!

What can I say! You cant expect to get into the playoffs with that team. They were second to every ball and showed no ambition. Would much rather have had a draw out of you lot and stuffed the Blackfool scum but hey ho. I think you need to rebuild more than us in the summer. See you next season.

OWEN COYLE SAID HE FELT "HURT" AFTER THE LOSS TO PLYMOUTH. HE ALSO FELT "HURT" AFTER DEFEAT BY HULL. HE ALSO FELT "HURT" AFTER GIFTING 3 POINTS TO WOLVES.
NO PRIZES FOR GUESSING HOW HE FELT AT 3PM THIS AFTERNOON.

don't put too much bame on coyle,a manager is only as good as his players and ours are not good enough.what is the point of keeping cole when he's crocked all the time,we are not getting our money's worth out of him.the defence is so slow it's like watching an episode of dads army.the blame lays firmly on mr. flood and co. we will never get a truly tried and tested manager with what we have to offer him,ie. no money and just content to avoid relegation.without a lot of investment for next season i believe we will be fighting against relegation all season.if the board won't invest when we were in the mix they surely are not going to invest at any time,or maybe just enough to try and avoid relegation.we need at the very least 7 players taking into consideration those who won't be here next season.we are in a real mess playing staff wise and that will be our downfall if flood don't cough up.

neva mind dingles , im a north end season ticket holder and in truth burnley played the better football for large parts of the game,Blake looks classy and some of your passing was top drawer.Keep backing your team guys, get off their backs cos youd be praising em if they`d won today.

I reall can't believe all you clarets carping on about results,You've had some blinding results this season, ok the last few games have let you down, but i don't see why ur all waving the white flag, theres still 18 points to play for,
stop whinging and get behind ur team...... you never know, we cant make it into the play offs but you can still do it....fer christ sake.

Lets get oday in perspective , had it not been for the beast we would have been dead and buried before we scored.
We again were beaten by a team that in realistic terms were no great shakes.
The defence is old and clueless ,mid field is mostly anonymous and the strike force past it.
This was a derby game , where was the steel and passion , apart from the last minute braineless challenge.
Empty promises and a manager out of his depth already , if he feels hurt after that he should have been in the crowd , but lets enjoy it because next season could be dire !

Absolutely dire yet again today no passion and no fight and no desire all the optimism about the premiership as now gone and so should the board and coyle he brought nothing in during the window of any note and cant inspire anyone pathetic once again another season wasted and by the looks of it it wont get better forget free premiership season tickets as it'll never happen with this lot in charge

WHEN BRENDAN FLOOD JOINED THE BURNLEY BOARD HE STRESSED THAT ONE OF THE FIRST OBJECTIVES WAS TO BRING IN YOUNGER, QUALITY PLAYERS, AND TO REDUCE THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE BURNLEY SQUAD. BY SIGNING A WHOLE HOST OF "HAS BEENS" AGED 35+ HE HAS DONE THE OPPOSITE. EVERY FAN KNOWS THAT THE DEFENCE IS TOO OLD AND TOO SLOW BUT BY SIGNING SO MANY OLD PLAYERS IT MEANS THAT MAJOR SURGERY IS NEEDED ON THE SQUAD DURING THE SUMMER. WILL FLOOD AND KILBY PROVIDE THE FUNDS - EVEN THOUGH IT IS OBVIOUS THAT McCANN AND LAFFERTY WILL BE SOLD. THE MONEY FROM THE GRAY AND THOMAS SALES HAS BEEN
ABSORBED.
WHERE ARE ALL THE UTC "HARDLY A SHAMBOLIC END TO THE SEASON", "WE CAN STILL MAKE THE PLAY-OFFS" GUYS. HAS THE PENNY FINALLY DROPPED?
Posted by: Nantwich whites, Cheshire on 11:42am Sun 23 Mar 08
Looking at your attendances for this season you are only getting 300 more than us and we have a stand down and no hope of getting in the play offs. You have to ask your selves where the money will come from in the summer to invest in your team? Like preston you are not a popular team like the London championship teams so big a sponser is unlikely. I can only sympathise with you all and as hard as it is to admitt Preston and Burnley are very simalar. Who knows I may win £70 million on the euro lottery and invest in North End to get us promoted next season.

There appears to be a pattern developing, which is being witnessed by 10,000+ fans, so, hopefully, if we can see it, then the manager and the board can too?

How many games have there been recently where the opposition goals have come from the Burnley defence "failing to clear the ball"?

I know from the last 3 games, I can think of 5 examples.

The thing is, this is not the only problem that Burnley have - there are a whole host of problems......

1) Age of players: The average age of the squad is far too old. The players may have been top-quality players in their day, but they are just past-it now, and these simple mistakes are proving this.

2) The midfield: "What midfield" many of you are probably saying. Well, even though O'Connor tries, he is too small and too slow to cut-it in the division. Gudjonsson can't pass, doesn't read the game and doesn't compete - basically, he is not good enough.

3) Playing players out of position: Why is Lafferty being played down the left? In the last 20 minutes of the Wolves game, he was switched to play through the middle, and he looked a lot more of a threat. Play him in his natural position, through the middle every week.

4) The playing staff: With people coming to the end of their contracts, and their ages, the board are going to need some serious money to get a good squad together for next season, if they are wanting to challenge for promotion. We basically need to have a proper clear out, and he goalkeeper, through the defence and midfield. I think we could get by with the strikers at the club, but we could do with a couple more in that department too.

5) Pressur to sell: We all know that there are a lot of clubs scouting our key players, and our home-grown talent. Elliott has yet to sign a contract, and he will prove a massive loss if we don't sign him. McCann is a decent player, as too is Lafferty, but it will be the same story - if a "big" club comes in for them with an offer of a couple of million quid, the board will sell. The thing is, the money will not be used to invest in the team.

All-in-all, I love the club, but I do think that it is run by muppets. I know people will think that they are businessmen, but if you had a business, would you run it in the same manner? I know I wouldn't.

I just wish the board would be straight with the fans as to what the aspirations for the club are, what sort of investments the manager has at his disposal and how the club will achieve their success.

Unfortunately, with the way the club is being run, I am growing more and more dis-interested, as all we seem to be getting at the minute, in fact, all we have had since Mr Flood took over is spin, lies and b*llshit! The club are in no more of a stronger position now than they were at the start of the season.

Yes, the club is losing money, but if the fans keep stayin away, then this financial hole will continue to grow. But, if the club doesn't invest, then they will not attract the fans back.

I know that after the Wolves game, I felt extremely short-changed after having to watch the poor standard of football that I had paid £24.00 to watch! Performances like that don't particularly attract me to the Barnsley game.

One last point - all the talk of loan signings before Thursday? No chance - its just paper talk to try and keep the fans interest at this part of the season.

The only good thing about yesterdays game was the early ko allowed us onto the M40 and home in very little traffic. It was a shambolic guttless roll over to a very poor team who at least played like they wanted to win
Posted by: sainsburys boozer on 1:57pm Sun 23 Mar 08
Went on yesterday.
No passion, no commitment and now no confidence. It was dire. Yes we played nicey nicey football in spells, absolute s*** for the rest of the game. We lubed ourselves up and let Preston ride us for an easy 3 points.
nuff said.

took you lot long enough to realise all youve emailed..i knew coyle was bad choice of manager and flood was a blagger..saying that its cotterills team not coyles, its worse team ive seen at turf in ages, preston lads agreed that weve a poor team..worse deffence in ages, looks like coyle cant motivate a team, weve done badly since he arrived..why coyle though as manager???hes from scotch leauge, were a badly run club,no direction or plans
Posted by: bluenwhite on 6:52pm Sun 23 Mar 08
The defence is def too slow. All too old.
Ged rid of laff for three mill and freshen up the squad. Buying oldies is no gud, if you go up half the team would then be too slow. The big diff in the prem is the pace.
Dont believe all the , "we will spend and get on loan" stories from the club. Rovers are doing the same just to boost season ticket sales.

Hate to tell you all but it's that time of the year again when BFC want our money for next seasons, season tickets.......I suggest a season ticket ban and keep our money in our pockets till we have the new team we deserve..just maybe Flood and co will listen then.....somehow I doubt it.....It is us the fans that are being lied too on a regular basis.it's about time we fought back and emptied the ground
