Consolation: Clarets striker Ade Akinbiyi nets for Burnley, but it was too little, too late

BURNLEY dropped further out of the play-off picture after slipping to a sixth home defeat of the season.

The Clarets were undone by two quickfire early goals that defied a bright start by Owen Coyle's men.

Seyi Olofinjana finished well in the 15th minute, after receiving Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's square ball.

Then Michael Gray got a lucky break as Gabor Kiraly's attempted clearance from Clarke Carlisle's short backpass rebounded off him on the edge of the box and went straight down the middle of the goalmouth to make it 2-0 two minutes later.

Kiraly was at fault as Wolves added a third 11 minutes into the second half, as Ebanks-Blake's shot from just outside the area squirmed underneath the Hungarian stopper's body.

Ade Akinbiyi pulled a goal back with just under 15 minutes remaining after he hammered home the rebound when his initial header from Kyle Lafferty's flick on was saved.

But it was too little, too late to salvage anything from the game.

Brierfield Celtic under 9'S WOULD AV BEEN BETTER...what a load of rubbish. Why oh why haven't we brought in more quality loan signings like Stoke and other teams in the Championship. Brendan Flood didn't come back to the Directors box after half-time - says it all.
If we don't make it to the play-offs the baord has a lot to answer for ..where is Floods promises of investment ????
Ade just didn't seem interested and we're so bloomin predictable ..everyone knows we get the ball to Wade and hope for the best ..

Well Preston is going to be an even bigger game than b4

Firstly we played absoulutly sh*** today, no anchorage to win the game. There was no power, fastness about our playing. The denfensive errors are getting out of control no strive to stop the opposition getting past them. I really don't know what has made them think they are good enough for the play-offs which are long gone now. Secondley the midfield where is the closing down, the passion in stopping the opposing team playing. Thirdley the strikers god almighty kyle lafferty is useless he can't control a ball to save his life, ade akinbiyi needs to b ack to training football school as he is as slow as a snail. Today show they wolves outplayed us by far they played to win and they were faster stronger and mostly powerful in the game. We need a new team faster, stronger and some taller players who can outrun, play to win and make our team a team that all other teams to be scared of. Finally Preston if you are watching todays game you can say we are going to win next week because our team don't stand a chance.

Any fans who are willing too pay for that crap want thier heads testing, turning up means you are happy with the lies put out by the board.Dont turn up and we might get some thing done, they are counting your hard earned cash and laughing at us.I have aletter in the post asking for my cost,s for the match.

THE LET STARTED QUOTING KIPLING AND THE PLAYERS RESPONDED BY PERFORMING LIKE A BUNCH OF TARTS!!
ACCORDING TO ROBBIE BLAKE THE CLARETS ARE FLYING UNDER OWEN COYLE - THEY JUST CRASH LANDED AND PLAY-OFF HOPES ARE WRECKED.
STOP BUYING PLAYERS IN THEIR MID TO LATE 30'S FLOOD AND KILBY AND INVEST IN SOME YOUNG QUALITY PLAYERS AS YOU KEEP PROMISING!!!!

cole is crocked 50% of the time ,randall can't get in the starting line up,what wonderful loan deals.play offs my ar5e.
i admit we play better football under coyle but the statistics show even under coyle this is nowhere near play off form.i can't believe the board past up the chance to give us a very good chance of promotion by not investing in january.flood keeps us afloat some say, well most of the fans would rather drown kicking and screaming rather than listen to more
of his lies,as for the players you are a disgrace,we could save money by paying players on performance, cos some of this lot would be skint.i said before and i will repeat it we will finish in 10th position at least 8 points behind the 6th placed club.

Dont complain, at least you can still reach playoffs if you win a couple. Cheer up ,we through away europe against a team that lost 4-0 three games in a row.

Today's match was such a massive let down...

I work in Preston and I was warned by PNE colleagues that Wolves were big and pacy - two things we are not, especially in midfield

We must have a policy of signing midgets, as our midfield were tolly over run and physically dominated by their lads - apart from McCann when fit/not banned all the rest are light weights!!

The defence is too square and milk turns faster than Varga!

If we are supposed to be offering Randall first team football, why is his arse warming the bench all the time??

Another season of disappointment beckons - we need to accept that the championship is mostly about who is biggest/fastest/stro
ngest - that's why Watford and Stoke are up there

The rest is so obvious that it's not worth repeating here - the Radio Lancashire phone in said it all

Inept is the word. Second to every ball, adi walkign about in the first half as the winger took the ball into their box as he stood by with hands on hips said it all. We dont have a keeper. We need two or three solid centre halves. We need to hunt in packs in the middle of the park as we did in early cottril days. We need a couple of strikers and as we know they dont grow on trees. We need to keep elliot and we need to sell lafferty, although the 3M reported is going ot be significsantly less by may / june. I am sick of payoing 20+ quid. The champiionship was wide open, flaming stoke top of the league?!!??? Jesus, everyones beating everyone and the quality is poor for all concerned. Cant even lay this one on the ref, and we have seen a few rotters on the turf this year. I am fed up - i wont be goign to PNE, and to be honest my hard earned £20 might just stay in my pocket next time round. Ambition my ar5e. New dawn???? Same sh1t different day if you ask me....

Most fans left the ground seething at having to watch yet another 90 minutes of absolute dross. It's too late now to change things. The fans are absolutely furious. Yet again Coyle gets turned over by a more experienced English manager. Yet again the players he picks fail to show. Let him practice in league 2, drop the half hearted for the rest of the season and send out a message to the fans who really have have just about had enough. No more no shows, no more inept team selections, no more apprenticeships for promising jocks.

I'll oblige as always. I wasn't there because I'm on an oil rig working (otherwise I'd been over for the Charlton & Wolves games. I understand from the reports we gifted Wolves the goals. Yes, that's not acceptable. But, there's always a but. I can't recall anybody wanting to spend millions on a new defence and/or a keeper. It was all about new forwards and midfielders. And spending a lot has really helped Charlton... There's no guarantee for success just by emptying your warchest. AND Coyle was given funds; his targets were too expensive or chose to go elsewhere. Not much you can do bout that, is there? C'mon, we're still in there, other teams lose too, and were Wolves a better team than us? Only 12500 for a 6 pointer, now that's worrying! UTC!

scenerio:-
end of season,lafferty,elli
ot sold.
vaga,cole,randall,re
turned.

alexander,blake,akin
byi,unsworth, past it.

jensen, kiraly ,spicer, jones, jordan and a few more not good enough.

this will require investment,a lot of investment.our team is in a dire position and without cash i think we will be relegated next season.
brand new stadium, division 1,average home gate of about 7000.all this could have been avoided if flood had brought 3 players in january with the cash from gray and thomas.
a stitch in time saves nine, too late now.

We've played some good stuff at times this season but when we keep throwing in such abject displays like this one maybe it's a blessing that we won't make the play-offs. We need some new young blood in the summer and it should start with a keeper!
Posted by: top cat, burnley on 2:04pm Sun 16 Mar 08
brook claret..spot on..every1 agrees..this team as exeeded all expectations, both keepers are poor, the deffence is to old to slow, midfield to small(not hard enough)forward line,i give in with them cant say what i think, andy payton and ron futcher would be on 40+ goals with chances them lot have had....i only hope preseason flood and co spend and get some season long loans in(decent 1s)not has beens..our deffence this season bar duff, are worst in a very long time..
Posted by: bluenwhite on 4:07pm Sun 16 Mar 08
why all the doom an gloom? you are still only one win from the playoffs!!
Playing rubbish and still bein up there means you only need to have a decent 3 game run and you are right in there.
Maybe they are saving the money for nxt year to pay for all those free season tickets.
Posted by: downtoearth on 4:21pm Sun 16 Mar 08
Robbie Blake reckoned the clarets were flying under Owen Coyle only for them to CRASH and BURN in a crucial match.
Summing up the current squad - TOO OLD, TOO SLOW and TWO DODGY KEEPERS.
Massive investment needed in Team Development in the close season but nearly all of the money will probably go on Ground Development instead.

redeveloping ground doesnt dent clubs finaces that much..football leauge give grants for that, and there generous too,so dont be fed that line about redevelopement costing us..no point having nice ground if we aint going to fill it???we struggle to get half a ground full!!doesnt make sense.this board dont make sense.whos botherd about how away fans feel??theres only cricket field needs doing, and ive seen worse.strange people this board lot, thought having flood on board would have helped matters.obviously not
Posted by: Waterbaby, Reading on 4:36pm Sun 16 Mar 08
Yes I was there and saw Wade hidingthe entire game . He played like a player who wants away. Kyle played off his head chasing everywhere ditto Ade.We cant play Joey,Alan and James O'C as our mdfield. Theyare too lightweight any one from 3 ok. Spot on re goalkeeper, strikers and midfield players .This is our best chance in years of a playoff spot we need players in now

Firstly-the board should have shown the door to Cotteril last season, and as I have said before; his claim when leaving that the next Manager would be lucky in terms of playing staff was "rubbish"
The management at Burnley have to "talk up" the odds but like the fans realise the team is far short of challenging for the play offs.
Sadly this seems to have been accepted some time ago-I believe like others that 3-4 players could have guaranteed a top six finish.
Q: Will the board support Owen Coyle in the close season-please Messrs Kilby and Flood-tell the fans either through this newspaper or other media.
A wholesale "clear out" should be considered, as the manager realised yesterday that the players dont possess the mentality for promotion.
Exit-Jensen-Kiraly (error prone) Jordan, Spicer, O'Connor (lightweight) Elliot (yes elliot mentally far from tough enough-a bottler)
Akibiyil-(too old) Lafferty (overrated)
Cash in and start again with a new nucleus.
I believe that Unsworth still has lots to offer-particularly behind the scenes (a fighter) whilst Blake and Alexander would give good support from the bench.
Hope its true that we are chasing Sam Vokes from Bournemouth (Newcastle also) but if the gut has any sense he would come to Burnley-they could manage to make Ronaldo look useless up there-and Keegan would sign a 3 legged pig if it had footballer stamped on its backside!
