Burnley quintet offered new deals

BURNLEY manager Owen Coyle has offered new deals to five out of the six remaining out-of-contract players.

Brian Jensen, David Unsworth, James O'Connor, Jon Harley and Jay Rodriguez have had new terms tabled, but midfielder John Spicer has been released, while Coyle has revealed he is prepared to listen to offers for goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly.

Veteran defender Unsworth has been asked to mull over a one-year deal as a player/coach, while 18-year-old striker Jay Rodriguez, who signed a one-year deal last summer, has been offered a new two-year contract.

Meanwhile, on-loan striker Andrew Cole has returned to Sunderland, but Coyle stressed that he will hold talks with the former Manchester United and England marksman should he be released by the Black Cats.

Other loan signings, Mark Randall and Stanislav Varga, have returned to Arsenal and Sunderland respectively, while midfielder Garreth O'Connor was released by the Clarets last week.

WHY ALL THE POSTINGS OF SHOCK AND SURPRISE? I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR THE PAST 4 WEEKS THAT THERE WOULD BE NO MAJOR CULL OF PLAYERS. MR FLOOD CERTAINLY HAS NO INTENTION OF GIVING MONEY FOR "A SUMMER SPENDING SPREE" AND THE CLUB NEED TO FIELD A TEAM OF 11 PLAYERS NEXT SEASON. GET REAL SOME OF YOU!!

To mkae us better we need a bigger squad - we need to keep what we have got and add new better players - so that the 5 mentioned will probably become second or even third choice players.

That said I would have been appalled if Harley and O'Connor had been released.

I assume that most of the postings above are attempts to wind up true claret fans by Rovers followers - the ones who can write that is!!

Well, last deal with each of these players individually........

1) Brian Jensen: Not a bad shot stopper, but far too inconsistant to be playing for Burnley FC at Championship level.

2) David Unsworth: When he plays, you can tell there is an obvious pedigree with him, due to the way he reads the game and passes a ball. However, too old, too slow and carrying a bit too much weight to be competing at Championship level.

3) James O'Connor: Tries his heart out when he figure, but too slow and too small to be a combative and competitive midfielder.

4) Jon Harley: Definately the best of the bunch. Well worth another season at the club to see if he can be part of a team which brings success.

5) Jay Rodriguez: Good things have been said about this lad. If hes young, then when not try and blood him over the course of the next couple of seasons - look at what has happened over the last few seasons with the likes of Chaplow and Lafferty.

As for Kiraly, who has been transfer listed - I seriously hope that the club aren't hoping for a fee for him. He has to be one of, if not the worst, keeper I have seen at the Turf, and I have been a regular for the last 17 seasons!

I have been keeping a finger on the pulse of the footballing world. That, coupled with a trend of signing older players on a free, why don't the club look at signing Darren Huckerby who has been released by Norwich, and Kevin Philips, who is not having his contract renewed by West Brom?

Huckerby has pace, and always looks a threat when going forward - either through the centre, or down either of the wings.

Philips meanwhile - what more do I need to say? He appears to have such a good footballing brain, and isn't scared of striking a ball - his goal-scoring record at this level speaks for itself!

Another addition I would like to see to the squad is a goalkeeper. However, there is not much young talent about, but a goalie who keeps fit can be at the top his game until his late thirties - just look at David James. Given this, why don't the club look at trying to sign Carlo Nash from Wigan. I believe they are willing to let him go for around £300k. I know her is a Burnley supporter as I used to stand on the longside with him in the 92-93 season, and his family live near Burnley - this is the type of player the club need - he would strive to do well for them!

However, the fans need to be prepared for no cash sprees this summer!!!
