Burnley boss left envious of Crystal Palace play-off party
PAINFUL: Owen Coyle and Steve Davis look on as Palace fans celebrate their 5-0 victory at Selhurst Park yesterday
PAINFUL: Owen Coyle and Steve Davis look on as Palace fans celebrate their 5-0 victory at Selhurst Park yesterday

OWEN Coyle wants to replicate the play-off party staged by Crystal Palace at Turf Moor next season.

But the Burnley manager admitted he faces a summer of wheeling and dealing in order to make it possible, after ending the 2007-08 season with a 5-0 thrashing at a packed Selhurst Park.

The Clarets, who were reduced to 10 men after just six minutes when Clarke Carlisle was sent off for the second time in seven games, had their defensive frailties cruelly exposed by a clinical Palace side, who finished fifth.

And Coyle, who last week offered a professional deal to 18-year-old Alex MacDonald, after releasing Garreth O'Connor, revealed he will spend tomorrow informing the remaining six players whose contracts expire in the summer of his decision on their futures.

"It reinforces what I knew we needed, in terms of personnel, and we'll endeavour to do that in the summer.

"Defensively we've not been good enough. Albeit it with 10 men (against Palace), there's no getting away from the fact that we've given away real soft goals from our point of view.

"It's hurtful. And I've told them to make sure nothing like that ever happens again, whether it's the last game of the season or not.

"I'll speak to the players on Tuesday and we'll take it from there.

"There will be some we make offers to and some we won't.

"We'll get a few coming in to add to what we've got."

FOLLOWING EACH SHAMBOLIC AND GUTLESS PERFORMANCE (UNDER COYLE THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW) OWEN ALWAYS SAYS THAT "HE FEELS HURT" AND URGES THE PLAYERS NOT TO REPEAT IT.WHICH OF COURSE THEY DO A FEW MATCHES LATER.
DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH OF THE DEAD WOOD TO BE CAST ADRIFT. COYLE HAS LITTLE MONEY TO SPEND AND IT WILL NOT ALLOW HIM TO BUY QUALITY PLAYERS - THAT'S IF HE WAS EVEN ABLE TO RECOGNISE ONE!!

U can have a play off party when ure back in scotland at some **** club where you will have more chance of winning somat.

wahaaay its chico time.
cant believe i ended up being the highlight of your season.

Now, wheres that pesky blimp?
Posted by: Adam, Burnley on 3:54pm Mon 5 May 08
Why cant you lot all go back to your own club pages and leave this for Burnley fans, we have shown we can play good football, we just need new players to fill in the gaping holes we have at present. Cotterill has brought in weak players who are too slow and too small. lets give Owen time to see who he brings in and how they perform.

Lets be positive

Didnt know they still had play offs for relegation!

Coyle, you live in a dream world if you think you can take this team to the play offs, only Stan Ternant got close to that. Coyle is the worst manager at Burnley since Waddle, I can remember us all shouting Teasdale out, this man was a god compared to Flood and Kilby.

No money, an unknown manager unable to attract "players", a board and directors who do not invest in the club or care about it apart from being a money making machine.

The futures very bleak for Burnley as long as this lot are in charge and its about time they all went, Flood and Kilby sell out to a proper "fan" who isn't a property developer eyeing up a town centre site, and Coyle go back to Scotland and get a manager who has a grasp on the English leagues.

so then the real work starts here

OC says he will clear out those not fit to play , well after tyhe last few games there will not be many left.
Yesterday it was an embaressment to wear the claret shirt , there is no pride
He will not clear out there will be a couple , we will build for the future , my back side.
DISGRACE, and please tell me how any claret got a score of over 2 in the paper REPORT THE TRUTH THESE PLAYERS WERE A DISGRACE TO THE CLUB!!!
next season , lets enjoy the cricket and forget all the rumours.......

I agree totally!

Coyle will not be having a play-off or promotion party at Burnley as long as I have an hole in my arse!

His teams have lacked quality, determination, guts, pride and passion - all of which should be qualities of a players who wants to wear the famous Claret shirt!

I remember reading on here a couple of days ago a comment about the teams of the mid-90's........how come we haven't seen a midfielder at the club who gives what John Deary gave? If only half of our defenders had the qualities of Steve Davis (Mk2) and John Pender? A quality winger like David Eyres? A striker like Andy Cooke? - None of these players were going to set the world on fire, but when they wore the Claret shirt, they ran their hearts out, and gave their all for the club. That is what we need!

If I had my way, they would all be given a basic salary of a minimal amount, and then large bonuses for winning - that would test a players characture! However, we probably wouldn't attract many players to the club, because we can't seem to attract winners!

"OWEN Coyle wants to replicate the play-off party staged by Crystal Palace at Turf Moor next season"

Remarkable lack of ambition before the next season has even started,

Ha Ha Ha,

A real club would aim for the automatic slots

by wheeling and dealing i can only assume coyle means sprottling about like a badly fowl picking up whats left after the stronger fowls have fed.we must be odds on next year for relegation.how many he times has he apologised to the fans regarding gutless performances at least 4? he goes on to say after each apology that he will sort it out, still they play with no passion or guts, they are a disgrace.these perfomances have gone on for years.barnsley 6 us 5. us 2 sheffield wed.7.remmber those results a few years ago?

What I would really like to hear about for Owen Coyle and for a large number of this under-achieving bunch of players is a "PAY OFF PARTY".
Posted by: tom walsh, rossendale on 5:18pm Tue 6 May 08
coyle appears to be a bit wimpish to me not enough steel to him. he seems to want to be Mr. nice guy. you cannot be that all the time. sometimes you have to be ruthless I do not think he has that in him.
Posted by: Richard the Palace fan, London on 6:04pm Tue 6 May 08
From a Palace perspective the game on Sunday was brilliant, however i did feel for you Burnley fans who came all the way down from the North West to see your team hammered, i got the impression your team were just counting down the minutes until their summer holidays!! That is not right!! You have every right to voice concerns.

We played well and had the run of the game for long periods but 5-0 is an absolute drubbing, no team should lose by that. Also, How your manager could say they were soft goals is a poor excuse, Sinclair running past 3 defenders then scoring from 15 yards. Victor Moses volley... Soft? Your team looked devoid of all ideas. I think you need to rebuild in the Summer starting with the manager!!
