ON THE RUN: Ade Akinbiyi comes up against Youl Mawene as Preston win the Lancashire derby
DISAPPOINTED Burnley boss Owen Coyle has vowed to strengthen in the summer after the Clarets slumped to a second consecutive defeat.
Further unforced errors cost them in Saturday's Lancashire derby, as in-form Preston North End recorded a 2-1 win.
And Coyle admitted he would endeavour to add new faces before the loan window closes on Thursday to retain a fighting chance of making the Championship play-offs this season.
The ambitious Scot has been linked with 20-year-old Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who has yet to make his debut for the Magpies.
But he may seek to land a more experienced stopper in the short term to put pressure on Gabor Kiraly and Brian Jensen, who have both been guilty of costly errors in recent matches against Plymouth, Hull and Wolves.
"Coming into the club as we did, we'd seen there was problems - that's why we got the job," he said. "We tried to paper over the cracks, and to an extent we did that and kept ourselves up there challenging.
advertisement
"But we know what's needed, there's no getting away from that.
"I've identified what we need to progress and develop the club, and come the fourth Thursday - or the summer definitely - then we'll do that and take the club onto the levels that we're looking for on a consistent basis.
"If you go and analyse our season you would find that goals are gifted.
"I can accept somebody working really hard and moving you about from side to side and scores a real footballing goal, or when somebody hits a 30-yard volley. That happens.
"But when you've got three or four opportunities to clear the ball in your box and you're not doing it, that tells me something needs to be sorted out."
Coyle was referring to Preston's winner, where Chris McCann, Steven Caldwell and Graham Alexander all had attempts to clear Paul McKenna's delivery from a short corner in the second half, while David Unsworth's half-clearance fell kindly for Tamas Priskin to finish for an early opener.
James O'Connor had made it 1-1 before the break with his third of the season, and Coyle felt a draw would have been a fair result.
"I don't think we should be leaving with nothing," he said.
"We've not had the bounce of the ball - especially with the second goal. There were three or four times where it could have been cleared and when eventually somebody went to kick the ball as hard as they could there was a mass of bodies and it's ricocheted perfectly for their lad to tap in from two or three yards.
"Sometimes that bounce of the ball or refereeing decision goes against you. Certainly the bounce of the ball went against us today.
"Having said that we still had enough time to get back in the game, as we showed in the first half.
"There were a few close-calls but we were certainly not as fluent in the second half as we were in the first."

"suddenly we've got problems in the centre half department next week"....am i wrong, but i'm fvckin sure we've "had problems" in the centre half for a lot longer than that. Anybody who reads these articles and joins in in the discussions will know my views at the moment. I have just been re-readin what Steven Caldwell has said, 5 wins and a draw wil do it, but ideally we need all 6. Get real. Coyle, you have known all along we have got 2 very dodgy keepers in Gabor and Brian. Why did you not attempt to sort this situation out sooner.I like the style with 6 games remaining that you are still on about persuing more loanees. Give it up, again too little too late, why fork out half of some players wages and add to the wage bill. No point now. Reading the table, Ipswich have a game in hand on, assuming they win it'll take them upto 62point, makin the gap 7 point off our position.Wolves have a game in hand, win that, they have 61, one point off! Shef Utd have done fantastic, 2 point behind us now, win it, they are above. Cardiff 3 point behind us, 2 games in hand on us. Come on, really, no point. Any Claret disagree? We would be on championship form if we won all six, and that we aint been close too all season. At this rat i will predict a 13th pisition finish for us. Just lucky we have got the coverted 50 points or we would be in a relegation wrangle. The board will argue that we are better off than last year, maybe so. But as you all know who read these, Us Clarets deserve a hell of a lot more. Same Sh!t, Different season!!!!!!

I see Ipswich have just signed Danny Simpson on loan from Man U. These are possibilities we should have been aiming for in the transfer winbdow. Goal Keepers, I'll say again, Ben Foster is almost certain to go out on loan for te rest of this season and next....Why not be ambitious and try an get his servises. For the rest of this season and lookin more long term on loan for next. He's been at Watford, amoungst others. Why not Burnley Fc, this it the ambition the Board and Manager should be showing.

So, Coyle has identified that we need a keeper? Well, correct me if I am wrong, but why go for a young lad who has no experience? Why not go and try our luck in getting Ben Foster on loan from Man United until the end of the season? He is young, keen, has Championship and premiership experience, and his manager will allow him to go out on loan until the end of the season - there would be nothing lost in asking the question.
However, I am very curious as to how Coyle will strengthen the squad over the summer - where is the money coming from, or are we going to be treated to other teams cast offs who simply aren't good enough, or are we once again going to treated to "experience" in the form of players who are coming to the end of their careers?
One message - its pension day in Bacup on Tuesday. Why not send a scout down there, because i've heard that George Sidebottom is a bit quick on his toes when he needs to be! Lets face it, at 93, he can't be much worse than we have now, and i'm sure one season would allow him to top-up his pension fund!
FOR GODS SAKE - PLEASE WILL PEOPLE AT THE CLUB START BEING STRAIGHT WITH THE FANS?
Respect is a two-way thing - you have to get respect, you have to give respect, and why should any genuine Burnley fan respect the board when they treat us like fools!
I know that during the transfer window, Mr Flood said that he didn;t want to reveal how much the club had to spend because it could inflate the value of the player by the selling club.
What a load of rubbish!
A player is worth what he is worth, and what a club are prepared to pay for him.
If two people go looking at a house worth £100,000 - one of them is a builder on £50,000 per year, and one is a shelf stacker on £10,000 per year, it is obvious that the builder can afford to pay more, but if he see potential in that house and wants to buy it, it is still only worth £100,000!
Its the same in football - if a player is worth £100,000, it doesn't matter whether Man United or Rossendale United are looking at him, he is still worth the same!
One bloke made a good point on here last week too about bidding for players - during the transfer window, burnley were linked with a player worth £1.5 million, but bid £400,000. Likewise on the housing front, if I bid £400,000 on a £1.5 million mansion, do I honestly think I am going to have my offer accepted? I think not!
It is time for the fans to put pressure on the board so that they start being straight with us.
In fact, I know I am only a single number, but until things change at the club, and they do start being straight with us, I will not be attending at any more home games, and whenever the subject of fottball crops up, I will be doing all I can to encourage people to adopt my stand and do the same!

Definate championship players
Carlisle
Caldwell
Akinbye
Gudjohnson
Can do a job for us (just about)
All the others should be shown the door in the summer regardless of whether they are still under contract or not! They ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH for this division and if the club is going to show any ambition, it needs a clear out, needs Coyle to take responsibility for his team, Coyle to spend in the summer and make that elusive bid for promotion! Just look at our league table - Hull, Bristol City in the top 6!! HOW?? They are 2 of the worst teams i have seen this year!! The worst team at the turf this year? BURNLEY!! Gifting goals - we used to have a fortress and struggle away but this is ridiculous now - and more so with PNE doing the double over us!! Coyle take responsibility, sort it out or walk!! This is the simple message from the fans!!

Straight talker. In agreement. I said near enough on the previons article. have a read. I have also been mentioning Ben Foster on here for the past couple of weeks. Needs more of us to actually do it though. I am honestly not goin home or away next season unless there is more honesty and a hell of a massive improvement squad wise. So thats 2 of us ST.

I hadn't actually read your comments about Ben Foster, but it is nice to see that there is somebody else out there who can see a bit of sense knowing that we need a keeper. If we did get Foster on loan this season, who knows, he may enjoy himself and want to come back next season, which would give us a good solid keeper.
However, it appears that whenever we get a premiership player on loan, they do well, and go onto bigger and better things - leaving us Burnley fans to dream of what could have been........Bardsley
, Cahill!
I really am going to have to stop coming on here because it really is winding me up.
We both know that the club needs massive investment, but where is the money coming from, and who can we get who would actually want to join Burnley?
We will no doubt end up with some Scottish players from their lower leagues. Saying that, I would rather give them the chance at the minute, than have to keep putting up with the likes of Akinbiyi, Gudjonnsson, O'Connor, Alezander, Kiraly and Co.

[bold]"Strengthen in the summer" nice one Owen Coyle what about for the last few games we have, you could go ahead with a couple more loan signings before that window closes this Thursday. As on a prevois page he said we could still be in play off chance if we win 5 out of six, how could he do that if we have the squad tht we have now. Get your head sorted sort something out and get some loan people in, and get the clarets fans back on your side before you lose all people confidence in you.[/bold]

This is our latest form table....it speaks for itself. 3rd bottom. this is no doubt relegation form, thank god we got the coverted 50point safety boundry, or we would be in the relegation mire that was last year! I too would rather see young blood than the ones we have now. It winds me up on here too, but it is a good way of letting off steam, and knowing its not only yourself and your particular group of frends that feel the same. Well we had eric dejemba-dejemba dint we. He left for bigger and better thngs, went of too Quatar. But just read only last week that he has now been declared bankrupt, so no wonder he went for a money spinning deal in the UAE. As for the last match day action, its no good just a couple of people doin it, i'm talkin the majority of the Longside or the Bob Lord or even the whole lot! if there would be media coverage of disgrunteled fans making their thoughts known, then thee board would have to take notice. All i am asking for is honesty from kilby and flood. I'd rather be fighting a relegation battle with that and knowing why as opposed to getting nowhere and fed lies.

He's treating us like idiots sayin we can still win a play off place, win the remaining 5 and draw one, thats a laugh, as you can see from the latest form guide of ours i just posted. Coyle is a Rookie manager with nil experience of managing in the English leagues., its totally different from managing St. Johnston in the Scottish first division, no disrespect to that league, but its no where near at the same level as the championship. Coyle has been brought in to be a yes man and agree with all the board say. There is no chance of decent signings now and if ther ewas its to late. We need a keeper, badly, i'm afraid "Pants" and Brian just dont cut it. Ben Foster is a target and just wants to play first team footie, he's been out on loan in this league befor, he's gonna go out again. Fvckin bid for him. Ipswich just got Danny simpson, decent defender, he's appeared 8 times for Utd first team this year and even appeared in the champs league. Sir Alex jusn't just let sh!t players into his team, he's decent. This will only boost ipswich. its too late now Katy and Coyle is too in the pockets off flood and kilby and by the sound of his talk brown licks them alot too, because he sounds just like them. There better be mass improvements in the summer. Get it sorted Flood, kilby and Coyle.

[bold]WHEN THE YOUNG PROSPECT KOFIE WAS ALLOWED TO JOIN MAN.UTD. FLOOD SHOULD HAVE NEGOTIATED A DEAL TO PERHAPS BRING A COUPLE OF MAN.UTD YOUNGSTERS TO THE TURF ON LOAN TO BOOST A PUSH FOR THE TOP 6.
INSTEAD, HE OPTED FOR A FRIENDLY AT THE TURF TO BRING IN REVENUE. ONCE AGAIN BALANCE SHEET BEFORE THE TEAM SHEET.
IF PLAYERS ARE GOING TO BE SIGNED FOR NEXT SEASON DOES THIS MEAN THAT LAFFERTY AND McCANN WILL BE SOLD TO FINANCE ANY NEW DEALS?
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE CLUB ARE GOING TO BRING PLAYERS IN ON LOAN WITH ONLY 6 GAMES LEFT TO TRY AND BOOST A PLAY-OFF BID. IF THEY DO FLOOD AND KILBY REALLY DO HAVE SOME QUESTIONS TO ANSWER AS TO WHY NO PLAYERS WERE SIGNED MANY MONTHS AGO DURING THE LOAN WINDOW. I POSTED NUMEROUS MESSAGES ON THIS SITE URGING THEM TO MAKE LOAN SIGNINGS DURING THAT PERIOD BUT THE CALL WENT UNHEEDED. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT COULD HAVE MADE - BOTH TO THE MOOD OF THE FANS AND TO CLUB FINANCES WITH A COUPLE OF PLAY-OFF MATCHES, TV MONEY, AND MAYBE A WEMBLEY PLAY-OFF FINAL.
FLOOD AND KILBY - YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME. YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!![/bold]

With all the lies and bull sh!t we're fed the board and now the manager are continuing to alienate the supporters. They are making us out to be fools by all the spiel of transfers and the premiership pledge. They just want our money to line their pocket. If yr all commenting on here, then you'll have read my rather lengthy views, so i wont go into them again. We need to somehow make our views heard to the board and the only way i can see this is by boycotting season tickets, they'll soon sh!t themselves then and start telling us the truth. We need to stop bein taken the **** out of. Its wrong. Bet you there wont be any decnt money spent on signings throughout the summer. We could really have done it this year with a little backin from the board like they said they would. Just total bollock babbling, and its really infuriating this Claret at the moment....Dont even want to mention Coyle, he's starting to become a proper let down, we're no better off now than we were under Cottrill. The "NEW BILL SHANKLEY", yr havin a laugh. Progress, ambition, i really cant see any. **** takers, the men in suits and they need to know how us supporters feel, and act on it.

I can't wait till the summer because, I admit, that a re-building process will be needed. Mr Coyle is a very good manager, attack minded, and with resources in the summer to bring players in we should do well next season.
Mr Coyle has done a great job since he has come in to the club, inherited Steve Cotterill's side and has done reasonably well.
If you look at some games we have played and deserved to win (i.e. Watford, Stoke, Leicester) and other games where we should have maybe got a point (i.e. Bristol City) then we would have more points on the board.
In the summer we do need a clear out (i.e. 8 to ten players out), so Mr Coyle can bring in his team. We will have some funds available to bring in players, surely we will. Mr Kilby and Mr Flood are Burnley fans and would love to see us in the Premeir League, for sure.
What if Burnley got in a terrible financial mess and we invested heavily on players and failed???? Then we would be in the mire??
We do not want to be another Leeds, Bradford do we???
We are punching above our weight for a club like ours. I would love to get to the Premier League and hopefully we will do soon. I love the Clarets and Mr Kilby and Mr Flood are trying to get as much investment into the club with the new hotel, facilities; so we are making money everyday of the week instead of on a match to match basis at home.
60% of our income is down to season tickets and we need as many there. The prices are good. If we can make the Turf a very hostile place with 15,000+ fans there each game then it will be a great place for our players to play and a terrible place for visiting teams.
The future is bright for Burnley. They is a building process to do and it does seem slow, but Messrs Flood and Kilby will hopefully get us up to the promised land.
I am fully behind Owen and the summer will be busy for him.
Claret Paul :)

I would keep these players;
Lafferty
McCann
Mahon
Caldwell
Elliott - contract need signing
James O'Connor - worth a new contract
Harley - contract need signing
Alexander
Carlisle
Duff
Berisha
Rodriguez
Kay
Akinbiyi
Blake
Spicer - new contract
But get rid of these players;
Gaz O'Connor
Jensen
Kiraly
Jordan
Jones
Cole
Varga
Randall
Gudjonsson
Unsworth.
The squad is good but not top 6 material. Of course the 3 players on loan will go back. We need to get some pace and some younger guys in and we should be okay.
I know Unsworth as done good but we need to look at the future. Maybe a coaching deal for Unsy???

Claret Paul, your having a laugh arent you.
J O'Conner - Not good enough
Caldwell - Too slow
Alexander - Too old and too slow
Akinbiyi - Not good enough anymore
Blake - Past it and too slow
Spicer - Not good enough
A clear out is needed. these players are simply not good enough if we are to push on. And please can we stop coming out every week with silly comments like we can still make the play offs. the dream is over for this season OC. Even the most die hard fans can see that. UTC

Personally I wouldn't be bothered if they all left, overpaid most of them, no effort most weeks. Odd flashes from Blake, thats about it. Amatuer footy for me next year.

Either that, or me and you don't watch the same Burnley team.
Lets deal with some of your points.....
1) you mention "resources in the Summer"? When you say resources, I assume you mean money? Where is this money coming from? Don't forget, there is a big black hole at Turf Moor which need filling on a regular basis, and it can only be filled with money. Ah, that's where the Thomas and Gray money went - there should still be £2.5 million of that left, seeing as we only spent £200k on Carlisle. The board have so far come out with many an empty promise, so why do you, and why should any other Burnley fan believe what they are told now? The board can only start getting fans on-side by being straight with them, and putting their money where their mouth is!
2) If we can make the Turf very hostile with 15000+ fans: where are these fans coming from? I can remember when each season ticket holder was given two free tickets to three recent home games - even then, the crowds didn't exceed 13,000. Also, is a fan more likely to turn up when the team is playing well and results are going well? I think the answer to this is yes - therefore, the way Burnley are playing at the moment, and the way recent results have gone are going to mean fewer supporters on the Barnsley game - no more than 11,000. The quality at football will not improve unless there are some new quality signings, which will obviously cost a few quid.
3) You also mention about the club investing heavily and getting into a mess: this will not happen because the suits upstairs are far too cautious with their money. Football is a big gamble, and to gamble, you have to take risks, and unfortunately, the things you have to risk are your money! I appreciate that the stake are high, but if the gamble pays off, the rewards are massive. I don't think that Stoke have gambled massively, but look at their position - they are virtually assured a play-off place, and they have a realistic chance of going up automatically! If the suits didn't wanty to gamble, then maybe they shouldn't have bought into a football club as a hobby!
There does appear to be a pattern to each of the responses doesn't there - the common denominator is money!
So far, Mr Flood has talked about it, but show far, we have not seen it!
He has been all talk and no action, and I firmly believe that every Burnley fan is worth more than that - I mean being lied to on a regular basis about investments and the aspirations of the club.
When Mr Whelan took over at Wigan all those years ago, he talked about being in the Premier league within 10 years. This was BACKED UP with big money signings and attracting better players to the club. Within that 10 year window, where was that club - thats right, in the Premiership!

Stoke havent gambled?! are you having a laugh?! they spent £2m on one centre half and spent around £5m in January! how is that not spending a lot of money! we are losing money left right and centre and if we go and spend millions on players and it doesnt pay off then we are still stuck with the same losses week in week out, in more debt, attendances still low so where woudl that leave us?! Leeds springs to mind ... everyone that thinks we are made of money and that the board arent spending anything are deluded ... Flood has put £5m of HIS OWN MONEY into this club and i reckon Kilby has put at least that ... and thats just to keep us afloat!
all you whingers are a joke ... i tell you what, why dont you put some of all your millions of pounds into this club and get no return for it, then see how you feel ... cos thats all its is ... investment of their own funds with a guaranteed no return on that investment ... we dont need negative fans, just realistic ones who know the facts and dont have crazy unrealistic expectations ... we were never going to make the playoffs cos there are too many other teams with more money, bigger crowds, £20m a year parachute payments and better financial backing than us ... get real!

Thier crowds are similar to ours, and they don't have any form of parachute payment do they?
So, you refer to "negative" fans? Are they not the realstic ones?
So, if someone isn't negative, then they must be positive? What do you have to be positive about at this moment in time as a Burnley supporter, knowing that with a few quid spent in January, we could have cemented our place in the play-offs by now.
It is not the fans who are negative - IT IS THE BOARD! They are full of spin, and don't believe in themselves!

Flood has put £5m of HIS OWN MONEY into this club and i reckon Kilby has put at least that ... and thats just to keep us afloat! all you whingers are a joke ... i tell you what, why dont you put some of all your millions of pounds into this club and get no return for it, then see how you feel ... cos thats all its is ... investment of their own funds with a guaranteed no return on that investment ... we dont need negative fans, just realistic ones who know the facts and dont have crazy unrealistic expectations ... we were never going to make the playoffs cos there are too many other teams with more money, bigger crowds, £20m a year parachute payments and better financial backing than us ... get real!
Okay, so Stoke have spent a lot of money by spending £7 million, but they are no bigger a club than Burnley.
