Coyle: Five wins for play-offs

HAND IT TO HIM: Owen Coyle tries to get Burnley going stood close to PNE counterpart Alan Irvine

BURNLEY have refused to give up all hope of making the top six this season.

However, both manager Owen Coyle and captain Steven Caldwell have conceded their target must be a minimum of five wins from their remaining six games to get close.

Results which filtered through in the aftermath of a 2-1 derby defeat to Preston North End meant the gap between the Clarets and sixth place was extended by only one point to four.

A draw between Plymouth and Watford, and a point for fellow challengers Wolves and Crystal Palace kept Burnley's slim play-off hopes alive.

"There are six games to go. With all due respect we'd probably have to win a minimum of five, and probably all six of those games, to figure in the play-offs," said Coyle.

"Having said that, those players have shown that when they're really tuned in as they are and not gifting soft goals that they're capable of doing that.

"But you would need to bounce back very quickly. At home next week against Barnsley provides the opportunity to do that.

"We're just disappointed not to take anything from a game we came here to win against a Preston side who have been doing terrific.

"I said to the lads, in terms of performance the first half was great.

"There was a lot within it to be pleased about, but the bottom line is we've conceded really soft goals and paid a heavy price for it."

But Caldwell insists he and his team-mates are prepared to do everything in their power to stay in play-off the frame.

"I think we need six wins to be honest, or something very close to that. Five and a draw maybe.

"It's crazy speculating though really. I think we need to just go and try to win every game, hope things go for us and we get there."

"It's bitterly disappointing but we have to be strong and professional at this stage and push on."

I am sorry to post this, but I am starting to lose patients with Mr Coyle and the inert drivel that he is beginning to come out with. We have no chance of getting into the playoffs or winning another game until he and the training staff sort out that pathetic excuse for a defence. OK both goalkeepers are suspect, but they clearly lack confidence and who can blame them when the defence melts away like a chocolate fireguard every time the opposition attacks. I suggest he tries some of the young reserves, they cannot do any worse.

playoffs my arse!...i am glad we have got 50 points otherwise would be worried about relegation the way we are playing..changing our keepers every other week and playing with about 8 combinations of centre halves doesnt help either...Owen to me lacks conviction and makes his substitutions far too late in games and they all seem to have litle impact..kyle was poor again yesterday yet played on injured for 10 mins..why?...mahon and randal would offer more to a game than kyle does..that £3m should have been taken...what a mistake!!
mcann stays on for 90 mins every week and contributes ?? nothing...he is not good enough for this level yet and we have so many other options in midfield...we are a poor team who has overachieved this year and we had a chance to address our weaknesses in JAN and in the loan market but have not invested yet again...not a happy claret!!

Win 5 out of 6 games!
At the rate we are going we will not win five more games this year , never mind this season.
Iam fed up of the drivel this man spouts after each game,SC did not see what was blatent but this chap is worse , and the board is taking us all for mugs again.
Patience is running very thin , all we ask for is commitment and a little truth!!!!!
Coyle hopefully he will be back in Jockland before next season

OK. I will do a deal with you BFC. You make the play-offs and i will renew my season ticket! This seems fair enough to me! But, being a gambling man, i would put my house on BFC NOT MAKING THE PLAY OFFS so i guess my money is safe in my pocket! The drivel coming out of Coyle's mouth is almost as bad as the drivel i have watched at the turf this year!

NO PASSION, NO PRIDE, NO ENTHUSIASM, NOT A SINGLE HAPPY CLARET FAN!!

OWEN COYLE you should start looking for another job because the fact that these are not your players and your obvious lack of tactical ability and inability to motivate established professional players has seriously been highlighted! Get a bet on at the bookies - Coyle out before xmas!! ITS A DEAD CERT!!

get rid of about 7 of them and start again kirali, alexander, unsworth, akinbiyi, mccann, g o connor and jenson also as we are as short in defence why not bring duff back hes playing in the reserves plus lafferty wasnt injured he starts limping every time we start getting beat and at the preston game would it not have been better putting wade down the left and blake on right when lafferty went off as blake is right footed and elliot had 2 men on him.

ps is elliot going to stoke anyone?

IN APPOINTING A ROOKIE MANAGER WITH NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT AT THIS LEVEL YOU HAVE TO QUESTION THE DECISION MAKING OF MR FLOOD. WAS IT NOT MR FLOOD WHO HAILED THE APPOINTMENT "OF THE NEW BILL SHANKLY" AND DECIDED NOT TO INVEST IN THE LOAN WINDOW LEAVING THE CLUB DOWN TO THE BARE BONES?
MR FLOOD HAS TRIED TO BUILD A TEAM "ON THE CHEAP" BY SIGNING SEVERAL PLAYERS AGED 35+ INSTEAD OF INVESTING IN YOUNGER QUALITY PLAYERS (WHICH WAS WHAT HE PROMISED TO DO WHEN HE JOINED THE BOARD) AND BURNLEY NOW HAVE A DEFENCE TOO OLD AND TOO SLOW WITH 2 DODGY KEEPES. WHAT MOTIVATION AND DESIRE DO PLAYERS AGED 35+ HAVE TO REACH THE PREMIERSHIP?
BIG GAME AGAINST PLYMOUTH - LOST.
BIG GAME AGAINST HULL - LOST.
BIG GAME AGAINST WOLVES - LOST.
BIG GAME AGAINST PRESTON - LOST.
AND NOW COYLE IS HOPING TO WIN THE NEXT 6 GAMES TO MAKE THE PLAY-OFFS!!
THE WORDS CLUTCHING AND STRAWS SPRING TO MIND. ALL OF THE CLUBS IN THE TOP 6 HAVE GOOD MANAGERS AND HAVE INVESTED MONEY IN PLAYERS WISELY AND USED THE LOAN MARKET EFFECTIVELY. END OF.

5 wins out of 6 games, that takes the pi55 out of optimism.we are going to need a giant clear out in the summer.the question is who are going to replace those leaving with no money?
elliot, lafferty will be sold and maybe mcann.
varga, cole and randall going home.at least 3 out of contracts wil not sign again.some of the rubbish about 4 players will have to go,one of the subbuteo goalkeepers will go.
thats 11 players going,7 if we keep some rubbish.we are going to need a miracle to survive in this league next season, unless some heavy money is put into the club to buy player.i don't think that will happen.fellow clarets prepare yourselves for a summer of lies from the board and a desperate fight against relegation next season.all could have been better if we had brought players in january.showing some ambition would have kept elliot, but not now he's on his way and i don't blame him.we could be left with the oldest squad in the league, has beens playing out their final days before retiring.it truly is a desperate situation and i can't see no light at the end of the tunnel.

I am afraid that Flood and Kilby have been the main instigators in Burnley's now seems wasted opportunity season to reach the Premiership. Laurel and Hardy (Flood and Kilby) started bragging about money was there for players this season did it come nope. I feel sorry for the departed SC we never got a right story why he walked away from the Turf probably fed up of false promises from Laurel and Hardy. Now OC is taking the flak because of these two. If Laurel and Hardy don't have the cash at least be honest with the Fans instead of treating them like the idiots that they are. I would not like to see Burnley go like quite a number of clubs bought by Fat Yanks who's main interest is profit before fans.

Best thing about this season is my wife's team that's Fulham look like joining us in the Championship next year.

We have been let down again by the board. We dont need Floods Hotel we've got The Oaks to stay at.I would like a reply to my letter sent to Flood 4 weeks ago demanding why Wade Elliots contract hasn't been sorted and where has the Andy Gray/Wayne Thomas money gone.We need 8,000 to break even and have been well over this .So whats all this talk about no money, its new Communications Director we need this ones got more spin than Alisdair

Look at the size of many of the clubs in this league and their wage bills. Clubs like Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton and Coventry City are fighting to avoid the drop. Burnley are a small town club punching above their weight and without directors loans etc we would be in League One. Burnley were a big club only when there was a maximum wage and we had a great youth policy. Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Watford are similar to us and have made it albeit briefly to the Premiership but Burnley spent the best part of 20 years out of the top two divisions between 1980 and 2000. We have a lot of catching up to do to even to be potential make-weights in the Premiership.

The thing that al supporters need to remember is that even if Burnley made it to the Prem with the TV money would Flood and co invest the money for Burnley to stay there, my guess is no not a chance, there policy is spend wise and be prudent, but you have to invest to stay, its a vicious circle, but even with investmen Burnley would do nothing with a manager like they have at present, he's not even championship quality

Why all the gloom and depression?
Any one with a minimum of sense knew the odds were being "talked up" in terms of play offs.
What should happen as stated previously-Messrs Kilby/Flood should commit funds publicly to the re-building of the team-then Coyle can be judged realistically.
As regards Cotteril-dont make me laugh He walked! pushed is the reality (should have gone last season) his signings are there for all to see.
The list of players for exit I would largely agree with, but feel Unsworth has lots to offer as a bench player and possibly coach.
As for Elliot (good on his day but those days dont happen often enough) he hides for too long when things are going bad -not alone there.
Owen Coyle has to try to remain optomistic-people would complain if he said the team were a shambles, no fight, no spine and too old.
However, in conclusion my patience with the club is wearing thin like everyone else-remember this mr Kilby/Flood YOU CAN FOOL ALL THE PEOPLE SOME OF THE TIME AND SOME ALL THE TIME--------BUT NOT ALL THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME

It was obvious to me from the moment Andy Gray was sold, and numerous press releases came out of Turf Moor from Owen Coyle and several senior players stating that Ade Akinbiyi was the natural successor, that this club had no real and genuine ambition to push for a play-off place. Flood and Kilby decided not to spend any of the funds from the sales of Thomas and Gray but to use that money for ground instead of team development. I also stated that Balance Sheet would always come before the Team Sheet.
Why all the fuss now that we are not going to make the top 6? Has the penny finally dropped for some of you?
As for fooling people, the only time that matters is the time that the season tickets go on sale!!!

zzzzzzzzzzz........ another big game lost and another load of bull about the next. We look all spent, there's no energy, invention or real interest. Five minutes into each game we throw in the towel. Why the LET prints this garbage from the club is beyond me. The fans are totally hacked off with Coyle and his half arsed lads - go away and shut up you losers. We're bored already.

Hi all. I have so far not put a comment on the forum as i am feeling really angry at the moment. i know you are always supposed to be optimistic as a supporter, but i think we should all be realistic! I mentioned last week that we should stop beind treated like dick h3ad5 by the board and told the truth about the clubs financial situation, i also suggested boycotting tickets. Nowthen i agree with a lot of the comments that have been posted, it is that thime of the season, and the board just want us to linr their pockets with our hard earned cash....and for what. We have a very old, sh!t team that have been punching above their weight all season, and now they have been knocked down a peg or 10, we have a rookie manager, who does not know the english game, not really MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE between him and Cotrill, Coyle had us playin "decent football" for about 2 weeks! A board that constantly treat us like fvckin idiots. All the promise of money for the team, bull sh!t. Where is it. My proposal is this....Until there is proof that we have shipped out all the old, slow, sh!t members of our limited squad, there's quite a few of them, replaced them and then doubled up on the positions with decent young players, DONT BUY TICKETS, simple. The same old sh!t will be said next season and the season after! it will just be a complete waste of 462 QUID, i know i cant afford to be wasting money of that nature. So my friends, until there's concrete proof of improvement, no more lies and spending happening on new players just do not buy a ticket.Complete waste of money and Flood and Kilby are laughing at us. its wrong and should not happen to any supporter... Look at Jewell at Derby, when he took over at least he told the fans we are gonna go down, but we'll sort it over the summer. Its not nice to hear, but at least he's got the guts to not feed the fans crap! Why dont our board just say. Sorry no money to invest. No players want to play for us because we have no ambition and just want to be a "top 25" team(way off that even now), We sacked Cottrill and just got the cheapest "yes man" we could find, who is quite happy to accept signing 36 year old loanees in transfer windows. As for the manager, show us supporters who see the games some fvckin respect,we wont win 5 games, and even if we did for your bad management and lack of balls to ask the board for funding we will still be short off the play off. I have now lost any respect i had for Coyle, as he is now feedin us the same sh!t Kilby and Flood do. Abismal, i am ashamed to support the Clarets and no wonder we are a laughing stock. I have stuck for them over the years against a load of Yorkshire folk who constantly rip the pi55 out of me for supporting them......I just cant do it any longer. We r the ones being taken the pi55 out of, by the board and manager alike. Bit my tongue until now, but had to type this on here.

I agree with many of your comments and your feelings at the moment. I am not quite in the same position as I doubted all along that the Board had any intention of financing a promotion push this season. I am sure that when Brendan Flood gives an interview at the end of the season that he will say much the same .... the team has punched above its weight, exceeded all expectations, but it was never part of the plan to gain promotion to the top flight this season. Like you I feel that it was an opportunity missed and was annoyed that no players joined during the Loan Window. When Paul Jewell spoke about "going down" are you certain he was talking about Derby County?

Have i got that wrong, I'm sure he's said something along those lines though,i could be wrong. All i mean though is that i'd appreciate as a genuine supporter being told the truth and not fed a lod of rubbish. I know yr supposed to support the "TEAM" through thick and thin, and i always will. But i dont have to support the board, and it makes it worse when the manager start harping on about us still getting a play off position. I'm very angry at the moment an i'm sure there are thousands more who are too. I jus wish we'd be told the truth. I rather be told "Listen we have no money for players, and we are loosing money wek in week out" Then least we'd know whats going on an appreciate our team more on the pitch for keping us in the division, if indeed monetry situation is indeed so bad. But if its not and the so called "board"are just pinching our hard earned money, then its not right. I also realise that promotion was never part of the plan this season, but surely with a little bit more investment to have bolstered the squad, we could have done in, every other team above around and even below us has done. If i am totally honest, i'd have taken the 50million that comes with promotion to the premier league, been quite happy to achieve the worse points total and be relegated with 30 million parachute funding. Number 1, at least we'll have experienced the premier league, number 2, that money would really help such an apparent skint club and number 3 if we had gained promotion, just think we could truly have held our heads high and say we have done it without lots of financial backing. I will always love Burnley FC, but really would like to be told the truth, i would have a liot more respect for the people in charge if they did. Thats my grumble, and i'm sure people will disagree with me and say i should back the board, but we should be entitled to our thoughs as we pay the money to watch the games, then in turn keeping the club a float. i hope the Chairman reads this, and honestly takes in how the supporters feel. And i really hope my views are proved un true by Flood and Kilby....But please just stop telling us lies. Go on the TV and tell us where our club really does stand and if we will have and money to improve the squad and if we dont, we'll take it on the chin and look to the future with a lot more communication towards the fans and not just being fed a load of media spiel. UTC
This is correct about Paul Jewell - after his first game in charge of Derby, the team had had a bit of a thumping off some other team, and during his Match Of The Day interview, Jewell said, words to the effect of, "We will go down, but we'll sort it out over the summer and take it from there."

This must have taken real guts, because at the time, Derby were in takeover talks with an American investment group.

However, I have never particularly like Jewell, but when he said this, I had to give him him the upmost respect for being stright with people and letting them know where they stand, and where the club stands.

Now, as a Burnley fan, would you rather the board be straight with us fans, or are you happy to keep listening to all this b*llshit they come out with about investment and hotels?

I know where I stand, and it is not with the board!

I can afford to buy a season ticket, but due to the lack of investment, why should I? Why should I pay £350 to watch the sh*te I have had to put up with at recent games. It is much easier to pick and choose my games. I would love to go on every game, but I am not paying all that money unless changes and improvements are made!

5 wins for the play-offs?

Judging by recent performances, I don't even think that the team will achieve FIVE POINTS between now and the end of the season, never mind five wins!

There does appear to be some sort of unrest and discontent amongst the Clarets faithful at this moment.

Well, why don't we all do something about this as people have already suggested.

I agree with boycotting the purchase of season tickets until the board are straight with us regarding how much will be invested in team rebuilding.

Hows about a protest at the last home match of the season, either by chanting, handing out leaflets, or not attending the game?

Something needs to be done so that Kilby and Flood start to take note of the fans!

Any suggestions please????????

I think in the long view a boycott of the season ticket is an option. i have been thinking this for a while now, suggested it here a week or 2 ago. I am not saying/doing this because i am not a true Claret, the reasons are as i have said previously. We deserve more than to be lied to. Honesty is the one thing i would love next to play off/promotion. As for the last match of the season:- to all season ticket holders and match day purchasers, stand outside the stadium, dont go on and watch the game, sing songs and wait until we get a responce. This will cause all sorts of congeston outside, an empty ground inside(always half empty anyway), gives media attention, then voice our views. The so called board would have to listen to us then. Nowt worse than bad publicity.

Nice suggestion!

Lets hope a few people read this, and maybe a few people may fancy getting together to get something sorted out to arrange this!

RETARDS? Define the word "RETARD"?

The Oxford English dictionary defines it as "make slow or late, delay acomplishment of".

I assume that you were trying to mean make out that the people who were coming up with suggestions of not going to home games are "thick"?

I think the term you were actually looking for is "retarded" - as in "I think we should do what the retarded people do and not go to home games."

Obviously, you aren't that well educated, otherwise you would have known this.

I will make an exception on this occasion though, seeing as you're a Burnley fan.

Anyway, what do you suggest? I assume you are happy with watching sh*te week-in week out? Watching Akinbiyi run around aimlessly each week? Being fed b*llshit off the board each week about signings and progress? Being fed the same off player about still being in with a chance of being promoted?

They are all in fantasy land! Unfortunately, some Burnley fans are living in fantasy land too! You need to wake up and smell the coffee - THE CLUB IS RUN BY IDIOTS, WHO TREAT THE FANS LIKE IDIOTS!

Retards = BRFC Fans.
Deadwood = Ewood
Ewood = Empty every week.
Do as the retards do = Dont go to games.

Iwas taking the mickey out of Retards bad crowds.

Now go and boil your head you dipsh1t.

So, if Owen is so confident of the Play-Offs, then why not have a wager on it?

I'd willingly bet him a grand that we don't!
