TITLE fight boxing is back in Blackburn next month at King George’s Hall.

Blackburn with Darwen Police ABC present Olympic Boxing Night which will be held in the town centre venue on Friday, May 5.

The show will include fighters from Blackburn and Darwen Police ABC but the top of the bill will be the two North West regional championship belts that will be contested for on the evening.

Novice ABA champion Bilal Rehman from Middleton Select ABC will take on Matthew Banks from Ardwick Lads Club in Manchester for the vacant 67 kg belt.

Also on the cards is the light heavyweight title fight where the much fancied Reece Fowler from Fulwood ABC in Preston defends his title against the highly-experienced Jack Massey from Northside ABC in Manchester.

The tournament will also include a team from the Royal Air Force as well as fighters from across the region.

Yaqoob Hussain MBE, head coach at Blackburn with Darwen Police ABC has helped organised the event and he said it promises to be a cracking.

“The bout between Fowler and Massey should be very good but there will be some local talent on show as well.”

Meanwhile, former Blackburn and Darwen Police fighter Shakeeb Ali returned to the club to show off his EBF belt.

Tickets are priced £10 and for more details contact the box office on 0844 8471664 or Yaqoob on 07787 570173.

  • Brian Roche’s Burnley boxing club continues to go from strength to strength – and two young stars notched up North West titles.

In the 57-60kg class George Drinkwater beat one of the favourites Danny Wright, from the Borshaw club in Middleton. Drinkwater eased to a 24-18 win.

And Blackburn’s Morgan Jackson was also a winner in the 71-75kg class - and avoided the Fury.

Jackson fought the nephew of Tyson Fury, Tom Scott from Lancaster’s Skerton ABC, and won 21-20. Scott’s mum is Fury’s aunt and the star boxer was at ringside for the event.

Roche said: “Tyson was brilliant at ring side and was shouting Tom on. It made it a special time for the lads.

“Morgan did so well and George really stepped up to the mark.

“The club is only five years old and already we have had nine champions and three of those were national champions. That’s a good effort in just five years.”
