Groves withdraws from Anderson bout
10:07am Tuesday 13th March 2012 in Boxing
KENNY Anderson’s British super middleweight title challenge against George Groves has been postponed after the champion withdrew due to medical reasons.
Anderson, who trains with Kevin Maree at the Stirk House gym in Gisburn, had been set for a rematch against Groves at Wembley Arena on Friday night – 16 months after he almost pulled off an upset before being stopped by the Londoner.
Groves has since gone on to beat James DeGale but Anderson was then made the mandatory challenger to the British title.
The bout was scheduled for this week, with Anderson confident of victory this time – having taken the first fight at short notice.
But it was announced last night that Groves, who has been linked with a world title challenge against German Robert Stieglitz, had withdrawn.
The news is a double blow for Maree because the whole Wembley show has now been postponed, meaning that fellow Stirk House fighter Jeff Thomas has also missed out on a British light middleweight eliminator against Sam Webb. Thomas had been given the golden opportunity to fight Webb after Matthew Hall pulled out.
Speaking about the Groves-Anderson fight, promoter Frank Warren said: “Once my team have spoken to Wembley about a new date I hope we can get this fight on very soon.”
