SHAYNE Singleton’s Engligh light-welterweight title defence against Tyrone Nurse next month has been put on ice after the classy Colne boxer failed to recover from a hand injury.

Singleton was set to face the Huddersfield fighter at Manchester’s Bowler’s Centre on Saturday, June 1, but the 23-year-old has been forced to pull out with the hand injury he sustained in beating Curtis Woodhouse to lift the title in March.

The fight will now go ahead sometime in September when the traditional boxing season resumes with Singleton forced to concentrate on fitness rather than bag work until he gets the all-clear.

“My hand is still not right from the Woodhouse fight. I’m really gutted as I am still on a massive high after beating Woodhouse,” said the 23-year-old.

“I wanted it more than anybody but at this level we can’t take risks and I have to be 100 per cent for every fight now.

“I will still be fighting Nurse in September when my hand has fully recovered and I plan to keep hold of my title and then I’ll move on to the British title.”
