    Full-time: Portsmouth 0 Blackburn Rovers 1
YOU'VE GOT TO HAND IT TO ROQUE: Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz is congratulated by Jason Roberts after scoring the winning goal in yesterday's 1-0 Premier League win at Portsmouth a result that keeps Rovers' Intertoto Cup hopes alive

ROQUE Santa Cruz kept Rovers' dreams of playing in Europe next season with his sixth goal in seven matches and 22nd of the season as Rovers claimed a late victory at Fratton Park.

Santa Cruz played a one-two with former Pompey striker Jason Roberts before firing past goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown, deputising for England's David James who was out with a calf injury.

Up front Pompey lacked teeth with only Jermain Defoe looking likely to score, having a goal disallowed for offside.

It was a 22nd goal of the season for the lethal Paraguayan - his sixth in the last seven matches - and a typical finish.

Ashdown had resisted Santa Cruz's aerial challenge by punching clear but when Pedersen gathered the ball and passed it to the striker and his give-and-go with Roberts took him clear to drill home.

It could have been two soon afterwards but the luckless Ashdown made another good save to defy Roberts, who unleashed a fierce shot on the run.

Pompey's efforts renewed when Chris Samba had to hobble off after an attempted slide tackle on Kranjcar but Andre Ooijer came on and Rovers comfortably held out.

Well from what I heard Rovers had a good game today, well played lads and a solid 3 points to cap it off. Sounds as if we might have a good end to the season with Derby and Birmingham to come, what do we need to do now to get the Intertoto spot? Only Pompey and City applied didn't they?

I think with a bit of cash to spend in the summer and with the hope none of our stars leave in the close season, we could get an automatic European qualification through the league next year. What a player Santa Cruz has turned out to be for us, let's hope we can keep hold of him. Vogel sounds like the Mr No-Nonsense man we have been looking for for a while in the centre too.

Any Ideas who Rovers may put a bid in for in the summer? If Fulham go down, Bullard looks like a quality buy, and could go cheap with them being in the Championship?

    Up the Blues!

Just got back from the game, we were brilliant. Another smash and grab from the boys and the roar at full time said it all.

You got back to Blackburn quick considering we played away on the South coast!!!

First half wasn’t the best but we played reasonable. Second half was much better. Gotta say Roque’s far by our best player this season, he’s been terrific. Brad once again was great, he made awesome saves. Our defence today was brill. All round once again we played fantastic. It looks like we’re still in the race for that Intertoto spot.
THE FIGHT FOR EUROPE IS STILL ON!!
    COME ON ROVERS!!

By the way you can only get 6 points out of the last 2 games not 8, unless a miracle happens.

Don't know if anyone has seen the News of the World today but apparently Alex Ferguson is lining up a £10m bid for Santa Cruz in the summer so it could be the last time we see him in a Rovers shirt after this season. He would score loads with the service he would get from the quality on their wings. I also think Mark Hughes will be the next Man Utd manager when Ferguson hangs his hairdryer up next season so this could be a good move for him if it is true.

no villa have put in for it to,

we need to win out last 2 games, and hope villa dont win the last 2 (not counting todays game) as villa have a much better goal diffrance

Well in all honesty we didnt play well, but thank god for the three points.
Pompey had the better chances but Santa does it once again.
I thought Gamst was awful today and Bentlet faded fast.
The good thing is Bents looked slow today and i think a few clubs watching will be put off by it.
Great 3 points but i still believe we wont hit Europe but il keep my fingers crossed.
    Sh!t Villa just scored!

we applied again. erm, pompey didnt.

what happends if pompey (who didnt apply to be in the intertoto) finish in 6th and we finish 7th (and we did apply)?

Same as last season, teams who didn't apply for the Intertoto or obtained a UEFA spot by other means (5th place, FA Cup, League Cup) are ignored and the top remaining Intertoto applicant is entered.

Pompey haven't applied so they don't count, Everton, Villa and I think City have. Everton will get 5th place, we need to finish above Villa and City. There is another long shot via the Fairplay league but I suspect we might not win that one ;).

Every place matters though at nearly half a million in prize money.

Let's take 6 points from the next two games and at least we will finish on a high. Looking forward to being at St Andrews on the last day to do our neighbours Bolton an indirect favour.

Not much chance of intertoto now. We need to win both games and villa have to draw and lose.

Hey Mike, i just realised how right you were about Reid he had a shocker against Pompey today. Realy wish we had Emmo bk in there again.

Im going to write to Sparky and tell him that we both think that Reid is wasted in that position. Hopefully he'll come to his senses hey Mike.

Great performance from thy guys today, and for me it was a well deserved 3 points.

The big positive for me today was Vogel, who totally bossed the game from midfield, and he never let pompy settle.
Roberts and Roque worked great together up front, and samba & nelson looked back to their best.
I would still rather see Reid and Emo back in their normal positions, but overall it was a top performance, Hope we get the consistancy going for next season

To be fair reid was never really tested today, apart from the cynical tackle he made to get booked.

Jamie, please stop harrasing me everytime im on this board. I don't want to be your friend.

Sorry mate, i was just tired after a long journey back from Fratton Park and the first person i thought of was you.

Thankyou for confirming you know what ur talking about when it omes to Rovers.

Then again maybe the game looked different on sky!!!!

Emmerton looked like a Phenom in midfield today, bossed everything he had at least several touches of the ball, Chelsea will be Kicking themselves blowing £30m on Ballack when they could have Had Emmo for £1m who can play in a number of roles.

    Simply Breathtaking!!

Can we meet for a drink sometime?

Chelsea got ballack on a free transfer, and I did not even mention Emerton's performance in my post. It was Vogel who I felt bossed the game, who u urself gave a good report about before he signed.

What exactly is ur problem jamie?

Even some of us very far away! Unfortunately, until I save enough for a trip overseas, I can't see the boys play in person. I keep hoping for a friendly to the States some day. There were actually a few rumors of such on this end for a while. Anyone over there hear of any such thing?

Great crucial away victory away today! Too bad Everton displayed such crappy defending. Slim though it is, however, we still have a shot at Europe. As old Jesse Jackson says - "Keep hope alive!"

    Are you having a laugh?
You have prooved that you tell lies.
You dont know who i am but thats a laugh what you said about Derbs not being liked!
Just shows you have no connexions at the the club.
Derbs is one of the most genuine, liked lads at the club.
Id suggest you dont talk too much as it looks like your already making enough enemies.
Grow up Jamie, your making a fool of yourself.
And if your going to comment on players make sure its regarding football and not utter garbage.

Im actually quite flattered that someone stayed up until midnight last night, pretending to be me.

At least me and Jamie can agree on something, u really are a saddo, u should get a life Mr.impersonator.

So have u got the bottle to tell us who u really are then, coz I think people may have realised, it's not me saying this.

I went to see Rovers play DC United at the RFK Stadium in Washington for a pre-season game when Souness was still the manager.

Hughes did get Nelsen from DC United, so that may well be the seed of the rumours, however I haven't heard anything about it happening again.
