ANOTHER ROQUE SHOW: Roque Santa Cruz celebrates his 20th goal of the season for Rovers
BLACKBURN Rovers came within minutes of recording a famous victory against Manchester United in this thriller at Ewood Park.
Inspired by the magnificent Brad Friedel, Mark Hughes' side took the lead against the champions-elect, courtesy of Roque Santa Cruz's 20th goal of the season, and appeared to be heading for all three points until Carlos Tevez popped up with an 88th minute equaliser to get the visitors off the hook.
However, Hughes can be proud of his players' efforts on the day after they pushed United all the way in a breathless North West derby.
Needing a positive result to keep their European dream alive, Rovers emerged with real purpose and might have had a penalty inside six minutes.
Paul Scholes carelessly gave the ball away on the edge of his own penalty area and Santa Cruz's shot was deflected straight to Jason Roberts, who suddenly found himself in on goal.
The striker took a touch and then appeared to get caught by United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, but referee Rob Styles waved away Rovers' penalty appeals.

Mark Hughes' side then had a let-off themselves in the 11th minute when Carlos Tevez fluffed a golden chance to put United ahead.
Wayne Rooney outfoxed Ryan Nelsen on the right before whipping a low cross into the centre but, six yards out and completely unmarked, Tevez missed his kick and Chris Samba was able to smuggle the ball to safety.
That proved to be a costly miss as Rovers then snatched the lead 10 minutes later.
Morten Gamst Pedersen's long throw into the area caused confusion between Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and the ball cannoned off Roberts straight to Santa Cruz, who made no mistake with a clinical finish from 10 yards out.
That lit the blue-touch paper for an explosive 20-minute period.
First, Cristiano Ronaldo fired in a testing free kick that brought the best out of Brad Friedel.
Then, at the opposite end, Kuszczak did even better to repel a 30-yard screamer from David Bentley.
As half-time approached, Friedel then came to Rovers' rescue again, reacting brilliantly to palm away Ronaldo's point-blank header.
Sir Alex Ferguson threw on Nani in place of Ryan Giggs at the beginning of the second half in the hope his presence might inject more urgency into United's play, but Rovers continued to defend tigerishly.
Ronaldo cracked a shot against the base of the post following a mistake by Steven Reid, and Friedel pulled off a miraculous save to thwart Tevez following yet more United pressure.
However, it was far from one-way traffic as Santa Cruz went close with a header, and a Pedersen cross-shot was almost turned in by Nelsen at the far post.
Still United kept coming, but Friedel saved the day again, this time denying Rooney in a one-on-one.
Eventually something had to give and Friedel was finally beaten in the 88th minute, Tevez rising to score with a header after Scholes had flicked on a corner.

Oh my God! What a game. The boys in blue and white played their hearts out today, and I am a proud fan. What a heartbreaker at the end, though. Like you said though, True Blue, not much to do about that Manyoo goal.
By the way, the announcer here made it sound like Rovers are out of contention for Intertoto, but True Blue's comment sounds like we still have a chance. Anyone have the definitive answer on this one?
One final comment, as an American:
BRAD FRIEDEL FOR PRESIDENT!

Portsmout have not applied and will probably win the FA Cup (gives an UEFA place. So they are of no interest for us - except next week where we have to beat them :-)
Aston Villa have apllied. Im 99 % sure that City have applied for the Intertoto Cup as well.
So its still kind of open.

11 minutes gone, 73% Utd, 26% Rovers. I don't think it changed much after that. Absolutely dicked and lucky to get a point, but fair play we stuck to it. I can see why people say we are the dirtiest team in the Prem though.

If any team was guilty of dirty challenges it was the team in red, not blue and white. Rooney's two-footed hack at Samba would have had the media screaming for a red card had it been a Rovers player. Vidic can consider himself very fortunate not to have gone in the book for a cynical challenge on Roberts. And Brown could have been booked too.

1st half we was ok, second half we was really awful we should of gone all out to finish game off but instead we just tryed to defend for 45 minutes against argubuly the best team in the world at the minute (i think) what was hughes thinking off(was it me or at times was santa cruz playing right back) it was obvious at some point in second half they would of scored. anyway season over now lets build for next year, what a another solid performace by freeds in goal 4 world class saves through out game which made it so we got a valuable point well played man u second half you really deserved to score and good luck and lets keep the league up north

Some of you need to stop bein so pesimistic and get behind the team for a change!
Well done rovers!

They fought a vastly superior Utd team hammer and tooth and were 2nd best on everything except spirit, fight and determination.
Hughesy was happy with a point because we were playing the best team in the country (possibly Europe).
I was proud to be a Rover today and the result was unexpected fantastic.
Vogel had a great game, so calm so balanced, you can see his class. Next season he will boss that midfield.

I missed the game due to travel but am told the Rovers played well, very well
If they had won the game, what would the "gripers" moan about?
Get over your selves and support the team, whingers!!

Gotta say the lads display was absolutely terrific. All round, the team played well. You have to give full credit to Brad Friedel he was sensational with his saves, and he was worthy for the man of the match award. After Roques goal in the 21st minute I was very positive all throughout and thought we were gonna take all 3 points. Morten Gamst Pedersen’s run was fantastic, and if that ball had only gone in by a few millimetres ohhh God what a goal it could have been. Vogel took his time in settling in but he proved what his made of, he was great.
The ref took his time in making his decisions and I thought many of them went against us.
Mark Hughes chose a great team with great tactics and the formation was perfect. Since he’s arrived at Ewood the management’s been tremendous.
The atmosphere was phenomenal, the support we had was brilliant. A full house and a great display made this far by one of the best games of the season.
The last few minutes were very nerve racking and then for them to equalise in the closing stages of the game was very harsh. I thought the corner that bought in the goal wasn’t meant to be in the first place, because the ball came of one of their players which was meant to be a goal kick.
I thought we deserved all 3 points. To take one and lose the other two hurt.
GREAT DISPLAY BY ROVERS!!
THE FIGHT FOR EUROPE IS STILL ON!!
COME ON ROVERS!!

Thought everyone played very well today, especially Friedel, Santa Cruz and Warnock. Vogel showed glimpses of what he could offer next season given a run of games.
Nice to see Ewoood full today - the atmosphere was good - shame it was full of United fans though and not Rovers fans.
You've got to ask what's happening in the ticket office, anytime I've tried to buy extra tickets they've had to go in the back and ask their manager - even though I've had a season ticket for 15 years.
Hopefully this display will give Hughes a stronger argument when it comes to loosening the purse strings in the summer.

Fabulous performance by the Rovers last night. Don't know what Fergie's moaning about - we had a good early shout for a penalty & Rooney was lucky to stay on the field for his challenge on Samba. Still plenty to look forward to down Ewood! Up the Rovers!

Great effort from the Rovers. So near yet so far!
Look at the three teams immediately above and below us and in terms of spending, they have all invested much larger sums of money than the Rovers. Surely after yet another season of superb management and the team punching well above its weight, this summer should be the time for major backing from the club. It shouldn't need to be pointed out to the Walker family that the point of diminishing returns will sooner or later come in to being. So either back the management and protect your investment or sell the club and allow others to invest. Can't help thinking that the late Jack Walker would have backed Hughes to the hilt.

Tremendously spirited performance from Rovers. 100% effort all round. The score was fair. Referee was dire but his mistakes evened out. None of the penalty claims were for "offences" that would have stopped a goal (ex perhaps the one on Roberts) and their goal came from a corner that should have been a goal kick. A few points of note:
1. The switch of Reid and Emerton worked. Reid has been really poor lately and was much better at RB.
2. Rovers worst player was clearly Nelson. This is worrying. In the first 15 mins basic mistakes by Nelson should have handed MU 2 goals but they fluffed their opportunities. This was fortunate. United dominated the early stages, Rovers had no confidence and, had they scored then we could have been looking at the humiliating score some of us feared.
3. Their error gave us our goal and after that the heads were held high and they fought and played superbly.
4. UNTIL the last 20 mins or so when, as we have seen so many times before, they thought "we have got to defend this lead" and the defensive line dropped further and further back. Why....? when they had played so well throughout the middle of the match. Thereafter it seemed inevitable they wouldscore and we owe a draw entirely to Brad.

United were terrible in the 1st half and did not actually put out their best team, i hate to say it but scholes and giggs are now past it more so giggs who in this game and several previous 1s has passed the ball so badly it is unbelievable.
Utd were great in the 2nd half and deserved the equaliser if not a win and also 2 pens that were not given, Fair play to the rovers tho they always give us a hard game and for some reason Friedel always has the game of his life against us. We just need to beat chelseas 100 unbeaten run at the bridge now , which i am sure we will do.

Good game yesterday, at the start i thought we would have lost by 3 or 4 goals - but
brad again proved why he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league,
samba, nelsen, both had good games
pederson prob his best game of the season, chased back got forward, took players on, some good balls into the box. and i loved the tackle on ronaldo where he almost snapped him in half..
if pedersons cross come shot had gone in or admiral had got on the end of it then it would have been 2-0 game over..
man u may have had more of the ball, but its how many goals you get that matters, they got one we got one point desevered by both teams.
shame we have not played with that much passion, fight all season as we would have been higher than we are now.
i think come next hughes needs to drum it into the players heads that every game is a massive game, not just the ones against the big 4, even if we play hull (if they come up) then its a massive game..
think out players drop their heads against the lower teams which is why we come unstuck

right i think its going to get well confusing come the end of the season.
i dont think we need to finish above city to get that intertoto place, as they may get into the uefa though fair play league.
which means we only need to get above villa now.

I was livid with the lads for dropping so deep & encouraging Utd on to us albeit I'm sure they were out on there legs at that point.
Your right it was a moral victory & I hope we put as much in for the remaining games for that final push into the 'INTER TOTO'....
I was pleased with Rovers fans yesterday because we got stuck into the ref with vigor & most definatley kept the game on a even keel.
Brad is just beyond any more plaudits for a performance of absolute 'WORLD CLASS' I reckon he will get save(s) of the season.
Vogel will be a master in that holding role & Cruz what a guy(is he a defender too?)

Hey Roy, I did not know there was a place in Manchester called Burnley!!!
Great effort from Rovers. Superb atmosphere at ground as well. Three wins now to get intertoto. Cmon bham today.
Anyone know anymore about the takeover on the front page of the people today?

what an entertaining game, another solid perfromance by freeds how good were them 4 saves 1st of all from ronaldo, then to top that one from tevez rooney and then o shea a real shame he isnt english as i think he is argubly the best shot stopper in the prem, lets hope he can still play to 40 years of age. a game of two halfs 1st half we just edged it even though they had best chance through tevez but second half it was one way traffic they shown why they are and still will be champions they through everything at us and could of easily had 3 goals, dont know why we just sat back and let them come on us, anyway overall top half finish and finishing one or two places better than last year is a slight improvment. bring on next year well done freidal for yesterday and mark hughes keep up the hard work

Couldn't have given anymore than they did, everybody gave 100%.If the lads perform like they did yesterday in the next three games, we will have 61 points on the board and the club should be proud of their achievements regardless.

youve gone down in my estimation mate if you think i would come on here and write such rubbish, i was at the game so ive no idea what pecentages were. to be honest i just couldnt see utd scoring 10 mins to go i was confident we were going to hold out.
the whole team was awesome, brad out of this world, santa worked his socks of, and even though they had a few chances late in the game the defence was superb, vogel in CM is giving us a view of how good he's going to be next year.
to all true rovers fans out there

It was a Nail-biting game in the Premier League. Carlos Tevez had missed an early chance missing from 4 yards out! It was a scrappy first few minutes unitil Santa Cruz scored his 20th goal of the Season. Scrappy defending from United's back four had cost themSoon after Ronaldo had a 25 yard free kick saved (one of many) by Man of the Match Friedel. Rooney was booked as he miss times his tackle on Samba. After Half time, United had a lot of the possesion. But still United couldn't create a clear cut chance. Many Penalty appeals were waved away by the Referee. Time was running out for Manchester United - Blackburns defence was solid.
Wayne Rooney had picked up an injury. Now being a major injury for their champions league game against Barca. In the last few minutes, their was light at the end of the tunnel. Carlos Tevez scored from a Nani corner to equalise.
