CONSOLATION STRIKE: Roque Santa Cruz bags his 19th goal of the season at the death but it's all too late for Rovers
Second-half strikes from Liverpool's terrible twosome of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres took the Anfield men five points clear of local rivals Everton in fourth spot.
Gerrard scored his 21st goal of the season after a fine passing move on the hour, and the Liverpool skipper then created Torres' 30th of the season with eight minutes left.
The pair have now passed 50 between them for the season, with substitute Andriy Voronin adding the third before Roque Santa Cruz netted for Rovers, both in the final seconds.
Roberts appealed for a penalty after 71 minutes following a clash with Martin Skrtel - TV replays suggesting he was more sinner than sinned against.
But when the same pair clashed again a minute later, Skrtel was only booked, much to the disgust of Roberts, whose annoyance could be heard all around the ground.
Rovers, who sent on Benni McCarthy for Pedersen a minute later, were far from out of it and David Bentley sent a 25-yard free-kick just wide.

But Torres ended the dispute after 82 minutes, seconds after Samba looked to have bundled the Spaniard over just outside the box, but again referee Wiley was not impressed.
Liverpool's reaction was emphatic. Lucas won possession and fed Gerrard on the right. And when the cross curled into the box, Torres was there to head wide of Friedel.
Gerrard was denied another penalty by the official as he fell under a Samba challenge, before Torres was spared any further involvement, allowing Andriy Voronin a late run-out.
And in the final minute the Ukrainian slid home the third from substitute John Arne Riise's low cross.
In injury-time Santa Cruz fired home a terrific effort after a poor header from Skrtel.

I think in a way a game like this wasnt such a bad thing at this stage of the season. It showed up a few players for us
Bentley - Selfish, wasteful, didnt cope under pressure.
RSC/Roberts - Worked hard but had no real service
Emerton - slow, clumsy asked alot of his team-mates (Samba had to cover him constantly today) that always happens though.
Vogel - Neat and tidy, realy felt sorry for him being dragged of to be replaced by Dunny who wasnt half as good
MGP - Time to look for 2 new wingers. As Bents will go and MGP needs to be dropped, as he's played 4 decent games out of 40 this season.
Ive got no suggestions who to buy but If i was MH I'd know who needs to be replaced from the starting 11.
Sorry Brett your top of that list compared to Steven Warnock on the left your simply woeful.
Ah well, we'll see!!

I can not believe what I've just seen. We were absolutley appauling. We are supposed to be a team pushing for Europe but not on that performance.
Anyway the positives Vogel had an ok game compared to last week. Nelsen and samba had a good game and Roberts an Santa Cruz were unlucky unfront.
Skertel should have gone if that had have been Samba or Nlesen they would have ben off!! And Roberts was never offside!!!

Showed up for what we are today. A slightly over achieving middle table team. We are ok against bottom half teams but no chance against the top 6. Only Bents capable of running at and beating a man.
Apart from that, the passing of everyone was terrible. Both goals were due to lazy , wastefull panic passing.
Glad im not hughesy, dont know how he is going to sort it out for next season. At least europes gone now, so no distractions.
Superb finish by santa but he needs another class player up there with him. Roberts loads of effort but terrible touch and no vision, mccarthy ok touch but no effort.

A very disappointing, expensive and wasteful afternoon. This match can only have confirmed the anxieties of many Rovers' supporters. We are badly lacking in midfield and until this area is sorted, we will only continue to see constant pressure on our defence and a forward line starved of sevice and opportunities. As Bentley looks increasingly likely to go, as a minimum, I'd suggest that we need two class additions. Will Vogel ever be strong enough for the demands of our game, will Reid ever recapture his pre injury form and has Pedersen levelled out into mediocrity. Finally, can anyone explain the logic of giving Benni a longer improved contract after a fitful 2nd season when his performances merit no more than a place on the bench - can't imagine anyone breaking the door down for him now.

Agree with everything you say Mike. Only one victory against any in the top 10 shows how limited we are. I would have thought Reid has had enough time to at least show glimpses of the levels he reached two seasons ago, but he hasn't. I also have doubts about Vogel. But from now to the end of the season we need Dunny or Tugay in centre mid (if not both) to create something. Cannot rely on Bentley every game. We have over-achieved this season. With WHU, Spurs, Newcastle, all bound to do better next season we will find it hard to finish in the top half. Signings for next season - WHU are supposed to be looking to offload ? Bellamy. And if Fulham go down, anyone fancy Jimmy Bullard?

Well we were poor theres no doubt about that, But i don't think we should hammer Rovers too much, we are 9th in the league, and considering the lack of money the club has and the competition getting harder and harder in The Premiership I think we have done alright overall.
Blackburn Rovers to me are an established top 10 side. The problem Sparky now faces is trying to push this side to the next level. The only way that can be acheived is by money simple as (Ok it doesn't gurantee you anything) but it would be nice.

Pure garbage, we looked like a team that wasn't interested. With the exception of Friedel a rating of 4/10 for anybody else would be generous.
we couldn't string three passes together, and defensively we looked like a kamikaze suicide squad. Up front I have a blunt hammer at home that had more of a cutting edge.
next Saturday could well be a horror unless MH sorts them out.

Let me just say that the way we played today was reasonable. The problem was that too many of our players were giving the ball away too easily. Big Chris did fantastic, even though half of his tackles were fouls. Warnock also played well against his former club, Nelly did some awesome defending and Pedersen took a stunning free kick which saw Reina catch the ball. Capello was seen in the crowd and I don’t think he saw too much of Bentley. New boy Vogel played ok for his second game in the premiership. After Dunny and Benni came on from the bench, I thought the game got on a roll.
Gotta say the ref played a brilliant role and we should be great full he didn’t give away a penalty.
I think we could have had a draw of three a piece. The first when Roberts was seen to be offside by the ref, but from where I saw it he was in line with Skrtel. Secondly when Skrtel pulled back Roberts to stop him from getting on the score sheet. And the final one was when Santa Cruz fired the ball behind the net.
Players switched off when the ball was given away, and too much space was given to Liverpool to score. That Skrtel deserved to be shown a red and to put three past us just took the ****. Disappointing result. The few games remaining have to be kept in control, and we can only afford draws and wins. The competition to qualify for Europe is getting tighter.
THE FIGHT FOR EUROPE IS STILL ON!!
COME ON ROVERS!!

[/quote] You have great optimism but you will win **** all with that.
Today we looked off the pace from start to finish.
Second to nearly every ball, getting cauht in possession to often.
Lack of movement, in fact at times the ball was stopped dead st platers feet!
Where is the tempo, why are we not keeping the ball moving?
Our only bit of success was a few long balls to Roberts yet we still struggled to knock a few of them over!
Bentley made a fool of himself arguing with Pedersen over who gets to take a free kick!
where the players not briefed before hand on set peieces and roles and responsibilities?
We have only won 1 game against teams in top 10.
The future looks grim unless we invest!

There were some animals out there today. There was Gerrard the tiger in mid-field. There was Brad the cat. Oh and Samba the DONKEY!
We were out fought out thought and totally humiliated.
Make the most of next season it will be our last in the Prem for a good few years.

Dont talk rubbish, we are a mid table team who got outplayed and outthought by a champions league semi-finalist.
We wont be top of league but we wont get relegated either.
What do you expect for the money we spend and the support we have? Torres cost more than all our team put together.Instead of moaning take some more people to the game.

When the ball is in our half why cant we just clear it (into row Z if need be) instead of playing clever 1 touch passing in our own area. This has cost us another 2 goals today.
I think we should leave Vogel until next season, once he is fully match fit after some pre season football.

Mike Berry, you are bang out of order and should show a bit more respect.Back to football matters. Top ten finish for a club the size of Blackburn Rovers is a tremendous achievement in itself.Without wanting to state the obvious, some of the supporters forget that we are boxing well above our weight and have limited funds and support. In reality, we are an average championship sized club year after year over achieving and annoying the supporters from the other average sized Lancashire championship clubs who can only dream of ever seeing Premiership football season after season, enjoy it while it lasts and never take it for granted.

Yaaaawwwwn, your probably one of these supporters who think Rovers are going to win the Premiership next season again and then go on to win the European Cup the season after.Mind you, your probably not old enough to remember when Rovers used to have vocal support and get crowds of 6,000.Ask your dad about the party we had on Ewood in 1975.Hope you enjoy your annual visit to Ewood next weekend with the rest of the plastic Rovers supporters.

i cant see how people take positives away from tht performance?! weve been dreadful ever since and tht summed up our season! we havent over acheived weve bloomin underacheived! with the players we have we shud be challenging everton. at the start of the season hughes promised a push for 4th place and were nowhere near! any gettin fed up of hughes and his seeing the positive in everything even tho were playing the worst football in league at the moment?!!! last seasons poor league position was compensated by our excellent cup run! but we go knocked out straight away in every cup this season with no effort shown what so ever! and handin benni a new deal is beyond! hes not fit and hes not interested! pedersen, emerton, reid and benni have been awful all season and have to be offloaded! bad start to next season and hughes has to go in my eyes! not a happy chappy after a woeful season! wouldnt mind if we played exciting attractive football but im going nuts from seeing giving the ball away so often cz we cant pass!

Too many individual errors cost us BUT if that Roberts goal is allowed & Skirtel get sent off then it's very much a different game. Still what do you expect from Wiley - we've only managed to win one out of the last 21 games in which he's officiated our games.

We were very poor, but it was only 2 bad passes for the first 2 goals, they should have put the ball out rather than try to play out of trouble, but were not the onloy team who does that.
But as an England fan as well I was dissappointed in Gerrard, never mind the Euro's he should be going to China for the Diving Team, a sure gold medal.

Do you men when everyone heard the whistle and stopped so Roberts put the ball in the net?
Ha ha ha ha desperate or what, Roberts should have been booked for kicking ball away.
Thats how desperate you are for a goal.

I don't usually comment on these pages but I refer to John Myles report "Time for a reality check at Rovers".
He says "Let's face it, losing to Liverpool at Anfield..........."
"So it was asking a lot for Rovers to go there and get a result" THEY GOT A RESULT - THEY LOST!! The sooner these pundits get their reporting right the better it will be for everybody. "How pedantic, I hear you say!!" But a result is a win, a draw or a loss"
