Santa Cruz has 20/20 vision

By Andy Neild »

IN-FORM hitman Roque Santa Cruz has set his sights on the magical 20 goals mark following his brace in the 3-1 victory against Wigan.

The Paraguayan international, who has been a revelation since he joined Blackburn from Bayern Munich last summer, took his personal tally for the campaign to 18 with his double against the Latics.

But while the 26-year-old has already surpassed all expectations during a fine debut season in English football, Santa Cruz insists he won't be truly happy unless he breaks through the 20-goals barrier, which is the barometer by which all strikers like to be judged.

"I am very happy with my total of 18 goals so far," said Rovers' leading scorer, who has now scored five times against Wigan alone this term.

"I am just going to keep trying for the rest of the season and, hopefully, keep scoring.

"My first season has gone well but I won't be happy unless I keep scoring so we will see how things go."

Although Santa Cruz has stopped short of setting himself any specific targets for the run-in, he feels at least two more goals during the remaining seven games is the minimum requirement.

"Twenty is seen as the magic number but who knows? I am not going to make any targets - let's just see how far I can I go before the end of the season," said the striker.

"The philosophy of the team, and how they play, affect how many opportunities you get as a striker.

"As a striker, you could end up with less chances to score (if the team doesn't play well)."

Rovers boss Mark Hughes paid just £3.8 million to land Santa Cruz last summer, which now looks like one of the best pieces of transfer business in the Premier League over the last 12 months.

When he first arrived in England, one of the biggest question marks against the South American was his goals record, because he had never scored more than six goals in a season during his eight-year stay at Bayern.

However, Santa Cruz has since answered his critics in the most emphatic way possible, which has earned him the respect of the fans and his new team-mates.

Recognising his contribution to Rovers' European push, strike-partner Jason Roberts, who also got on the scoresheet against Wigan, said: "Roque's been fantastic.

"You only have to look at the amount of goals he has scored in his first season in English football to see he's been different class.

"He works hard, he scores goals, and he's effective.

"I think the only problem he has had in the past has been injuries but it looks like he's going to go through this season fit, and if he does that then it will be a big step for him.

"If his fitness isn't a problem, then I think he will score goals and put in top-class performances - no danger.

"It would be an outstanding achievement if he scored 20 goals in his first season in England, and I don't see any reason why he won't.

"Since he's come here, he's been unreal, very much like Benni (McCarthy) was last year.

"It's unbelievable and fair play to the manager for bringing him here."

Rovers' victory over Wigan, coupled with results elsewhere, means they still have an excellent chance of qualifying for the Intertoto Cup, and hopefully Europe.

Santa Cruz added: "Everyone wants to play in the UEFA Cup again.

"We want to end up in exactly the position we have been planning for since the start of the season.

"It's going to be tough but it is still a very realistic possibility and we are in a position where we believe we can achieve our goals."

Blackburn's Bentley wanted by Liverpool
tribalfooball.com - March 23, 2008

It is believed that Rafael Benitez is confident of making David Bentley a Liverpool player.

There has been reports that Liverpool are set to make a £12million bid for the 23-year-old winger, claims Kop-TV.

It is known that both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are in a tug-of-war over the young English winger.

Liverpool are desperately looking for a winger to replace Harry Kewell whose contract is running out soon. Furthermore, Bentley is proven in the Premier league.

The England winger contracts run out in July 2011, which means Liverpool or Atletico may have to fork out a large sum to get their man.

Manchester City and Valencia are among a host of other clubs interested

And Berbatov is priced at £32 mio - any bid for bentley for only £12 mio would be disrespectful and shouldnt be dignified with an answer.

Obviously Bentley will be sold at some time, but it has to be for a hell of a lot more than what has been mentioned in the media - we should explore that prices are over inflated!

AND MH has proven that he will not sell key players even if they want to go - i. e Mcarthy and Roberts. This is the way to go - except when players "give up" like Benni.

we are going to get this speculation from now until Bents leaves, whether thats at the end of this season or end of next season.
£12M theyve got to be joking though.
i suppose though its whether he's got escape clauses in his present contract or a 'trigger'.
in my view every player has a price and if he was to go so long as we got the right money for him then all the best, but you never know hughsie's golden tongue might be enough to keep him here.

Ah here we go again Benitez coming out again with his puffed out chest, confident he will get his man because it's Liverpool.

He did exactly the same with Bellamy 'no problem he supports Liverpool' & look what happened to him- a bit part player in the infamous rotation policy !!
Benitez wants to take a good long look at himself & realise just why he as never got close to winning the Prem. His total disdain towards the culture of English football sticks in my gullet.

If Bentley goes to Liverpool I put bets on it that it will be the biggest mistake of his footballing career.

As much as I have respect for Liverpool I truly believe the philoshopy of that club is wrong for todays Prem. Benitez is fast becoming a clown & who is no nearer to achieving the holy grail. For me the guy is pig ignorant.

As for 12mil,if Rovers go with that they want lynching. Bentley is worth twice as much. We need to keep hold of him.Summer willreveal that.

For those who say Berbatov is twice the player of Bentley your another deluded individual.
Show me the stats that prove thats the case?
Berbatov is over valued simply because Man Utd are interested & of course it's a London club so the value must be right!!
The Prem trophy will land again in the North West,in it's rightful place.
As they say footballs coming home to were it all began!!

I wouldn't worry about Bentley going to Liverpool chances are Benitez wont even be there next season. As for Roberts getting a run in the team at the min I can only see Hughes doing this so he can put him in the shop window for the summer. The more goals he scores from now till the end of the season the more money we will get for him in the summer

Chances are Mike you could be right on that?

My biggest concern for Bentley is that if he goes to Liverpool I dont see the football they play will compliment him.

I personally feel he needs a club that will bring him on,Liverpool & there brand of football will not do that.
Sundays game against Utd quite clearly highlighted just how far away they are with Benitez at the helm.

He just doesn't get English football!!

Look at what MH as achieved considering what he as spent in relation to Liverpool?
Get Benitez to a club where he as to earn his corn- with nothing!!

Bentley must stay at BRFC unless some-one of real class comes in for him. Then I would have no problems with him leaving so as he can ply is trade on the biggest stage(which they all say they want). Give MH a budget to match his ambition & he will take BRFC right to the battle front of honors.
Then there would be no need for Bentley to go anywhere & he would even be complimented with further class.
Like Ossy states 'Hughes & his silver tongue' could just be the key to keeping him here...

Do we want Bentley to stay?
Then I suggest we get down to Ewood Park & sing until our lungs burst with the echo of 'BENTLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
EEY IS OUR GOD'!!

I agree with all the points previously. I do think Berbatov is a better player than Bents but I think £16m is a fair price for a top player like him.

It's testament to MH that we can make posts claiming that a £12m bid for a player we paid £1m for is too low.

I think he will go in the summer and to Liverpool, but were not getting the Bellamy treatment this time. We should make them pay for that!!! £4m over the odds should do it.

If Berbatov is worth £32m then I assume you must mean Marcu Bent is worth £16m? Because if Berbatov is a Rolls then our Bentley is of the same class with a far superior attitude and work rate and no sulks - £35m min - but Ossy you have me worried about that escape clause!!

Morst and Ossy - an escape clause is a terrible thing to bring up. I was under the impression that MH and the rest of the gang had learnt from their mistakes! :-)

And if not - had showed a bit more forthsight than putting the buy out fee at only £12 mio. I really cant stand to go through this again! Come back Bellamy )-;

What have we learned in Blackburn in recent years: NO BUY-OUT clauses please :-)

That said - I wouldnt be surprised if there was one - as a compensation for his "poor" salary.

I am glad that MH has finally realised that Benni is a lazy so & so. Jason Roberts played his socks off on Saturday, that is what Roque needs to partner him up front, somebody who is strong and can hold up the ball. They look good together R&R, bit like S&S from years gone by. Please give Jase a chance boys.
And on the subject of Bents I don't think he will go anywhere for next few years unless the manager was to leave, I think he has lots of respect for MH, he brought him out of the dark from the Arsenal. Bellamy has done nothing since he left us, he was greedy, it serves him right.
