Hughes: Bentley relishing Beckham role

MARK Hughes hopes Fabio Capello will award David Beckham his 100th England cap on Wednesday night - then it will leave the way clear for David Bentley to finally emerge from his shadow.

Hughes believes Becks has earned the right to join an exclusive group of players in England's 100 club, after serving his country with great distinction during the course of the last decade.

But, while the Blackburn boss is quick to acknowledge Beckham's contribution to England's past, he ultimately believes that Bentley represents the nation's future.

The Rovers chief, who was fulsome in his praise of Bentley after the midfielder played a starring role in the weekend win over Wigan, said: "David Beckham, for me, deserves his 100th cap, irrespective of whether that affects my player as manager of Blackburn Rovers.

"That can't be denied considering what he's done for his country and how he's applied himself, not only as captain, but as a player.

"We don't have a problem with that.

"But at some point David Beckham will leave the international scene and we hope David Bentley will replace him.

"He will relish Wednesday night.

"He loves being involved with England. He's worked hard to get to the position where's he viewed as an England international, which is the case now.

"I think he's gone from being a squad player to being a viable starter in many positions for England.

"That's credit to him and that's because he's worked extremely hard at his game. "When you do that as a player, you get your rewards."

Bentley was at his talismanic best against Wigan, setting up the first goal for Roque Santa Cruz with a stinging shot that proved too hot to handle for England goalie Chris Kirkland.

The Latics were then handed a route back into the game following the dismissal of Chris Samba and the award of a penalty, which Marlon King confidently converted.

However, spurred on by the irrepressible Bentley, Rovers' 10 men continued to force the pace, and they deservedly regained the lead on the stroke of half-time, courtesy of Jason Roberts.

Bentley then provided further breathing space when he supplied a sumptuous cross for Santa Cruz to head his second goal of the game midway through the second half.

Referring to Samba's dismissal, Hughes said: "Chris had his hand on Emile Heskey's shoulder and we felt he went down too easily.

"The punishment didn't fit the crime."

How can Bentley not be in the team, he was simply outstanding in a midfield playing a man down for nearly the entire match. And don't get me started on Santa Cruz, he hasn't even made Gareth's squad let alone team sheet. Freddie Sears? Give me a break, he played about half hour while Rocky was scoring two and setting up the other whilst working his knackers off.

Go hang yourself Gareth you tw@t...
