PAIN GAME: Jason Roberts looks on as Wigan's Erik Edman suffers a serious injury
BLACKBURN Rovers stole a march on their rivals for an Intertoto place thanks to this hard-fought victory against Wigan Athletic.
Two goals from Roque Santa Cruz, either side of a Jason Roberts strike, earned 10-man Rovers three richly deserved points on an afternoon of drama at Ewood Park.
This was sweet revenge for the 5-3 defeat Rovers suffered when these two sides met at the JJB Stadium in December.
On that day, Santa Cruz bagged a hat-trick but still finished on the losing side.
This time, however, the Paraguayan did pick up a win bonus after scoring two headed goals to lay the foundations for this welcome victory.
The former Bayern Munich ace bagged his first of the afternoon in the 11th minute, when he pounced to score from close range after Chris Kirkland fumbled a long-range drive from the excellent David Bentley.

However, that lead lasted barely five minutes before Wigan were back on level terms, and Rovers were reduced to 10-men.
Chris Samba saw red for denying Emile Heskey a clear goalscoring opportunity, and Marlon King confidently dispatched the resulting penalty.
Unperturbed by that set-back, Rovers continued to look the better side and they regained the lead right on the stroke of half-time, when Roberts turned past a defender and stroked a cool finish under Kirkland.
Rovers then gave themselves further breathing space in the 63rd minute, Bentley sending over a sublime cross for Santa Cruz to power home a header at the far post.
To compund Wigan's frustrations, they were also reduced to 10-men in the closing stages, Wilson Palacios seeing red for a second bookable offence in the 69th minute.
With Aston Villa also losing at home to Sunderland, and Manchester City only drawing at Bolton, it turned out to be an excellent afternoon all round for Mark Hughes' men.
Rovers: Friedel, Ooijer, Khizanishvili, Samba, Warnock, Bentley, Reid, Dunn, Pedersen, Roberts, Santa Cruz. Subs: Tugay (for Roberts, 79),Mokoena (for Dunn, 84), McCarthy (for Santa Cruz, 90) Not used: Derbyshire, Brown.
Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Scharner, Edman, Valencia, Palacios, Brown, Kilbane, King, Heskey. Subs: Taylor (for Edman, 41), Bent (for King, 64) Not used: Aghahowa, Bramble, Pollitt
Referee: Mr M Dean (Cheshire)
Why in Hades can't the lads play with such spirit in EVERY game?
Well done! However, had this dedication been shown throughout the entire schedule, we'd be a shoo-in for European football next season.
Sparky MUST instil the 'killer instinct', for next season!
Nevertheless, a praiseworthy win, without doubt!

great result considering the circumstances.
hughes decision to question the future of all players
top marks to the lads just hope newcastle or west ham come and offer us 10 mil for benni and we will throw in the axe for free.
6th is definetly back on now with the mackems beating villa

And the road for Europe is open again!
Finally a well played and well deserved win for the guys.

Agreed,a vital win under circumstances dictated by stupid rules that dont fit the crime.(SAMBA)
1.Sending off
2.Goal
3.Suspension
4.A possible loss of 3 points
All for, at best a clumsy challenge.
Wigan most definately where poor at best but Rovers went about the task with a will to win this one.
I think we are destined for Euro football next season even [bold]if[/bold] it comes through the long route.
A good good win.
Santa-excellent.

Hello Rovers Fans.
Dont want to burst a few bubbles but again you only pick up points against a relegation threatened poor outfit.
Everybody knows that Wigan only get results on thier awful pitch.
You scraped a point against Fulham and got a leson off West Ham.
Your pathetic season will fizzle out with a few defeats and perhaps a few more goals for Santa Cruz before a top 6 club offers him a wage that you can only dream of.
Then want away manager Mark Hughes can get stuck into that 10million war chest ha ha ha ha 10 million what a joke!!
Enjoy today hope the empty seats enjoyed the game!
I hope Stoke come up, thier stadium was packed, with great support teams deserve Premiership football

Who said i was a Stoke fan???
I used Stoke as an example you thick Rovers nerd.
Your team can only beat the poor form teams but saying that West Ham beat you after thier 4-0 drubbings!!
Your not in the same league as any of the top 6.
Your a lucky Championship club with a decent manager.
Definately the smallest club in the Prem.

That’s what I call team work. Let’s hope we carry on this form for the rest of the season even though we’ve got some tough games ahead of us. Everyone played their role, and it’s a shame that Samba got sent off. Never the less we got the three points we needed and the fight for that euro or interto spot is still on. Well played lads.[bold]COME ON ROVERS!![/bold]

Gutted 4 Big Chris but he'll mature.

Wigan Council have just banned Christmas next year - they don't want to see any more Santas!
A friend said to Paul - Heather is a bit unstable - He replied just put a couple of beer mats under her leg and she'll be fine.
Paul once bought her a plane for Xmas - and a lady shave for the other leg.
Sorry bad jokes I know!

[bold]Can we have a proper discussion on here for once instead of the mindless slanging matches. Really, what's the point of them??[/bold]
I've had a change of heart following Bentley's heroics against Wigan. He's a major impact player, we shouldn't sell him.
If Mark gets this 10M to spend this summer we can sell Mokoena, Dunn and Gallacher, that will give Mark a total of around 17M to spend.
Now, Bellamy and Michael Bradley should be our top targets, cause we need to be signing players that are better than the ones we have. 5M a piece should secure them.
So that leaves us with 7M to spend on a Holding Central Midfielder (i don't think necesarily we can rely on Vogel for long, he's 31 anyway) and a First Choice right-back, which looks like Rudy Matter
from Valenciennes who costs 2M.
After Matter that leaves us 5M to spend on the central midfielder.
Mark is interested in Tom Huddlestone for that figure. I'm not sure. Bellamy and Michael Bradley will significantly improve the team and we'll score a lot more goals with them, especially with Bradley's goals from midfield which we badly need. And i'm willing to trust Mark's judgement on Rudy Matter and say he's an improvement on Emerton. But the final piece required for us to nail down a top 6 spot next season, and make a decent fist of it for 4th, is a quality holding midfielder to sit in front of the back four and protect them. Is Vogel good enough? He's 31 anyway, we need younger players Like Bellers and Bradley. So the question is, is that man Huddlestone? or is there someone better out there?
Any suggestions guys?

To many of the so called big clubs are looking to put there house in order & Bents fits the bill perfectly.
I said the other day that 15-20 mil as to be the minimum we would look for(forBents).
For me forget Bellamy he just wouldn't be interested & nor should we(he isn't that young anymore)
Now Huddlestone & Bradley excite me. One thing is for certain a big shake-up is expected & I for one am looking forward to the pre season sales.
I think you will be surprised at Vogel,31 is not a bad age so a few years can be expected from him.
Emerton as done a sterling job down that right side for these last couple of seasons but yes a natural RB is a must.

Great result with the odds stacked against us at 1-1 and down to 10 men. Positives, Reid at right back, could be his best position, Zurab, Dunny, Santa and finally Bentley who must be worth £20m, if he goes, and not the paltry £12m Liverpool are reported as prepared to pay (note fees for Carrick, Essien, Torres etc). Big concern Chris Samba - who is this impostor masquerading as the defensive rock that we all hailed pre Christmas.

C`mon you BLUES[/quote] My point is that we should be drawn into a false hope that are gates are improving due to the team or the ticket prices.
I took kids that are not even Rovers fans hoping to turn them.
Luckily it was a better home performance than usual.
Newcastle have 4 sporting clubs in top leagues (Rugby, basketball, ice hockey, Football)
Plus a much better place to live with many things to do.
Blackburn is a dirty hole, we should be selling out because what else is there to do in Blackburn???

Great to see the team play so well-Rovers played better once Samba had gone, although Oughers header gave him very little chance.Reid is a good footballer and was put under very little pressure at right back.Wigan were one of the poorest teams I have seen in recent times at Ewood but Bentley should have been motm there was no-one to touch him in ability and flair. He really is without doubt one of the best players in the Premiership.Beckham comes nowhere near him!

If it wasn't for the club holding it's own in arguably the best league in the world then me personally cannot see what this town as going for it?
I moved back here 5 years ago from a mere 24 miles away & you would think it was another world.
4 year plan & I'm away. The way this town is looked at by the powers that be is nothing short of a disgrace & those that pertain to be the guardians of this town are nothing more than self serving, who achieve nothing for this town unless it's an absolute necessity(ie decaying rotten buildings,St's,roads
,town centre the list is endless.)& any time these guardians come out with the silk tongue speel, let me tell them that [bold]we[/bold]dont believe you. I originate from this town & they that run it disgust me with your fabricated bulls**t of 'things are better'- utter rubbish.
But I will say there are some good good people in this town as I'm sure we all know of them.
Comparing Newcastle to Blackburn I might add is a little unfair considering your qoutes but one thing we can be proud of is our club that lands the knock-out blow to most clubs we come up against.
As many (eg)Newcastle fans as there maybe doesn't make them any better than us or more loyal or dedicated...
Lets just hope that the ambition dont run dry down in the corridor's of Ewood Park or this town will most certainly disappear back into the dark ages-fact!!

Anyway, back to the game......
Is it me or have referees taken over the world?
Mr Dean was an absolute disgrace on Saturday and it's one thing that the Premier League have not got right.
The standard of refereeing decreases with every season. When you fork out for a game you don't want the ref to be centre stage like this guy was on Saturday.
If The Premier Legue is attracting the best players from around the globe then we should also be employing the best referees from every league around the world.
Players, managers and fans will never give respect to incompetent ref's. You never saw Colina get surrounded in his day or you don't see Rugby Union ref's taking any nonsense.
Sort it out! Rant over......
PS: Every town has it's problems. I'd rather live around here where people pass the time of day and are hospitable, in the main [apart from a centre-forward who used to play for The Vulcan in the Sunday League - b*astard].
