Hughes vows to splash the cash

BLACKBURN manager Mark Hughes is planning a summer spending spree after admitting his squad needs freshening up.

The ambitious Rovers chief is ready to open his chequebook and bring in several new faces as part of an end-of-season shake-up.

And Hughes has warned every member of his existing squad that they are all on trial between now and May, as he begins to formulate his plans for the future.

Having snapped up one player already with a view to next season, in the shape of former AC Milan midfielder Johann Vogel, Hughes has promised others will follow as part of a summer revamp.

And the Rovers chief seems confident he will receive the backing he needs at boardroom level to enable him to be competitive in the transfer market.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Premier League clash with Wigan Athletic at Ewood, a bullish Hughes said: "I'm hoping to bring in other players this summer.

"I'm happy with Johann's acquisition and if we can get similar quality players, and players with the same pedigree, then that's got to help us, so I'm quite hopeful.

"I think I'll have the ability this summer to go into the market place and hopefully get some players.

"They're not cheap these days, as we all know, but I think there will be a certain amount that I'll be able to work with, and I think that will be important for us."

In the past, Hughes has resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes to his squad, partly because of financial constraints, and partly because he believed a policy of continuity represented the best way forward.

However, it would appear the Welshman is now planning a change of tack, as he seeks to build on the progress made over the last three years.

"I think it's important that we try to keep on progressing, and you have to do," said Hughes.

"You sometimes have to change personnel and, as I've always said, you have to try to improve the quality of your first 11 or 15 players, and that's where I'll spend the money.

"If I do that, and I spend it well, then we'll improve again next year."

News of Hughes' plans is sure to be well received by the fans, some of whom were disappointed the Rovers chief failed to make a signing in the January window.

"At that point, I didn't think there was any players, or deals, that really appealed to me, because I thought they were over-priced," said Hughes.

"But in the summer, I think the market calms down, and people get a little bit more realistic in their valuations of players, so you can do better business in the summer, and that's when I've tried to do the bigger deals that I've done."

With several new signings set to arrive this summer, that is sure to place a question mark over the futures of some of the existing members of Hughes' squad, with the manager conceding that virtually everyone is playing for their place.

He added: "Whenever you put the shirt on you are playing for your place, you are playing for your future, and for your role in the team and in the squad, so that doesn't change.

"Maybe this time of the year focuses players' minds somewhat, but I'm always evaluating players, I'm always questioning their ability, and their motivation, and that happens on a daily basis.

"We are always setting them tests and keeping the standards high, just to make sure they maintain them.

"If they don't then you look to make changes."

Hey Ossy / Woody - you heard it first last Monday from Morst as usual!! I hope the board / owners will soon announce a Big Summer kitty for Hughes - especially to boost STH sales - But will they? Today big kitty for Sparky announced. History man says it should still be £10m more but you know what he is like!

20 million!! That should get us 10 over the top europeans that no one else wants. That's all Hughes does. Get him off to Newcastle as soon as possible.

Same old...same old!
How many times do we hear this tired story churned out?
It will take more than this for me to renew my season ticket.

I'll be absolutely gob smacked if the Rovers board give Sparky a 10 million transfer kitty. I think Sparky will be too!

In Sparks we trust!

Hey Morst I think Ossy as fainted at the news!!
Conspicous by his absence!!
This is a big step in the right direction & hopefully only the start?
MH is going for a clear out here reading between the lines!!
I dont want to speculate on who is going & staying?
For me this will get me down the 'Bolton Rd' for the renewal......
More $'s are always welcome so lets hope some more are released(prob from sale of others?)
This as been a funny old season. I just think it as caught up with the team & it's lack of depth from previous seasons exertion.
So on we go....
Whats the result tomorrow then ?

Great news to hear, the squad is in desperate need of a shake up.
Hopefully Hughes can bring in some quality, to help us push for europe, but would have been nice if this happened last summer. This season has pretty much been a season wasted.
Hopefully we can get rid of the passengers in the squad (i.e pedersen), and bring in some true premiership quality.

Actions speak louder than words. It's not two minutes since they said they'd lost £3M (including the TV money). So how can they suddenly come up with £10m? I think this is a cynical ploy to get people to renew.

Joe even though I can see your point I very much doubt Rovers are gonna come out with such a statement then revoke that?

That is pure suicide!!
I would say they are good for there word.
Failing that then I think MH would be on his bike & so would I for that matter!!

calucated gamble nby hughes to try and get some more effective performances from the team.
but we are running the risk of pushing up prices if people know how much we have to spend.

still think we could finish 6th more realisticall 8th

does this kitty news mean that bents is on his way?

seems like the boards much vaunted policy of continuity is coming under review.

lets hope benni is first out of the door followed by the axe.

an attacking midfielder is what we need.

personally i think if bently does go this summer then so long as we get a decent price 12-1 mil then id trust hughes to get someone of equal or better ability for the money.

i would much rather have keep hughes and lose bently rather than vice versa

If Rovers have got any sense they'll make thier major purchases before Selling Bents that way we wont look like were a selling club to potential signings plus other clubs wont b looking at the wedge we got for selling our best player.

If we sell Bents for £16m Sparky will get half and half from any other player sales ie Roberts £3m, Emerton £1.5 = £10m

I'm confuscious. I thought Mr Williams said in January that the reason we didn't sign anyone was cos we had no money. Now Mr Hughes says its cos he couldn't find anybody worthwhile. Suddenly we've got a big 'war chest' for the summer! A cynic might say that, after a season of dull football, ST renewals aren't going too well. As for tomorrow, i hope we match Wigan's effort cos they're gonna be bang up for it. If we don't we'll lose. After travelling to West ham last week i feel i'm owed a performance!!!!!

Still a bunch of miserables even when there is supposed good news! Sometimes I don't get Rovers fans... I've been a Rovers fan for life, yes I get irritated when we under perform but come on people give them some credit.

£10million is a press figure, to be honest they probably just made it up to spark some kind of controversy when it turns out to be more like 5. Ignore the press... listen to what comes straight out of Ewood. Hughes has said he will have some money... and I think he'll use it wisely as usual.

As for Bentley, Tugay, Emerton and Zurab being sold... are you high on some kind of cocktail of drugs?! If Tugay went we would get £200,000 maximum, so he's worth more to the team than that... we wouldn't sell him. Emerton is our only right back, so he isn't going anywhere... even if we get another right back he is likely to stay as back-up/competition for places. Bentley has 3 years on his contract, so even if he begs to leave we aint gonna let him go for at least another year and a half... by which time he should be worth a bit more if he keeps improving.

The only possible mover out of them is Zurab, but I don't think what we would get for him would make it worthwhile. Gally should go, he's not adding anything to the team and is doubtful to any time in the future... but even if he goes we'll only get £1million maximum. Our best bet for money is to sell Roberts... but that would be a mistake without somebody else lined up to come in... somebody who could give McCarthy a kick up the backside.
Posted by: Gareth, London on 8:05am Sat 22 Mar 08
Some of you are mentally ill. We need squad players who do a job, Emerton and Zurab certainly do a job, we would have to spend millions to improve on them to get in the top 4. Benni needs to move on, I think his attitude is a bad influence, none existant workrate and I'm sure he's been in Bents ear about the Champions League! I would never sell Bentley, after Joe Cole he is the most technically gifted english player in the Prem. I'd say a poor mans Zidane.

Blackburn Rovers take Matter fancy

21:05 21/03/2008

Blackburn Rovers Football Club have taken a fancy to Rudy Matter.

According to reports, Mark Hughes will make a move for the Valenciennes defender when the transfer window reopens in the summer as he looks to further bolster his Ewood Park squad.

"I am hoping to bring in other players," Hughes told the Daily Mirror. "I will have money this year to go into the market place and get some players. They are not cheap, but there will be an amount I can work with.

“That will help us. It's important that we keep progressing. You have to sometimes change personnel and improve the quality of the first XI and that's where I will spend the money."

Matter is out of contract at the end of next season, and Rovers would hope to land him for around £2million.

That's right-back sorted then :D

Its has been stated in recent fish and chip wrapping that Hughes will have 10m to spend in the summer.
This cash is apparently funds back payed from the Walker Trustees.
The thought behind it being you must spend on the team to try and sell the club.
The worry is with a 3.5m a loss a year, majority of which is due to a large wage bill how on earth can we bring even more players in?
We can definately not match players wage bills from most Prem clubs.
We will definatley sell but i dont think that we will make a huge difference because we have good quallity already in, we should not fill the jug to high or we will spill the milk!!

jamie read what i wrote

the club say they are giving sparky 10million

selling roberts, gally we could get around 5 million for the pair.. (i said 1 or 2 million for gally)

now here is the math 10 + 5 = 15 million ..

did not think about selling mokoena, thats a good call, i for once agree with you..

however derbs wont be sold or benni or brett

which clown is saying sell tugay?? i need to point out we cant sell him... he is out of contact come end of the season! !! so can leave on a free...

Posted by: Jon, 769-566 on 1:14pm Sat 22 Mar 08
With regards to the loss we are making every year. This is largely due to the lack of support the team gets when at home. We have one of the most dissappointing average attendances in the prem. Where are all the people who managed to fill the ground most games during the season 94-95?? Of course i realise we havent got the team we had then nor the success, but surely success shouldnt be the only thing drawing fans to the ground. I feel if some more fans made more of an effort to get down to ewood on match day this would help bring out the best of the quality players we have. If we wait for success to get us to go to ewood surely that makes us no better than the average glory chasing man.utd fan. If our attendance was better we would make more money as a club thus not losing so mach money due to wages or woteva the reason. And to see sum people may not renew their season ticket and may go down the road to bolton, what are you saying. if you mean it then maybe you should jog on down the road to bolton. i cant believe someone would say thart. why dont you go n get a season ticket for whoever wins the league this season!

nope not fainted woody yesterday was good friday so out on the 'lash' if you look back to the post 'hughes excited by vogel signing' i always thought there was a 'kitty' and i thought it would be about £10M, we arnt going to get wholesale changes with that.
guys to go gally hench enkleman tugs (sadly) and probably the axe, we wont get much for the lot of them but it means they are off the wage bill. there are others who could go but it may be up to whether the player wants to stay rather than the manager wants to let them go, theres quite a few in that catergory.
any win will do today.

if Tugay goes it will be on a free.. as he will be out of contact,
he is currently on a pay as you play contact, which i am sure he will be offered for next season also.

players i think could go..
roberts,
encklemen (think thats how you spell it)
the axe
gally
henchoz (not on spelling form today)
berner

dont think we will get a massive fee for most of them but i think atleast 3 of the above 6 will go..

I said Tugay would be amongst the players leaving for sure it would be crazy to pay his wages when he's too old to play.

The club havent said that they'll give Mark £10m this is just a figure banded about. Even if ive missed it (them saying it) they'll be reffering to after the sale of Bents to fund the new signings.

Im afraid Bents is a luxury we simply cant afford at thre moment. for £16m id let him go in a second, especially when you consider we paid less than £1m for him and paid him only £30k per week for the for the first 18 months.

Sparky has questioned Brett's and Zurabs commitment to progressing as players of late and will almost definatly will release both. I fear that Robberts will go if we sign another striker in the summer (possible Bellamy bid £6m). West Ham are lining up a bid for Martins from Newcastle and James Vaughan from Everton which will see at least one (probably 2) Wham strikers being released.

Bellamy + Koumas will be our domestic targets.

It will take £10m to bring them both in. We might get 1 but prob not the other then we'll spend a little bit more on foreign players = £10m

If Im a fringe player on a pay as you play contract how would I be able to be satisfyed with sitting next to a kid whose a fringe player as well whose lower down the pecking order than me but is getting paid a wage, ie Sergio Peter.

Sell David Bentley???
Are you all mad??
If we are going to look to sell quality players for the sake of bringing in players we are never going to progress as a team. We have an ok squad at the moment but what we need to do is take what we've got and build on it! Not ship out qaulity in order to ship in quality. Bentley is our most promosing talent with age on his side, if we can keep him happy we have got years of quality footie to come from him. We need to bring in more players like this to STRENGHTEN the side. not 1 in 1 out basis. surely if we do this we will remain at the level we are at now. We definately are a selling team based on the past few years. we find a good player have 1 maybe 2 seasons out of him n then get rid of him, thus why ever since winning the league, at best we have been a mid table - top 6 at a push. how can we ever progress past this if we keep selling our best players, i know some situations are down to the player but if you look at some of the names we have had and lost over the years - Shearer, Sherwood, bellamy, lucas neill to name just a few. I think any1 who even thinks about selling bentley are crazy. Why cut your nose off to spite your face. Bentley is 1 of the few players we have at the moment who go on the pitch and looks like he cares whether we win the game or not, him with santa cruz, friedel and a couple of others. Am i the only 1 who thinks selling bentley is a crazy idea?? i sincerely hope not, especially Sparky!!!

as for your comment about them not existing as clubs deem that they create a conflict of interest etc what a load of rubbish were did you get that? how are they un-ethical?

when Jansens contract ran out he was given a 12 month contact on pay as you play terms.

also jamie.. you made the above post at 13.54 just over an hour before kick off. how if your a season ticket holder? wrexham is over an hours drive away

nevermind yesterdays performance david bentley has been our most consistent performer (and talented)all season so how anybody says he should be sold for the sake of the team needs thier head seeing to. they only way bents is leaving rovers is if his 'ambition' makes him go. the only way we will compete with the 'big boys' is having players like bents in the side.
