BENNI McCarthy has indicated he is ready to spend the rest of his career at Blackburn Rovers.
The former Porto star, who is Rovers' second top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions, has hinted he is willing to sign a new contract with the club.
Several rounds of talks have already taken place between Rovers chairman John Williams and McCarthy's advisers, and, with the striker saying he can see himself playing under manager Mark Hughes for the rest of his career, there is a strong chance a deal could be thrashed out between the two parties in the next couple of weeks.
McCarthy, who was in Blackburn town centre yesterday to help launch the club's new season ticket promotion, said: "I can definitely see myself playing under Mark Hughes until I finish my career.
"I've been fortunate to play for two managers who are very similar in terms of being laid-back and easy going, and they are able to get the best out of you.
"One of those was Jose Mourinho, and Mark Hughes is very similar.
advertisement
"He's young and full of energy, and he wants to achieve a lot of things.
"For a player like me, it's great to be playing for a manager who is so optimistic about wanting to achieve things, and wanting to win things.
"You just want to be part of all that, and I can see myself easily playing for a manager like that for the rest of my career."
McCarthy still has two years left to run on his existing deal after this season, but Hughes is eager to secure the South African's services beyond 2010, believing the 30-year-old still has plenty to offer.
The Rovers chief said: "I really feel he wants to stay here.
"He's under contract but we want to make Blackburn Benni's club.
"It could be the last big contract of his career, you could never say. But we'd love for him to stay here for a long time.
"Technically, and in terms of manoeuvring the ball, he's as good as there is and if we can get him in the right areas then he can produce."
McCarthy has scored an impressive 35 goals in 81 appearances for Rovers since he joined the club from Porto in a £2.5 million deal at the beginning of last season.
At one point last summer, he did admit his head was turned by speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea but, once that opportunity disappeared, he has since knuckled down again and now appears focused on the job of firing Rovers back into Europe.
He said: "The club has been nothing but generous to me.
"They've given me an opportunity that not many other clubs would have given me in the Premiership and I feel I'm repaying them.
"In all fairness, the only way you can repay them is by pledging your future.
"I think my shot at playing in the Champions League has gone if I don't make it with Blackburn.
"If we can't do it then there's probably only four teams where you are guaranteed an easier run of playing Champions League football.
"Either you go to United, you go to Chelsea, or Arsenal, or Liverpool. If you go to any of the other clubs then your chances are limited.
"Blackburn are right up there with the rest (outside the big four)."

Nice - sure he's hit some bad form recently but its surely a blip and he'll come good in time again soon, this is pleasing to hear, and we know the majority of fans love him! BENNI MCCARTHY!
Now lets get Santa, Warnock & Bentley secured then we're sorted.

this is great news! and i'm quite confident everyone we'll sign new contracts. It's better to be a star for Rovers and push for european cup, than to be a benchwarmer for the top four.

Get him out of our club. The guy is a complete joke and has limited ability. My ticket money goes towards paying him and i want him out. lets get somebody else in like Emille Heskey or Henri Camara

just like many of us reading this will automatically think back to 'i've heard this all before' and in 'fairness' (seems to be the in word at the moment with Hughesy) Banni doe's seem to say what he thinks which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you view it - Benni has improved lately albeit still along way to make up for his attitude, lack of form and comments, however the Blackburn fans do chant his name and do give him the backing which is always postive for the player and that should extend to MGP - it's clear these players won't be going anywhere unless they get kicked out, so as ossy rover states, in fairness KEEP THE FAITH!!

He lost my respect when he wanted out to chelsea, he's looked lathargic and lazy for large parts of this season. I say sell him for 7M this summer and trust Mark to find someone younger and hungrier, like Santa Cruz, but with more pace, a foreign Bellamy. I'm sure Mark could find one for 4M which would leave us with another 3M to spend.

I honestly believe he gets a bit of stick as he is black. There are quite a few of our fans that make a few disgusting comments when i am at the games and it turns my stomach. just think back to the Dwight Yorke incident. Some of our fans are vile and need sorting out. For what it is worth i would keep BM as he is a class player

For me this is great news that someone of BM's class & quality looks like he will be staying.
Of course he hasn't been up to his standards that we know he is capable of reaching but he looks like he his coming into the form we know he can produce.
There are many many counter arguments to why he his staying but I feel we will get a good few years out of BM & from his talk sounds like he wants to give it a good go here at Blackburn.
I applaud this move by Rovers & with a few more additions come pre season I feel we will be in with a good shout for euro footy next season.

Heskey has played well when fit this season and the end of last, but he isn't and never has been a goalscorer. Santa Cruz does the job that Heskey would do for us now but bags more goals to boot!
As for Henri Camara, has he been better than average for any premiership side? I don't think so. I think Benni's performance this season so far would be above that of Cammara's for every season he's been here. Has he ever scored more than 11 goals by March? I'd seriously doubt it.
Yes he can be frustrating but we couldn't get a better forward around on our budget. On his day he's a class act.

I'm not entirely sure of your definition of "limited ability"!

The man who gets paid to make the decisions thinks he's worth a new contract, so thats good enough for me. if hughsie had any doubts his commitment or abilities he would have been shown the door.
lets also not forget 2nd season syndrome, benni performed wonders last season and he set himself high targets which he has struggled to live up to, but as i've said many times class is permanent, form is temporary.
as i said in the introduction if the hughsie thinks he's worth it then it can only be good that they get him to sign a longer deal.
KEEP THE FAITH

I think we should sign Benni up to a contract extension and then sell him in the summer - we'll get more money for him if he's got longer to go on his contract.
I thought he was overrated last year, but he's been utterly abysmal this year. If you take out the penalties (none of which he's won) and taps in's from rebounds, he's scored few this year.
Killer stat for me though, number of assists last year: 1, number this year: 1. The man is sporadically lazy, greedy, and a defensive liability.
Also stats don't lie: He's in the worst team of the year on Uerosport based on Opta stats.

doe's anyone actually beleive we would get £7 million for 30 y/o McCarthy, this season's major dissapointment...IF any of the bigger clubs had come in for him at the end of last season, then fair enough, we would have got 7 mil for him, this season he would be worth half of that, so I think along with many of the GENUINE posts on here that keeping him and getting him back to the way he was last season is far more profitable than getting rid!!

Not many strikers have scored more goals than him this season and if you were comparing to last season then whatever he achieved was bound to be some sort of a disappointment. Lets not forget that he was scarily good last term and we haven't had anyone come close since Big Al back when we were winning the league. All you people who are saying SELL SELL SELL, who would you get to replace him that would be anywhere near as good?
I love Parky's comment 'If you take out the penalties (none of which he's won) and taps in's from rebounds, he's scored few this year'
And how many goals would Gary Lineker have scored if you take away the tap ins, rebounds and penalties? hahaha and he's one of the best strikers this country has ever produced!

we go years with loads of strikers that don't score any goals, then one comes along who is capable of scoring 20 and the 'glass half empty' brigade all moan! Rather have benni than davies/dahlin/yorke/ gallagher/fenton etc wouldn't you! Benni is class, he has his faults, but that's what you get when you have a limited budget - in fact, NO, he's miles better than most players you get for a limited budget, and so are most of the Rovers squad. Enjoy it boys, its a great time to be a Rovers fan!

I like Benni but I think you can find yourself a bit limited with what you can do with him. Without doubt his effectiveness is magnified the closer to goal you get. The deeper he plays the worse it is tho. I like Roberts and given a decent run in the team would become more rounded.
Personally I think Bellamy has been poor for Wham this season and they might be looking to offload him, Im thinkin for £3-4m he's worth a punt, possibly at the expense of Matty D.

[italic]italic[/italic] [bold]bold[/bold] I think this is fantastic for the club. Blackburn are critisised for there lack of quality; but if we are able to sign players like Mccarthy and santa cruz then we can be as big as we was in 94-94.
I think if Benni signs on for a long term deal this will attract bigger and better players form accross the world.
I agree with Benni we are the best outside the big four and we will break into it again one day.

jamie from Wrexham you are a complete plum. bellamy has been injured and is still injured and that is the only reason is is not playing for the hammers this season. We will not sell him and as we paid 8 million for him you wouldnt get near him for 4 million and as that is your entire budget for next season gone just forget about it. We dont need your few pennies that you can scrape together.

Bellamy has been injured for 75% of the season and even then his stats are very good, in fact better than any of our strikers. He has started 8 games for the hammers this season and scored 4 goals. Marginally better than Rocky's 15 goals in 31 starts.
And then to top it all off you suggest selling Derbyshire. Nice one...

Jamie's analysis of Benni is good - the mixed comments on here tell us perhaps we should expect more if he wants to go from 30k a week to 40k a week. I mean he will be on the same as Grabbie then!! But Jamie as good as Bellamy was when fit I would not sell MD as he looks like he could be the man for the next 5 years at Ewood if given a run and who knows England with finishes like at Newcastle where he showed a certain M Owen how to do it!

Jamie, i like your analysis of situations and your true commitment to Rovers, I also love your name 'Jamie Wrexham :)' but please stop going on about Bellamy comming back here, it's history (as the man above will tell ya) and please refrain from foolish comments of swapping a perfectly fit, keen, England U21 international, for someone taking over Darren Anderton's past tag of 'sick-note' - it's over Jamie, love to you!

Pop & History man, as you both are local proper fans I cant realy criticize you. But I do dis-agree. Personaly if Benni looses another yard of pace by next season, even for an out-and-out striker he wont see much of the ball. Matty D is only effective in fits and starts and if he doesnt develop he'll only ever be a super sub.
I dont know who our targets will be in the summer but if Craig is one i think you'll know i'll be happy. He gets some sick from some people but he's got alot of time for the fans.
I take some stick on this site, its hard to take from real local fans because I respect your opinion. However if your a southern fairy then jog on. Wheres your season tickets???
We'll see!!!

I guess u all will be wanting Bentley, Santa Cruz or Friedel out if they have a bad season next year, will you?

Bellamy - Liverpool/Celtic/Wes
tham
Paul Gallagher - Stoke/Preston
McCarthy - Chelsea/Liverpool
Kevin Gallagher - Newcastle
(notice how the clubs who wanted our players are big clubs (part from Stoke)!! Now who wants your has beens?)
Now the difference here is that all here are internationals apart from Jansen (even though he did get a call up before his accident). Now you have a has been in Mr Cole, Gray and Blake would not get a sniff in the Premiership, only decent striker you have is Lafferty, who is setting the Championship on fire!!! BUT so did a certain Mr Nugent, and look whats happened to him in the BIG league.
The sooner Lafferty see's sense and realises he is not going to fullfil his potential at Burnley and signs for a better club than yours (Wont be hard) the better!

strange old world isnt it, when a certain local team gets a decent result we get lods of posts on here from thier supporters (as soon as the ref has blown his whistle in some instances) extolling the virtues of that club and ridiculing ours. why is it they are all quiet today i wonder, ive looked on the various post subjects and not seen any as yet, and its over 12 hours since thier last match.
before anybody says anything i know its gone 11:00am and the lazy blighters are probably still in thier pits but theyve usualy got a comment or two, by now.

Without trying to get into an argument, which a lot of you seem to be doing, I think keeping hold of our best players is key to success and, although he hasn't had the best of seasons, Benni is still one of our best players.

i dont think people r bein fair. yes he has been off form recently but the match against Bolton he looked excellent again. i think he is the key to our success as he has the experience that we need. i look forward to seeing him play more often

Oh and we mustn\'t forget \"5-0 and you can\'t go home, 5-0 and you can\'t go home\". Damian Duff played that day and we got £17m for him off Chelsea. How\'s your never-ending, season-in season-out nudge at promotion going?[/quote] Andy Cole, former premiership player [even WE didn't have him at his best], Kyle Lafferty boundless top div experience, Andy Gray ref to the former Robbie Blake, oh yes he set the Prem on fire. Oh and last but not least Mr Hyde. Give me his goal record again. Like I said forward i.e. striker, GOALSCORER. Is that your best then? I rest my case.lol lol lol

Ooh look... A dingle!!! All wave at the dingle! Be very quiet though, they're not very brave and have been known to soil themselves when they get nervous!
Name me the last CLASS forward you ever had. Do remember i\'m only 42!

dont forget Keith Fear wasnt really a class forward, but he did score in the cup final for southampton, but more importantly he got a hat trick on the turf when we won 4-0, i think that gives him a bit of folklore status.
Keep the faith

Keep the faith[/quote] Hi Ossy, Nearly right!!
Keith Fear was signed on Xmas Eve and made debut at Turf on Boxing Day 1977. We won 3-2 (Murdered em but they got 2nd in 95th min) and he missed a penalty. He only scored two goals in 5 games for Rovers and one was in this game - not a hat-trick. This game was memorable for 15,000 Rovers fans invading and taking over the Turf. I went through the away gate on the longside at 1.30 pm for 3pm KO and the police shouted shut it now it's already over capacity. You can imagine where the other 10,000 Rovers fans had to end up. We scored early and the ground erupted everywhere - cue mass brawls!! Still Clarets highest gate in 30 years.

We need to keep hold of the likes of Benni if we are to have any hope of continuing to challenge the top 6.
Yes, Benni's had a hard season, but he's still reached double figures in goals (the last time I checked, Pens and tap-ins were worth just as much as 30-yard screamers). It's also worth noting that Benni has had to survive on practically half the supply than he got last season, with MGP struggling for form this year.
As for the guy who suggested Bellamy could return - the reason he didn't come back last summer apparently was because Friedel and Nelsen told Hughes they didn't want him back, becasue he apparently used to 'bully' MGP.
I'm glad to hear Benni come out and say he wants to stay with Rovers - sign him up!
