Dunn to cost £2m

BLACKBURN Rovers may have to play a game of patience in their pursuit of David Dunn because Birmingham City have slapped a £2 million price tag on the midfielder's head.

Blues boss Steve Bruce is eager to recoup as much of the £5.5 million transfer fee he paid Rovers for Dunn three and a half years ago, but unless he significantly lowers his demands then an Ewood return in January for the 27-year-old could be in jeopardy.

Rovers thought they might be able to nick Dunn for less than half of what Birmingham are believed to be demanding, based on the player's recent injury record and the fact that he's out of contract in the summer.

However, Bruce is digging his heels in and he's determined not to sell the player back to Rovers on the cheap because of the bad blood that exists between the two clubs.

Birmingham still bear a grudge over the way the whole Robbie Savage saga was played out two years ago, and they would much prefer to sell Dunn to another club, rather than back to Rovers for less than half of the fee they paid for him.

But with Manchester City thought to be the only other club in for Dunn, the Blues may eventually have to swallow their pride and try and get what they can for the player in the January window, otherwise they run the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Rovers are therefore prepared to play a waiting game, knowing that Birmingham are more likely to cut their losses the later it gets in the window.

The Blues have already admitted that a return to the North West for Dunn, where he can be nearer to his family, may be in the best interests of all parties.

However, Bruce is trying to play hard ball in a last-ditch attempt to save face.

Birmingham have a 2 year option on Dunn's contract - so if they exercise that option he has another 2 and a half years at Birmingham. Dunn is probably the best player in the Championship but will only play 15 games a season. What Birmigham have to weigh up - is if Dunn can get Birmingham to the Premiership they will earn a load of TV money etc - so if i was Bruce I would keep him - exercise hos two year option, then offer him to Blackburn in the summer for 1 mill.

I agree - the guy who wrote this story is ignorant of the facts. Dunn could get Birmingham promoted on his own - so why are they going to let him go for nothing now when he has 2.5 years on his contact. Dunn has said he wants to move home and Bruce is frustrated that Dunn is always injured - if Blackburn want him we should pay a bargin 2 million for him!

dunn has been riddeled with injuries since he went to birmingham, therefore its not justified for fat boy bruce to ask 2mil, the only reason he is asking for this is beacuse he is still sour the robbie savage saw what was happening to birmingham and decided to join a bigger, better and more successful club and the fact he spent £5mil on dunn in the first place, its time to swallow your pride fatboy and finnaly do smoething good for your team

Lets give up on the Savage thing - we all know if Chelsea or Man Utd came in for Savage he would treat us the same as he treated Bruce - afterall London is Closer to North Wales than Blackburn in his eyes. Savage is a money grabing ****** and I for one dont think he was worth the hassel he caused.

Fair play to both Hughes and (reluctantly I have to say) Bruce. Both Rovers and Birmingham are in a similar position with their respective players (Neill & Dunn) and are digging their heels in waiting for a deal that best suits them and their club. It's good to see and a far cry from the Hodgson and Kidd era where we'd pay over the odds for players and let our own leave on their own terms - I hope this trend can spread throughout the leagues and we can see the clubs become more influential than players and their agents.
I expect Dunn to come in and Lucas to leave right at the end of the window - and both have my blessing. Neill is one of the Rovers' rarities that has actually shown long term commitment to the point that he has seen out numerous contracts since his arrival at Ewood. Added to that the guy has played in every single position in defence this season and not complained about it once! This rare show of loyalty has proven rather difficult for a few heckling numpties in the Blackburn End to comprehend. Well it hasn't gone unnoticed to the likes of me and I wish him well wherever his career takes him.

All I know is I got really bored of the month or Robbie Savage being in the press every day with the will ho sign or wont he sign story (I agree 3 million for Savage - we were Dunn) - I just dont want every day of the Jan transfer window talking about David Dunn!!!!

What am I missing here? If Dunn is injured more often than not, why would anyone pay 2 million?

Let's be serious, Andy Neild isn't ignorant to any "facts" in this transfer.
Birmingham aren't going to exercise a clause to pay Dunny 30k plus a week for a further two years when he's played 53 games are they? Added to the fact that Dunn is currently fit and not being played due to preventing a possible injury that will scupper a deal in January - and add to that rumours of a fall out with Bruce I think there's more chance of the Queen having Grabbi's love child.

Richard Morgan, says...
2:04pm Thu 4 Jan 07

I agree £2mill is toppy for Dunn - but the point I was making is the guy who wrote this story is wrong. We cant make Birmingham Sell because he is out of contract in the summer. He has another 2 years on his contract - and the original point i made is Dunn may only play 10 more games for Birmingham, but if he creates 10 goals and gets them promotion then they will earm £10 or £20 million in TV rights - sponsership etc etc. All I am trying to do is look at it from Birminghams point of view. I dont think it a personal battle between Bruce and Blackburn, Bruce has already said he can leave if the right offer comes in. All I am saying is Andy Neild is wrong to say we can push them into a corner and turn it into another Robbie Savage war between the two clubs. I think Bruce would be happy to let him go for 2 million - if not he is happy to keep him until the end of the season rather than let him go for nothing as he could make the difference in getting them up and earning all that extra money.

Maybe I should stop trying to look at thing form their point of view.

Hi Guys - Birmingham fan here in peace. Saw the story on www.newsnow.co.uk

Really nice to see a decent footie debate - hope i dont spoil it by saying I am a Blues fan.

In Short I agree with Richard Morgan - from our point of view if you bid 1.5 mill or 2 mill pounds he is yours - and your getting a great player for next to nothing for 2 million. Still think Dunn would walk into the England team if he had a run of 50 games. But if your not willing to pay that price - then we may as well keep him because if he can get up goals and wins in the few games he does play - and we go up - then we get an extra 25 million pounds and Dunn can go for free.

I think Bruce wants a fresh start - I think Dunn and Forsell remind him of the dark days of last season of having all the talent in the world but never playing.

The warning I will give to you guys - if you dont buy him this window - and he plays in every game from now till the end of the season, I think 5 or 10 clubs would be in for him and willing to pay a lot more than 2 million.

But I would not give you odds on him playing every game before you ask!

Macca, says...
2:19pm Thu 4 Jan 07

At risk of wading unwanted into your interesting debate, I think you both make good points. However, as I see it, Birmingham want rid of Dunn and want as much as poss for him. We want Dunn back and want to get him on the cheap. This smacks of the 'Barry Ferguson' debacle when Rangers made £2m. The only issues are 'when' and 'how much' which is just a matter for negotiation. If we spend even the initial £2m required, we've still made £4m in capital plus interest, and the same again in wages, by having sold and repurchased, while qualifying for Europe and reaching the semis of the cup. Not bad business. So £2m is looking cheap. Any less and we're well in the money. We will obviously have him back, but Birmingham are just trying their luck. Dunn would refuse a deal to Man City for obvious reasons, and their 'option' is worthless since no club, especially one managed by the astute Steve Bruce, would have a player who wants to leave. I look forward to getting Dunn back. A few of Sparkey's legendary Ice Baths and he'll be right as rain and him and Tugay can interchange next season in the playmaker role - we could surely get a full season of games between the pair of them!

Stuart, says...
2:23pm Thu 4 Jan 07

As a bluenose its refreshing to see some honest contructive points made by Rovers fans. £2mil is a fair price for a quality player of the Dunn mold even considering in truth he will never play more than 5 games in a row before another injury strikes!

Pete, says...
2:33pm Thu 4 Jan 07

I can see nothing other than a last minute £1million move or a player exchange for him. Let's not talk about 2.5 years left because that just won't happen - he will be a free agent in the summer for certain.

We offered a last gasp £2million for him in the summer which was at the time rebuffed but due to his injuries since that bid I'm sure Birmingham regret that - but that's hindsight.
I just hope we don't do something stupid like swap him for Gallacher because I think Gally would be an excellent player given a run in the team - it seems as though Hughes doesn't rate him as high though. Maybe a six month loan of Gally could be a compromise, To make the deal more attractive to Brum in their promotion push?

Bazzathebluenose, says...
2:44pm Thu 4 Jan 07

Another Birmingham fan in peace. I have always stated on our blog that David Dunn is our best player by far and is a class above anything in the League we find ourselves in. We don't, I believe, necessarily want rid of him but he hardly ever seems to play due to injury and he is worried about his small daughter in the North West. Any of us that are fathers fully understand this latter sentiment and my view is we will never get the best out of David even if he did get a run of games and form together in these circumstances. However, whoever bids for this talented player must realise that Blues are not going to give him away especially if they don't have to. 2 million is a bargain in my view regardless of all the other baggage. I would still be very sad to see him go and I hope he doesn't.

Euan Stewart, says...
3:13pm Thu 4 Jan 07

I think Pete hit the nail on the head "the facts speak for themselves". If Brum really wanted to keep, even if only until the summer, then he´d be in the team now. The fact that Dunn has stated that he wants out says it all, and Brum obviously recognise that. Just like Rovers are playing the bluff game with Neill, Brum will sell Dunn this month too. Rovers may compromise on the price on some sort of pay per play arrangement. That is the merry-go-round.

david dunn 2mil waste of money if he was free it would be a good buy but for a club with the lack of money like blackburn it is to much money we must bring in someone that can play 40 game per season not an 10/15 came dunny has played in the past 5 seasons give some one like devita his chance like dunn got his.

Dunn wants to come back to us for his family in the North West? That journey of hour and a half max must be a killer! Sorry for the sarcasm. Not bothered on bringing him back, nowadays spends far too much time injured. He became to much of a 'Billy Big Time' before he went aswell. I really do think he'd need to prove himself on his return. Maybe we could pay him on a games played basis?

colzi, says...
9:01pm Thu 4 Jan 07

First of all - Sparky is aware of the injury situation, as is Bruce. (hence the 2m tag.) So why are people keep mentioning is injury- Dunn WILL have a medical- if he fails no move. If he sails through deal-Rovers player!

If Dunn never got injured for Birmingham - he'd be playing for Chelsea on 100k - the kid was/is class. People laugh when i say Dunn would still be an England regular if he never got injured. When Dunny is on top form he's one of the best around- even better than Lampard in my opinion.

Sparky , Is testing the water if Bruce says/said NO then well wait until summer and then try again. Way i see it is Sparky would like him back, but feels not NEEDED back /ASAP. Personaly, id love to see Dunn back home-and he will one day, just when is the question!

If i was Birmingham /Steve Bruce- If he is fit as of now- id sort out a deal for him to join Rovers at the end of season, play him every game he is fit! As with his ability and Birminghams current form/position as it stands in the Championship- id say u would be playin in the Prem for sure.
Its a gamble but id say a very good one!

Dunns heart is in Blackburn - u wont ever change that.

All the best to Birmingham for 07 !

I agree 100% with colzi.

Dunn is class and would be playing for Chelsea and england if he was 100% fit over the last come of years.

We need him back. I would love to see some local passion back in the side.

Someone who loves the club as much as the fans.

Lets just pay the 2mill and get him in before manchester city or some other team nicks him.....

Because that would be unbearable

PaulK, says...

If his heart was in the move, Man City couldn't "nick" him. He'd hold out for the move to us.

And if he was such a world beater, why - when he was in good form and injury free, when he left Blackburn did one of the big clubs not come in for him then? Not one of them - not Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal or Liverpool. He got bought by Birmingham - not even a top 15 club. A step up from Rovers? No way!

I think you are in dream land believing he's such a star. Again - why is no big club willing to take a punt of him. £2m to most of them is peanuts. A world star? A England regular? I'd eat my hat if either of those expectations ever arise!!!

Why the **** would Birmingham want to extend Dunn's contract by 2 years (must be one of their top earners), when he's played only 30 odd games in 3 years?

Dunn is definately going to end up at Rovers, Bruce will definately sell eventually in Jan, as will Hughes with Neill

Well before his move to Birmingham - thier was no doubt, top clubs were looking at him- he was class. ( hence his call up for England)

However 5m was alot of money, and Dunn was just coming through so to speak. If Dunn played 1 year later injury free for Rovers then the top clubs would of came calling.

Why not now ?

Well personaly if i was at Utd or Chelsea id take a gamble why not ? However its basically like this Jose, Wenger, Benitez, have never seen the kid play!

Im not bothered if Dunn never gets a call up England - just want him home!

He wont let Blackburn down- Like a person said above its like a fan playing for us only this fan has got great ability.

I´m sure some of these postings are Brum in disguise. What true Rover would not want DD back at Ewood? Dunn is Rovers through and through and that´s what we need. The question of Dunn´s fitness would be an issue for any potential suitor, and sparky is too astute a manager not to have that written into any potential deal.

Dunn isn't worth more than £750,000 at the moment. I'm not saying he can't be more valuable with a season of good form, but £2m for Dunn in his condition and form and Championship experience is a mad gamble!
We've made money on him, so why throw it back at Birmingham.
I'm not saying he wouldn't be great back at Blackburn under Mark Hughes but not at £2m. Too expensive by a mile.

Just a thought - seeing as he's fit to play but not in the team I wonder if there is a clause in the sale where Birmingham would have to pay Rovers another installment if he reached a certain amount of games? I also wouldn't be surprised if we have a sell on clause included!

I trust Hughes to do the right thing concerning Dunn. Unlike previous managers he has never
been quick to blow the clubs money. Maybe Savage was a slight exception but he seems to have come good this season. Personally, i don't think we can afford £2m for someone that never plays. With our current form & with Reid back soon, can we not afford to wait until July? If Birmingham do have the option of 2 more years, surely the player has to agree to this when the time comes?

Again I agree with colz in reply to PaulK comment. 5mill was alot of money and don't forgot Birmingham where viewed a very progessive club, with good support and alot of money then.

I meet Dunn in a club in Leeds and asked him why he left rovers. He told me that he'd never wanted to leave and it kill him but in his words "Souness was a WA%^EK" and he forced him out

This lad is a fan, a talent and the creative midfielder we need.

It's a no brainer - buy him. All businesses need to take risks and even if he breaks down again and is out for months.
Is 2 mill a bigger risk than

£8 mill for cole
£7.5 Grabbi
£1.5 Amoruso

and all the other millions wasted by Hodgson, Kidd or Souness.

We made 2.5 mill on Kuqi. Lets just get him in. The crowd need to see exciting attacking players, I bet with him back and the football we are playing at the moment it might just get a few more bums on seats down at ewood

can't agree more with ya haggis,
mr. williams should look at the hind side..if we pay say 1.5m quids..tat will be a bargain considering..wat he wil bring with him,
his love & passion for blackburn..tat will energise the whole squad& ofcourse his massive talent& creativity.
+& the most important one..he wil attract more fans to the stadium..thus even if we pay 500k extra we will be getting 5000 odd fans extra every game for him..thus the deal should be concluded by this january..& with all respect to reidy..dunny is a much better player than him& would easily walk into the first team.

£5m was a lot of money for this world class player? You are having a laugh! The big boys didn't buy him because he wasn't good enough. No one else apart from us and City are going for him - for what reason is this?!! Because he's an average player who, on his day, can compete.

And more 'bums on seats' for the return of the 'messiah'?! Now you are kidding! The Julian comment of 5,000 more fans to see him back? Absolute rubbish. No way will we pull in that many seats for him. If we'd see a true quality ex-Rover return such as Duff, maybe. Dunn? Not in my lifetime.

And to anyone commenting of the Brum boys commenting in disguise - I can assure you I am a Blackburn fan. Just can't believe the over hype for Dunn to return. Yes, it is great to have a Blackburn boy return, but he's not fit to lace the boots of Tugay who is 36.

The reason none of the big clubs went for him then, is the same reason they wont go for him now. He would not be a first choice (or squad player?) for any of the top 4 - or perhaps beyond that.

He was injury free for a long period before he left Rovers. The big clubs could have easily outbidded Brum IF they had wanted to. They didn't.

I am not trying to have a dig at anyone but did anyone actually see this lad play world class football for us?

I agree at under a £1m it would be worth a go. There's little better value. But he's no 'God'. We've not seen many of those in recent years.

A critic just because I refuse to be blinded by Dunn's skills? It's called healthy debate.

You bring up a good point and proves my point. Duff left for £17m to (in many ways) the biggest team in England at the moment. Dunn left to a club on the same level (at best) as we were at that time - not one of the big clubs. I am purely trying to point out that Dunn will not be a world beater. A decent addition to the squad nowadays - and if a first time player, purely a pointer to the weakness of our team. He won't make the first 11 once Reid is up and running. A player classes above Dunn.

And an earlier comment suggested £2m and he may be out for a few months is worth a risk. I don't think £2m spent on a gamble is worth it. £2m build on £xs per match played fine. We'd at least be get value for money. We haven't got money to burn nowadays. More the shame!

I remember the excitement and expectation every time Dunn used to get the ball. The reason why Souness got shut was because Dunn was overweight and a bit of a playboy by all accounts. This might also be a contributing factor as to why he´s very injury prawn. But Sparky obviously thinks there´s still something there to be worked on. He is also no chump in so far as he isn´t gonna give away 2mil of Rovers cash without knowing what he´s gonna get. I personally believe Dunn will return, but I don´t think we will pay 2mil in less it is tied in with appearances.
