The Hawks remained on course for the play-offs, but were pushed all the way by a resolute Bradford team.
A slow start by the home team saw them fall two goals behind, with defensive lapses exposing debutant goalkeeper Ian Thirkettle, and although the Hawks continued to press throughout the first period, the opposition netminder was in inspired form.
The second period started much more positively, as the Hawks strived to haul themselves back into the game.

A breakaway down the right saw the puck pulled back to Antony Kinder, who, from two yards out, finally beat the Bulldogs keeper.
Then the equaliser duly arrived from the stick of the Aaron Special' Davies.
A few minutes later, Davies was back in the action, this time sending a slapshot beyond the stricken netminder.
The Hawks forwards seized the initiative, and a sublime finish from Hulme, from the most acute of angles, put the home team two goals in front.
However, a costly bout of ill-discipline gifted the Bulldogs a powerplay goal, setting up an intriguing third period finale.
Both teams came out full of intent after the break, aware that the next goal would be crucial.
Thirkettle, having shown obvious nerves early on, was now settling into his role between the pipes, constantly blanking the best efforts of the Bradford players.
His increasing confidence seemed to flow through the rest of his team-mates, and some good interplay in the opposition zone found Davies, who took great delight in securing his hat-trick.
Two more quick goals, one a trademark slapshot from star import Dusan Kubik, the other a solo effort from captain Michael Brunton, put the result beyond Bradford, who managed a late consolation.
