    LLiona takes Blackburn honour

Liona Riding has won Blackburn Road Runn-ers' Club Championship for the first time in her career, and received her trophy at the club's recent awards night held at Cherry Tree Cricket Club.

The women's Fastest Runner' Championship was the most closely contested with six in contention before a late season 3:51:59 marathon in Amsterdam sealed the victory. Perennial winner Sandra Snape had to settle for second with Sarah Clarke third.

In the age-related Best Runner' Championship, Norma Smith was also helped to the title by a marathon. Her time of 3:55:28 in the 2007 Flora London Marathon, was possibly the highlight of her career so far as it gave her third place in the over 60 women's age group in a race of 36,000 runners. Two over 50 veterans, Eileen Newman and Madeline Haworth, were second and third.

Both men's title's were won by the classy Mick Nester, who is still knocking out sub-three hour marathons and sub one hour ten-milers well into his fifties.

Over 65 veteran John Mitchell was second in the age related champ-ionship, while Mick Chimecjzuk was the third fastest. Shafiq Khan was the club's Runner of the Year after completing three rapid marathons, while the Most Improved Runner honour was won by Ronnie Smith.

The club was also celebrating double succ-ess in the Blackburn and District Sports Council Awards, with Lynn Hindle winning the Senior Award and Norma Smith taking the Merit Award.
