    Wilkinson just misses record
ROCKY ROAD: Todmorden's Sean Willis negotiates a hill
ROCKY ROAD: Todmorden's Sean Willis negotiates a hill

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers attracted 200 athletes to their second race of the season on Pendle Hill, and there were also 75 juniors from six to sixteen taking part in their own series of events.

The Pendle Fell Race from Barley Village is only 4.5 miles long, but with 1500 feet of climb rates as an A' category event.

In the main, it was the women who produced the eye catching performances with the in form Victoria Wilkinson mixing it with the best men before finishing fifth overall in 34:38, missing Carol Greenwood's 15-year old race record by a mere 13 seconds.

The Bingley Harrier from Skipton has just returned from Edinburgh where she was second for England in the cross country Home International.

Chorley Harriers' Lynne Clough was a somewhat distant second in 42:51 with Heather Dawes from Ilkley third.

Clayton's Sue Burns has just been elevated into the over 50 ranks yet was still fourth and first veteran in 45:29.

Fifteen seconds behind the Clayton Harrier, came the winning over 40, Linda Clarkson of Darwen Dashers.

The men's race was also won by a Bingley Harrier and unusually there wasn't even a Clayton man in the first 15.

Andy Peace was first past the post in 32:41, just five seconds clear of Joe Mercer from Skipton while Todmorden pair Sean Willis and Jon Wright were the first locals in seventh and eighth.

Willis missed the over 40 title by three seconds, but there was better fortune for Darwen based Graham Schofield who was first over 50 and 13th outright in 37:24. Barry Mitchell won the over 60 class for the hosts.

l Ashley Kay has won the U17 Men's title in the Kendal Winter League. The league was a series of 11 fell races held on successive Sundays from January to March with each runner's seven best results to count.

Ashley was a race winner five times to win the series by four points.

Five of his Rossendale Harrier team mates featured in the top dozen with Daniel Walsh and Elliot Wylie the pick with third and fourth in the U14 boys list.

Chloe Law was 10th U12 girl while Joe Johnson and Luke Gregory were 10th and 12th of the U17 men.

Wendy Dodds was second senior woman and Jack Holt and Ian Robinson took second and fourth in the men's over 50s class.

    All three represent Clayton Harriers.
