Talent on show as Pendle kicks off summer season

Pendle Athletic Club signalled the start of the summer season with the first Track and Field Meeting in East Lancashire on Sunday.

Local athletes turned out in numbers to hone their skills for the serious challenges ahead when the league season gets underway in another fortnight.

Representation from further afield was patchy, with the early Easter being responsible for a clash of dates with a meet at Wigan, but there was competition from the east with Leeds club Skyrac prominent.

For some of the youngest competitors, it would have been their first taste of proper competition, and there were four events for the U10s and U11s to sample including the 75m, 150m, 600m and long jump.

Talent spotters should note the names of Connor Barrow, of Burnley, who won the U11 boys' 75m and 150m, and the host club's Oliver Spencer, the victor in the U10 boys' 75m and 600m.

Alice Parkinson of Pendle won the U11 girls' 600m and there were second places for Hyndburn Athletic Club's Rebecca Dewhurst, Jack Mulligan, William Moynihan and Lucinda Mulligan.

Samuel Charnley from Blackburn Harriers and Hazel Pomfret of the Pendle club each scored with two second places.

Performance of the day was the Grade 2 Standard 27.1 seconds in the 200 metres for U15 Rachel McMorran from Bolton United Harriers.

As the race included a mix of age groups, McMorran was actually beaten by Pendle's Katy Lord who clocked 26.6 seconds. It was a Grade 4 performance from the U20, but her best of the day was a G3 as she won the senior women's 100m in 13.0 seconds.

Blackburn's Abby-Leigh Edmundson won the women's 300m hurdles in 47.7 seconds, a G3 for an U17, and there were two G3 performances from Pendle U15 thrower Lucy Chadwick. Chadwick threw the discus 20.82 metres and putted the shot 8.19 metres.
