Chew ends campaign in style
12:00pm Thursday 16th August 2012 in Athletics By Gary York
CHAMPION Stephen Chew sealed his Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix 2012 title by winning the final race of the calendar in the shape of Sunday’s Boulsworth Fell Race.
There was another excellent turnout of fell runners for this year’s event which is now an established part of the annual Trawden Agricultural Show. A total of 125 runners took part which included a good number from local club Trawden as well as runners from further afield. A week of reasonable weather meant that the eight-mile route up Boulsworth Fell was a lot drier than may have been anticipated but that didn’t stop runners finishing covered in mud.
Chew of Wharfedale Harriers took victory in 53 minutes and 16 seconds, with Pudsey duo James Titmuss and Darren Burnley second and third respectively.
Clayton’s Garry Wilkinson and David Naughton – coming home six and seventh – were our best local finishers, while Glen Goodwin of Accrington Road Runners was in 10th position and Rossendale’s Thornton Taylor 11th.
First female was Helen Fines of Calder Valley, followed by Amy Green of Keighley and Craven and third was Sarah Sarginson of Bowland Fell Runners. Beckie Taylor of Blackburn Harriers won the under 20 age category.
