Athletics what's on guide - December 22

* The Rudolf’s Red Nose Five-Mile Race takes place in Blackpool on Christmas Eve at 11am. The race is organised by Lancashire Fire Athletics Club and Wesham Road Runners, with headquarters at Blackpool Fire Station in North Park Drive. Entries for the event close tomorrow, however, with more information available at ukresults.net.

* Rossendale Harriers host the Whinberry Naze Dash on Boxing Day from Marl Pits Sports Centre. The four-mile race, with 750 feet of climb, starts at 11.30pm with a £3 entry fee. For more details contact Steve Duxbury on 01706 224377 or email steve.duxbury @hopwood.ac.uk.

* Leyland’s Worden Park will be the venue for the Boxing Day 10k. The race starts at the earlier time of 10am and headquarters will be in the main car park off Worden Lane opposite Vicarsfield Road. Athletes are advised to arrive ready to run as there are no facilities available at the venue.

* The Hot Toddy Road Race takes place on Tuesday from Todmorden WM Social Club in Halifax Road. The event, which starts at 11am, is always very popular and a one-mile off-road fun run will also take place at 10.30am. Entry forms are available at www.todharriers.co.uk.

* The Joe Salt New Year’s Day Awakener Race takes place on the first day of 2012 from Red Lion Inn in The Square, Whitworth. The race will start at 11.15am and takes place on a 4.2-mile multi-terrain course including paths, trails and the Cowm Reservoir area. * The Lancashire Athletic Association’s Cross Country Championships will be held at Blackburn’s Witton Park on Saturday, January 7. Athletes must be aged eight or over with junior races starting at 11am. The final event of the day, the over 40s race, is at 2pm. Entries are expected to be available up until race day, costing £4 for under 17s and £6 for others. Entry forms are available at www.race-results.co.uk * The Ribble Valley 10k, which includes the Northern Athletics Road Running Championship, will take place in Clitheroe on Tuesday.

Registration closes at 10.15am on the day, and the race will start at 10.30am prompt from Roefield Leisure Centre, Edisford Bridge, Clitheroe.

The race will be traffic free and all roads will be closed at 9.45am, 45 minutes before the race.

Access to car parking can only be gained coming from the direction of Clitheroe town centre.

Marshals will direct all cars approaching the race registration area to the relevant car parking areas.

Participants should aim to get to the race and collect their number at Roefield Leisure Centre by 9.50am at the latest.
