While the track athletes were competing in the National Indoor Championships, those who favour the outdoor life also had an English Championship in their diaries with Saturday’s English National Cross Country Championships at Roundhay Park in Leeds.
With a grand total of around 3,700 athletes taking part in the 10 races, every race was keenly contested and the former Pendle athlete Ben Lindsay was the only local to make the top 20 with ninth in the senior race.
Another high quality run in the Inter Counties on March 13 could seal a place in the Great Britain World Championship team for Poland.
The younger runners will be aiming for the English Schools’ Championships as well as the Inter Counties and the U13s especially caught the eye with Blackburn’s Elizabeth Greenwood and Sally Searson 22nd and 34th for the girls and Darius Boardman and Matthew Dutton taking 22nd and 51st for Pendle in the boys’ race.
Two more Blackburn Harriers shone in the girls’ U17 race with Beckie Taylor 31st and Charlotte Atkinson 50th but there was less to cheer in the U15s where Rossendale’s Megan Davies was the exception with 51st in the girls’ race.
