Betts is winner after appeal

The final South East Lancashire Cross Country League fixture of the season at Lilford Park in Leigh turned out to be controversial affair.

Luke Betts of Chorley Athletic Club won the U17 men’s race by a large margin, but missed a small element of the course due to a marshalling error and was disqualified.

His appeal to the league committee was upheld and Betts – who had already won the two previous races – has been declared the champion.

It has been a good season for Chorley AC with Fergus Tallon winning the U13 title, adding a second place finish at Leigh to his two previous victories.

Adam Sciacca missed the chance for a club triple by skipping the last round in favour of a school trip, but still finished equal second in the U15s where Ben Ramsey took fifth.

While most local students were fighting it out in the Lancashire Schools Cross Country Championships at Blackburn three weeks ago, several Rossendale Harriers were involved in the Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Championships which were held at Leigh.

Megan Davies won the Junior Girl’s Race while Joe Johnston was fourth of the senior boys.

Both were eligible as they are pupils in Bury and they have earned places in the Greater Manchester Schools’ Team at the English Schools’ Championship which will be hosted in their area at Heaton Park on Saturday March 20.

The Lancashire Schools’ Team has also been announced.
