Accrington Stanley match in betting probe

The Football Association "will look very closely" at Accrington's 2-0 defeat by Bury yesterday after some bookmakers stopped taking bets on the match having seen "an unusual amount of money" being placed.

Both William Hill and Coral closed their book on the League Two game while betting exchange Betfair reported action far exceeding fixtures of a similar profile.

Graham Sharpe of William Hill told the Sunday Mirror: "We were seeing substantial money for just one result, Bury to win. We shortened the price four times and we were still seeing people wanting to bet.

"That was the point at which we decided to close the book. I can't ever recall us taking this action on an English league game."

David Stevens of Coral said the firm stopped taking bets after taking "an unusual amount of money for a game of that magnitude".

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington said: "This was a very unusual betting pattern - if the allegations are true. We were made aware of the situation on Friday.

"We will look very closely at the information Betfair and other bookmakers provide and take any subsequent action with the football league and the two clubs concerned."

Stanley chief executive Rob Heys vowed the club will "investigate it fully".

"The club was aware that betting was suspended on Friday on the Accrington v Bury game," he said.

"At this moment in time we have no evidence to suggest any wrongdoing.

"We are going to investigate it fully and any wrongdoing will be severely dealt with.

"Nobody has confirmed to the club anything that has happened but we would welcome any further information."

Stanley manager John Coleman said: "There's no proof, we could see out there that we wanted to win the game."

Football League spokesman John Nagle said: "An issue has been raised with us regarding a match through existing monitoring arrangements."

The Football Association would have had to look into it if there was a lot of betting for Stanley to win!

On 5 Live yesterday Lord Mawhiney sid it would be usual for between £5000 to £10,000 to be staked ona provincial lower division game such as this.
By Friday lunchtime more than £300,000 had been bet.

Can't believe this has anything to do with anyone at the club but we could really do without this as we do not need to be in the news for the wrong reasons again
