Charlie Mulgrew says a defeat for Scotland in their friendly with Costa Rica won't overshadow his pride at leading out his country.

The Rovers defender captained the Tartan Army for the first time as he won cap number 33 in the game at Hampden Park on Friday night.

Marco Urena’s 15th minute goal separated the sides, with Ewood skipper Mulgrew replaced by John McGinn eight minutes from time as Alex McLeish’s second spell in charge of his country began with defeat.

Rovers skipper Mulgrew however, felt there were positives to take from a night he says he will never forget.

He said: “It was a very proud moment for me. My family were there, my sons and my wife were watching me, so I’m delighted with that.

“It’s something I’ll probably look back on in years to come. I’ve got everything from the game in my bag, even bits of dirt and all sorts.

“My top is in there and I might get the boys to sign it later.

“I don’t know what I’ll do with it. My mum sent me a text before the game and she will probably be trying to grab it, but we’ll see what happens.

“We can take a lot from the game, especially the second half when we upped the tempo. Costa Rica are a good side with good individual players.

“We maybe showed them a bit too much respect in the first half. But it’s still early days for this squad, and we were happier with the second half.

“We just failed to take our chances in good areas.

“Andy Robertson was excellent again. He’s a top player, I knew it from the first time I ever saw him in training.

“He’s playing at the highest level and we’re delighted to have him.

“There’s a lot we can take from the game, a lot of positives. There were a lot of good performances and a lot to look forward to.”

Scotland are in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Budapest to play Hungary.

That comes 48 hours before Rovers host Bradford City, though the 32-year-old says playing twice in three days isn't of concern to him.

He added: “I’ll be doing everything I can for Scotland. When Tuesday’s finished and we get back here, then I can deal with Thursday night.

“It’s still a long time – 36 hours before the next game. At centre-back, you don’t maybe do as much running as you would somewhere else.

“We’ll see what happens. My full focus is on Scotland at the moment.”
