DAVID Nugent’s future at Leicester City is in the balance – with Burnley linked with a move to bring the striker back to Turf Moor.

Nugent helped Leicester to the Championship title with 22 goals during the 2013/14 season, but the forward’s contract expires at the end of the month.

The Foxes have offered Nugent a new deal but he is yet to agree terms and initial confidence that the 29-year-old would re-sign is starting to wane in the East Midlands.

Nugent had a loan spell with Burnley during their last Premier League campaign and the Clarets are among the clubs being linked with an interest if he does leave Leicester this summer.

It is understood that a number of clubs are interested, with Middlesbrough, Hull City, West Ham United and Swansea City among those reported to be tracking him.

Burnley could add a striker to their ranks this summer to provide competition for Danny Ings, Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes – particularly as the latter will miss the start of the season after damaging his cruciate ligaments.

Nugent is currently understood to be on holiday, with no decision on his future imminent, but time is ticking down to the start of pre-season.

The striker joined Leicester from Portsmouth in 2011 and has enjoyed success at the King Power Stadium – also maintaining his habit of scoring whenever he faces Burnley.

He became a father for the first time towards the end of 2013 and said then that wanted to agree a new contract with Leicester.

But reports suggest the Foxes have offered him only a one-year deal, while other clubs would be prepare to offer him two years. Sources in the East Midlands suggest that a deal to remain at Leicester, expected to be a formality this summer, is now firmly in the balance.

Nugent netted six times in 30 appearances during his one season with the Clarets in the top flight in 2009/10.

Burnley have also been linked with Algeria centre back Madjid Bougherra, who has issued a come and get me plea to Premier League clubs following his release by Qatar side Lekhwiya.

The 31-year-old appeared for his country in their World Cup game against Belgium yesterday and has previously represented Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Crewe and Rangers.
