Promotion not certain, says cautious Clarets chief Dyche

Lancashire Telegraph: Sean Dyche Sean Dyche

MANAGER Sean Dyche has told his Burnley players not to take promotion for granted as they enter the final countdown.

The Clarets have just 10 games left of a campaign which has rarely seen them outside the top two in the Championship table.

A 2-1 win over Leeds opened up a 10-point lead over third placed Derby on Saturday.

But ahead of this weekend’s game at relegation-threatened Charlton, Dyche warned against the gap lulling the players, or supporters, into a false sense of security with 30 points still left to play for.

“The next one’s Charlton, that’s all I focus on. We can’t focus beyond that. It’s one game at a time,” said Dyche, who insists his outlook has been the same from day one.

“It’s been clear since Cork (during pre-season training), the toil, the hard work, it can only be done one step at a time in any big achievement, and I’m really pleased with the clarity of thinking that the players have shown. But it is only so far.

“People think I’m playing it down but I’m not, it’s so far. We’ve got another challenging game again at the weekend.

“This division’s relentless and we have to be relentless in our thoughts to go and deliver performances.”

With just a week remaining of the emergency loan market Dyche’s attentions have also turned to reinforcements for the run-in.

Injury to Danny Ings has prompted the board to give the Clarets boss the green light to strengthen his strike force.

The smallest squad in the Championship, Burnley have used the least amount of players in the division this season, with Kieran Tripper, Sam Vokes and captain Jason Shackell all ever-presents in league and cup. Indeed, Trippier and Shackell have played every minute of every game.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton and midfielder David Jones are Championship ever-presents.

Seven wins will see us promoted even if QPR, Derby and Wigan win all their remaining games. it won't take anywhere near that many though, i think five at most will see us in an unassailable position.

Charlton first up then Doncaster then Leicester.

Come on you Clarets, nine points.

Fantastic so far, but lets remain fully focused, there's still a lot of work to be done.

Believe me mate, there is nobody more surprised than us.

When we lost Austin three days before the season started I honestly thought a relegation battle was looming as we didn't have enough goals in the side! Shows what I know.

The table never lies. People think that because you lot have a small squad its a detrimental thing but its quite the opposite. It seems to create a small tight knit squad, who work tirelessly for each other and the manager. 10 games to go, providing you don't get any further injuries to the big names like Trippier, Marney etc then you'll be fine. Well done

Do I sense the old reverse psychology going on with the already promoted comments from our friends down the road?
Long way to go. always said that when it reaches a point a game difference then it is ours to lose. Would take a point at charlton and 3 at home to Donny if offered now. Take all 6 and we may have just about sealed it.
4 wins leaves the others needing 22 points (Effectively 23 thanks to GD) out of final 30 and that takes some doing.

Obviously everyone who supports the Clarets must have that "buzz factor" about chance of promotion but have to agree with Mr. Dyche (respect) and his philosophy "one game at a time". Teams are bound to come at the Clarets to make it hard, as was proved on Saturday, it is against the teams which want to play football we seem to fare better against rather than the spoilers so there may be one or two 'banana skins'.

However, have never experienced a manager with a more balanced outlook, politeness and straight talking without any of the waffle drivelled out by others.

"Hats off to Mr. Dyche a very subtle and thoughtful manager

McClaret, you'll probably find Ewoodmark is normally genuine and sincere in his posts. None of the silliness and I doubt he could be bothered with reverse psychology.
As for Charlton, they've made themselves difficult to beat since they changed management. There last 3 games are 2 x nil nil and a one nil win. Its going to be small margins which may decide this one. I'm expecting us to come off the pitch with the same point we start the game with. We are good enough for all 3 but there are no easy games in this league and all that.

My worry is derby. They av an easy run in after Saturday. I just hope marney stays fit n he doesn't get any more bookings. He is only 1 away from a 2 game ban apparently. We miss him big style when he isn't playing.
