BLACKBURN Rovers have announced the signing of Luke Varney on loan from Championship rivals Leeds United – with the striker joining in time to be available for today’s match at Middlesbrough.

Rovers have the option to make the move permanent once Varney’s loan spell runs out on May 11.

The 31-year-old, who counts Crewe Alexandra, Charlton Athletic, Blackpool and Portsmouth among his former clubs, was a target for Gary Bowyer before the January transfer window closed.

A deal, however, was blocked by new Leeds owner Massimo Cellino.

But Rovers boss Bowyer has got his man after the window for loan signings reopened this morning.

Bowyer said: "He is a great addition to the squad and a great lad. He has been very keen to join us.

"He works really hard, he is a great team player and gives us further options in our attacking areas.

"He is an aggressive forward who will give defenders a real handful."

Welcome Luke, let's hope you have joined a team going places. At least it puts pressure on the other forwards.

Get into em!

I agree that he is not the worlds greatest player, but then again theres only one player that is lol. I do think he could be a good addition though, hes got experience, he pops up with a few goals and has was stated in a earlier post he can put a bit of pressure on present strikers....worth a try, if not he goes back to Leeds.

Whatever some may think about Varney this is the type of player that we have been missing. I thought Best might have filled thisrole but it wasn't to be. If Varney can come on and unsettle a few defenders and make things happen for others it'll do for me.

George Oghani's Ironing Board says...

Reminds me of Dickov slightly not prolific but a real pain in the arse at times, I remember he was up and down against us this season and putting it about. Loan signing as well so nothing lost if it doesn't work out, although I think it's just what we need. Getting rid of Best would have capped off a good window, onwards and upwards RTID

After the experience of paying over the odds for players and paying high wages over the last few years, there is no way we will be paying high wages now. If a player comes to the Rovers now it is to play football.

We clearly need some firepower as Rhodes is going through a bad patch but I'm not convinced that Varney is the answer.

What have we come to experience at Ewood Dave? Just out of interest of what you mean by that comment....? Don't take one look at Wikipedia or google and tell me one fact from the top of your head about Luke Varney... If you can...
