Burnley hoping to secure more player deals

Lancashire Telegraph: Sam Vokes has signed a new contract at Turf Moor Sam Vokes has signed a new contract at Turf Moor

SAM Vokes has signed a two-year contract extension with Burnley, and there could be more Clarets committing their long-term futures to the club this season.

After hitting his 11th goal of the campaign in the FA Cup defeat to Southampton, Wales international Vokes agreed a new deal until the summer of 2017.

Manager Sean Dyche said the contract was reward for consistently good performances by the striker, who signed an initial three-year deal under Eddie Howe in the summer of 2012 but had to wait until this season for a regular place in the side.

“Sam is enjoying his football and developing as a player,” said Dyche.

“We have all seen, so far, great signs of how his all-round game is improving and we are delighted he has decided to stay with us.

“I spoke to Sam in the summer and told him we wanted him to be part of what we are looking to do here at Burnley and he has responded to that challenge. He is putting in consistent performances and scoring goals and becoming the player we think he can be, so we are delighted that he is going to continue that process with us as we move the club forward.”

Now, after forming a formidable partnership with Danny Ings – with the pair firing the Clarets into the automatic promotion places with 72 per cent of the team’s goals this term – fans will hope the 20-goal top scorer can follow suit and put an end to transfer speculation.

“That’s one down,” said chief executive Lee Hoos, who is in talks with a number of current Clarets whose deals are set to expire in the next 18 months.

Ings falls into that bracket, but Hoos was reluctant to comment on individual cases.

“Danny is a good lad and he is enjoying his football. What we don’t want to do is distract him,” added Hoos. “We need to make sure he is concentrating on what’s going on right now.”

But Hoos is expecting a busy month behind the scenes as the club seeks to add to the squad during the January transfer window, and tie further existing players to new deals.

“We are working on other things. We are always trying to make sure we are looking ahead to the future. It’s always an ongoing process, but it always takes two people to dance.

“But the mood in the camp - how all the players get along with each other – it’s the best I’ve ever seen.

“The guys are working hard for each other and we want that to continue,” said Hoos, who of the prospect of new arrivals added: “We’re beavering away on that.

“We’re trying to get one done but it would be great if we could get two.

“But we’ve got to get the right ones in, someone who is prepared to work hard and earn their place in the team.”
