Leeds win will boost us for cup clash, says Blackburn Rovers defender Hanley

BLACKBURN Rovers will go into tomorrow’s eagerly anticipated FA Cup encounter with Manchester City with confidence high on the back of one of their biggest results of the campaign.

That was the verdict of centre-back Grant Hanley after he helped Rovers record a 2-1 league win at Leeds on New Year’s Day.

While Hanley and his team-mates will be out to claim the scalp of last season’s losing finalists City in front of the live BT Sport cameras tomorrow, their main focus remains the same – to finish in the top six of the Championship.

And they now find themselves just two points outside of the play-off places after they beat Leeds to bounce back from their battling home loss to Birmingham City and make it back-to-back away victories for the first time this season.

Hanley said: “It was one of our best performances away from home.

“It could have even been more in the first half – the quality of our play, the chances that we had and we could even have had a penalty.

“We dug-in in the second half and were glad to come away with the three points.

“The Birmingham game was a one-off. We dominated the game but we lost three poor goals and that killed us.

“But we took the positives from that and it was a great reaction from the lads at Leeds.

“It was one of the biggest results of the season coming away to Leeds and getting the three points.”

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer gave his players the day off yesterday to recover before returning to Brockhall today to prepare for the big Ewood Park FA Cup clash with Premier League favourites City.

And Hanley, after playing a key role in preventing Leeds from making a second-half comeback, was glad of the rest.

He said: “We have to try and recover from the Leeds game first – and it’ll take some doing!

“The big games are coming thick and fast, we’ve just got to recover now and look forward to it.”

What a great job you've done of closing the gap. You've just wasted yet another 4 games with an embarrassing home no-show against relegation fodder Sheff Wed, and having your ar5es handed to you at home by Birmingham. What a shambles.

Perhaps now is the time to accept your position as our inferior neighbours and wind those filthy Shadsworth necks in?

After a decent Christmas period Burnley now have a nice run of games coming up against Yeovil and Sheff Wed, allowing us to keep the pressure on Leicester who have to play Derby and Leeds away.

Meanwhile poor old mid-table Rovers will delight football fans worldwide by acting as the cones in a Man City exhibition training session before yet another soul destroying home defeat this time from the mighty Doncaster, followed by a spanking at promotion chasing Nottingham Forest.

The gap could well be 19 towards the end of Jan...

Keep dreaming Clampett's, that drop you've promised us since October 1st, just isn't happening. Chin up.

A good chance to give some of the squad members a chance to show what they can do. I would like to see Kane have a run and see how Kilgallon can fare alongside Hanley just in case Dann does go to Palace. If Dunny is fit he will relish the challenge and let's see if Best fancies putting himself in the shop window. Let's face it, none of the top Prem teams would fancy themselves in this fixture so let's use this as an opportunity to show who is up for a shot at glory. No point in trying to shut up shop, or risking derailing the promotion push. Play for pride and the thrill of the cup.

Early kick off tomorrow so I wonder if Knackersley and Dingerlous David have managed to get their carers to come in early and tap out their inane comments for them as well as spooning them lunch?

If it's too early they will be busy spooning each other.

Hoping for a good result, but will be happy with simply a good showing - either way I'm absolutely stoked.... as an Aussie supporter I haven't been able to watch Rovers live for a couple year now, but with ESPN broadcasting this one I can't wait to pull up a chair at my local and watch Rovers on the telly (and hopefully cheer a few times) :-D

Thanks for the pointer Frenchie (actually Daily Telegraph !) and a good read, exactly the approach we were looking for after the Kean debacle, and probably what a more experienced manager would have tried to do. No doubt the misery crew will try to make something negative out of the fact he speaks positively about his relationships with the players and the owners but what else would you expect.
